Our DL is young...2 juniors and 2 sophomores will probably start next year.

People want to play.

I dont see Nebraska getting into the top 15 recruiting classes until they start winning the big games and start being a regular in the CCG and Playoff pucture (not necessarily in the playoff but at least in thecinversation). That wont happen without proper coaching up of lessor talented guys. Im not saying this staff cant do thatn but to get elite talent you have to be up with tue big dogs in rankings at the end of the season, not just in the middle of the season for a few weeks.

I don't buy that. Sorry. Riley and his staff are built to be a recruiting machine. However, if your expecting them to routinely win big games and be in the CCG and playoff picture, with underrated players... Maybe every once in awhile, but not enough. In fact, what I think of when it comes to that... Wisconsin, Michigan St., Iowa. Good enough, but not great. I demand great. I've watched to many years of Solich, Callahan, Pelini. We can be so much better than that. It starts with recruiting with the big boys. If they don't, I fear Riley will be joining the above coaches.

Certainly fair to wonder at this point where the DEs are going to come from. I understand that philosophically they're open to moving guys from LB to DE but I don't know where I see a 2-4 of those guys on the roster or in this class.

They'd better be ready to go on multiple other kids after how this week has shaken out.

I know it sucks but I am against taking kids just to fill a class. That is how you end up with 5th year seniors who have never played a down. I would rather reward a walk on with a scholarship for a year and increase the number of scholarships from 12 to 16 next year.

Quality over quantity.

again .. I just can't believe that Nebraska and Parella don't have this covered

Def LIne recruiting (particularly DE) has been priority 1-2-3 for 12 + months
if we are severely scrambling then I need to seriously question the Parella hire - Nebraska isn't a tech school where you go for some good quality on the job training

this isn't northern michigan where you are recruiting against the likes of michigan tech or ferris state

there is no way that we can be scrambling down the stretch at our greatest area of need ... we have to have a few big fish hooked

Well, that kinda sucks. This is a big loss, no matter how you try to make it sound.

The goalpost for me will not be moved back. Top 15 classes are a requirement if we ever want to get back to winning championships.
Nope, top 10. We need top 10 classes.

At least it appears that he is willing to put forth the work as compared to some on the staff. ;)
Appears is about it. Aren't you a results-only guy? Why now are you pointing fingers and making excuses?

Does his family have a connection to Charlie Strong?
I would bet money that Porcher ends up playing for Charlie. That was my first thought when I heard today that he had opted out. My second thought was that the melt down on the Husker board might be entertaining tonight.

Needs to stay close to family. I get it. If he goes pro, will he only play for a Florida team? Glad that he told us early. Still have time for recruits. Thomas, we need you , man.

Thanks for the hot tip.

I didn't say Michigan was recruiting him. I was replying to the poster who brought up Michigan. Porcher said he wanted to stay close to home so, the above was my response.

Wow..
I am guessing it has to do with all the new coaches at the schools near him. Weak move, but to each their own.

Moving further from family isn't as big of a deal for a 23 year old as it is for an 18 to 19 year old. It would have been nice IF he had told us a few weeks ago, but I suspect that our staff knew about this before today.

What's your definition of hooked? Parella has talked to no shortage of guys and even visited Beal not even 2 weeks ago.

But there aren't a couple of four stars lined up to back fill this guy. Schaefer pretty much confirmed on 1620 tonight that Parella will go back to the film and try and find a few solid guys that will work, but its pretty well a shot in the dark if you find a game changing talent in January.

NU is also not a school where 2-3 other 4* DE's are going to hang around hoping your committed guys flake out either. They are going to have options where they were the #1 target and not just a backup plan.

if we are in indeed high and dry at our most critical area of need then I would submit this as exhibit A as to why you don't hire assistants with little if any coaching experience from a lower level division 2 school like Northern Michigan

again just can't believe this is the case .... this lack of results is part of the reason Hughes got canned

I have to agree with this. Reluctantly. I was enthusiastic about the Parella hire. And who knows, maybe we have some bigger fish lined up. But I doubt it. Has the Nebraska brand fallen so far that even the very real prospect of immediate playing time isn't enough to get defensive end prospects here? This should have been an easy sell. Come to one of the most storied programs of all time, with amazing facilities, with rabid fans, in a pretty cool college city, with a very real chance of playing as a freshman... and we can't get a SINGLE recruit to come here to play DE??? Something stinks here

"Parrella has his work cut out for him, but the pool he is working currently could allow him to finish with a very nice class still."

