Poor 3 pt shooter…we have enough of them
Shot a very solid number hus freshman year at Temple, it pays to look beyond the 3 point %.

11-32 as a freshman

12-52 as a sophomore

All around numbers are B grade numbers.....(2 pt, rebounds, assists, steals etc)

FT % in mid 60s is eh, but all I know is RU and this staff figures out a path and ways to maximize the positive aspects of almost every player that played major minutes (15+ minutes or more).

If you can get Williams for 2 years, it seems like a low risk item IMO.

Would need a waiver for second transfer?

Like the assist numbers and has some size. If he plays good D then I'm interested

He prides himself on his D. He told Fonseca he is looking for a school that will simply provide him with an opportunity to play. “Play defense, get out and play. Nothing too much, just an opportunity and a good fit," he said.

When he announced his transfer to Iowa State...

If he could okay this year then it would be a good/great addition.
Nj dot com reported most waivers are not being granted.

I listened to a podcast about him and it sounds like he still might not be 100% healthy after missing all of last year with an achillies injury. Not a great shooter but has some size. Better than nothing I suppose.

Good enough to play 31+ mpg for a tourney team from the B-12. But why is he looking to transfer again?

And who has significantly improved their shooting under this staff? Very few kids. With increased defensive effort they are more likely to get worse.

Just to clarify:

He didn’t play last year, his first year at Iowa State due to an injury (Achilles I believe). His only collegiate basketball experience consists of 2 years at Temple.

With a redshirt last year, he has 3 years of eligibility remaining.

Illini folks are alluding that he and the school decided to “mutually” part as they are expecting another addition (Paul?) and need the schollie as they were full with him on board. His commitment was never officially announced by the Illini.

All that said, would be happy to add him for next season, and if he develops, having him for a second or third year could add valuable depth. Hopefully, regardless of where he goes, his injury has healed up and he’s back to his prior form.

He’s an excellent defender. Sorry Illinois couldn’t take him. However:

1. Illinois didn’t expect him to be ready this season. He says he will.

2. He needs an exemption to be eligible.

3. The Illinois AD forced the coaches to cut him loose since he could have a link to the Iowa State betting scandal. Hope he isn’t. He’s a good kid. But AD is strongly against gambling in college sports and didn’t want to take the chance.

Good luck to him.

He shot 26.7% from three in his two years as the starting PG at Temple against lesser competition. For next year as a contributor, OK. For three years, not so sure. Will he even be happy with coming off the bench two and three years from now, because as it stands now he's going to be recruited over. I guess the game is such now that you just look at one year at a time.

This is it. This is the #1 thing I think of when I watch Pike's teams play.
Super excited to see how he does it with some of the more talented players he's recruited.

Yup - and the low FT% seems connected to shooting potential too - not always, but frequently

Not sure what you're expecting when the team captain announces transfer intentions after the portal closes leaving limited options such as grad transfer or transfer waivers. I look at a kid like this as a player who will bring upgrades in the multiples as a replacement for Miller. Meaning he can likely come in and give a solid 10-15 mins running the point behind Fernandez and allow Simpson to play more at the 2.

Agree. I just hope he is eligible to play next year if he commits. I don't think it makes sense to take him unless that's the case.

And apparently in some cases it takes at least 2 seasons for a player to get back to his pre-injury ability after an achilles tear, assuming that he ruptured it, if he gets back to his elite level at all... Admittedly the study linked below was limited...

But along with the Austin Williams possible recruit, it would make 5 potential players on the '23-'24 roster who may have missed significant time last season or the entire season, including the end of the season, due to a major injury.... I realize that if we do bring in a Williams, it would most likely be one and not both. Hopefully we have a great medical staff and great trainers.. (smile) (And Peter Griffin never had to deal with an injured Achilles tendon)... (reference from the Austin Williams thread).

Shooting is the hardest thing to improve . . . many players never improve meaningfully.
I’m not saying it’s easy to improve shooting but it’s an untrue statement that it’s the hardest thing to improve. I think it’s much harder actually to improve ball handling and rebounding than wide open shooting ability like free throw shooting, for example.
