A total of 10,965 NCAA football players entered the portal across all levels, and while plenty have found new homes, the majority are still stuck in limbo.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • 3,972 players from FBS
  • 2,771 from FCS
  • 4,222 from Division II and III
Out of that total, 6,671 players are still active in the portal, which means they’ve either struck out so far or are still waiting for a better offer to come through. That includes:

  • 1,619 FBS players
  • 1,782 FCS players
  • 3,270 D2/D3 players
Put another way, 40% of FBS guys who hit the portal are still looking. For FCS, it’s 64%, and for D2 and D3? A wild 77% of players are still unsigned. That’s not just a traffic jam, it’s a full-on reality check for everyone thinking the portal is some automatic ticket to greener pastures.

Many of those players in the portal were forced there. Some call it getting processed. Or you can call it getting cut.

I'd love to see the numbers for previous years. What happens to the players who never find a home? Are they just finished with football? I guess they could go to a lower school/division as well.

and I'm old enough to remember a day when there was outrage over year to year scholarships that potentially left players without a path to being able to finish their education.

I think the P4 will find spots at the G5 and the G5 guys can find spots in Div II. No money but they can at least play and have a chance to move back up.

I suspect the portal is the end of a lot of football players' careers and many of them get a job at McDonalds or wherever.

Be interesting to see numbers on how many people move up or down a division, or up or down from G6 to P4, and also be interesting to know who was told to leave, who was just given honest feedback that they weren't likely to be a contributor, and who was leaving on their own.

They should do a study on this. Interview each transfer and ask if they were forced out or elected to transfer. Our coaches better be cutting the majority of our transfers but without real data we will never really know.

I still can't over Missouri taking two of our OL transfers. That's going to be damning for Lebby and Loadholt if they are productive for Missouri.