That's a take from another board on a guy who usually has good insight. And strangely enough, has connections to the USC coaching staff, so he probably has more background info on Lynch.

Pernell's take as well below.

"Keeping Guy Thomas (who is a better looking recruit by far IMPO) is HUGE now. Nebraska can't miss at DE for this class. I would assume the staff looks at some kids who might be committed to non-power 5 schools to see who they can poach. Sort of like they did with Alex Davis. Porcher probably wasn't a guy who was going to play as a true freshman anyways. It's important that Nebraska still bring one or two guys in who they can plug into the S&C program and start to develop with an eye towards 2018."

This late in the game, you are looking at developmental type players, not start Day 1 players. Which we didn't have in the bag as Plan A guys anyway. Unless Beal flips, you are not going to see "bigger fish" be like "oh ok there's a spot now!". We didn't let Porcher walk away cause we have Clowney as a silent.

I guess I'm continually surprised at folks that thought Thomas and Porcher were going to play immediate snaps.

Thomas is crucially undersized for D1 DE, and Porcher I don't think is anymore highly touted than Daishon Neal.

If Porcher was play *alot* next year or even starting, we missed *big time* on both Neal and Davis, as well as Miller.

I agree ... but this is what can happen when your position coach's only recruiting experience is at a JUCO and lower level div 2 school ... we are once again throwing classes away at certain positions while inexperienced assistants take a year or two to get their feet wet ... but, hey, he played at Nebraska so it is all good

this isn't about next year ... rarely are freshman going to come in and contribute heavily .. this is about 2 or 3 years from now .. you can't throw recruiting cycles away at key positions - this is why our depth is crap right now

Who exactly has two four stars lined up, and two more on constant retainer? Unless you are Bama and OSU, "the norm" is what happens and why recruiting analysts are so familiar with this song and dance.

he didn't have two - 4 stars lined up - he thought he had 2 four stars lined up which is now incorrect. I like Parella and I know things happen, but a cup of coffee at a JUCO and 2 years at Northern Michigan prior recruiting experience doesn't get you the benefit of the doubt.

Luckily he played at Nebraska - a walk on no less - so the excuses will be plentiful
if this was Banker or Hughes or Read they would be getting tarred and feathered

I still think they have things covered .. otherwise we hired an assistant with zero experience recruiting at any division 1 level to recruit at out most critical area of need and it bit us in the ***

In your own words, you are looking for Big Fish on the line, which I took to mean, guys who are going to contribute early.

We didn't have that on the line. We probably certainly don't have too much option of getting that in January.

If you are fine with a 2-3 years from now developmental cycle....well then Parella probably has a few options he can play. The recruiting analysts are trying to temper down ideas from the message board fan base that two 4*'s walked out the door and two more could just as easily walk in. We're more than likely going to end up with a developmental guy.

That's why I said we'll find out real quick who in that other thread really wants to build lines like Iowa and Wisky do :)

That's an interesting way of looking at it. What happened to the rivals conspiracy theory where players rankings dropped after they signed with NU?

I'm guessing it was his play this year that brought his ranking up, not his verbal to NU.

I guess in my own personal opinion, not that happy with potentially both DE walking out the door. I feel better about Thomas than I did a couple of days ago but who knows what he ultimately does.

One area I think Parella might shine, is coming up with a backup option who can grow into good players. If we have to rely on development and identification of a guy who is not all world, I think Parella can be good at that more than most.

fair enough .. we will see 2 or 3 years down the road
but Wisky and Iowa usually have their guys by now and aren't back to the drawing board in mid December

Parella just has no recruiting resume to engender a great deal of confidence

I did not say I expected them to play right away. In fact, I think Porcher was a huge project that would take time. And yes, Thomas is undersized. But it makes my point stronger: even the guys we have/had on board aren't exactly blue chippers. I am not impressed so far with Parella's recruiting. This is a position of great need at a power 5, blue blood program with great facilities and fan support, and this is the best we can do? This whole situation is a train wreck right now. How are we going to compete in the B1G with a thin defensive line with marginal talent?

Well a year ago, we couldn't get a DL on campus and fired Hughes. This year, pretty much every DL we had on the line was a 4* caliber talent by one service or another.

What exactly is the standard? Having that kind of "average star power" across the line was a major plus until about 48 hours ago, and now we are claiming its crap?

If it was crap, your argument is bunk because you'd have no reason to be upset losing them. We'll simply find other projects. :)
