I’m confused, when did these guys (including a committed player) become possible recruits?

If we get 2 5⭐s and a 4⭐ and whoever else comes with, the 24 class will be doing multi-laps around every other class Rutgers have ever had in modern recruiting history PERIOD. I'm sure someone will bring up the 70s but that's hard to track compared to modern recruiting.
Phil Sellers would have been at least a 4-star. Doubt that Dabney, Jordan, Copeland, Anderson, or Bailey would have been even a 3-star.

That one’s easy. Above lieutenant and below major.

Sellers was big time recruit.
From a 1975 SI article:

Sellers was a schoolboy All-America at Thomas Jefferson High and was selected MVP of Pittsburgh's prestigious Dapper Dan all-star game at the end of his senior season. After sifting through offers from 200 colleges, he signed a letter of intent to go to Notre Dame. But last-minute jitters about his ability to hack it there academically persuaded him to enroll at Livingston College, a part of Rutgers specially designed to help students from low-income backgrounds.

Go Phil forever (no, I'm not one of Phil's relatives!). GO RU!

I never knew Livingston was initially designed to help low income students. Totally off topic but how did it help low income folks, did it have a different pricing structure?

This is pretty ancient history, even for me! Hopefully, this is a live link to Livingston's roots in the late 60's:

I enrolled in Rutgers College in 1972. RC and the other New Brunswick/Piscataway campuses were probably no one's idea of inclusive or diverse. That was the first year there were even female students enrolled on that campus...of any ethnicity! While I'm not sure of tuition, Livingston was more open to minorities in general, I'm just not sure of the finances part...sorry. GO RU!

Nope. Bailey would have at least been a 4*. Sellers was a first team HS All American which made him a top five high school player as a senior. So that's a top 5*. The rest would have been at least 3*s. You are miles off base.

Copeland was very highly recruited by many of the top schools.
I actually saw Hollis play in high school....for Ewing vs. East Brunswick in a state tourney game. EB was led by Jon Walling.
Hollis was at the time a 6' 4" skinny center. I love him and that whole Rutgers team, but I doubt he was heavily recruited. He was great on Tom Young's team though.

I will say that this evening a am a little concerned by the fact the Duke gets the CBS prime time slot, while Northwestern and Iowa are relegated to TBS and TrueTV. Duke will be selling all the exposure it can provide to Dylan and Betsy. The Big 10 needs to push to get its teams better coverage during the Tournament.

Of course it would help if the Big 10 played better during the Tournament . . .

I could be wrong, but I remember Bailey as an under-recruited 6' 7" big man from Boston who was very raw and TY took a chance on.

$760 per semester for me at Rutgers College. You and wheezer must be ancient. LOL.
I guess I am
Difference was that, working jobs for $3 an hour or so, I could pay my way through
college without loans
Lived at home for a few years , then in a frat house, where the rent was doable there

I graduated in 1970. Livingston College began in my senior year. It was created to allow more students to be admitted from the inner cities. Originally, it was all pass/fail for grades.

Hollis was very highly thought of as an athlete who could touch the top of the backboard in HS IIRC

Duke will always be a top draw on CBS for basketball just like Notre Dame is on NBC for football.Duke will continue to attract elite recruits regardess which tv channel they are on.They have the best recruiting class for 2023 and 2024 will just follow the familiar pattern even if Harper chooses Rutgers.

IIRC (at least the story being told in the late 70’s/early 80’s) was that Livingston College had its roots in the ‘67 Newark riots. The state committed to addressing educational disparities. Not sure if true or only partially true, but that was the story we heard back then.

I played with Roy. Our senior year he was heavily recruited . We were one of the best teams in Jersey

story back then was Roy was only offered by Wagner and Rutgers (and perhaps lower level programs). Were there other bigger programs pushing for him?

PS - Roy was an absolute steal for us!

I certainly noted that Livingston felt more diverse than our other campuses but that alone would not address the lower income dilemma so I was curious if there was more to it than that.

My favorite James Bailey story, long...

He was invited as a speaker to our HS sports dinner. He told the crowd about his recruiting. He went on his first four recruiting trips and was so excited about getting picked up in limo's, going to the best seafood and steak restaurants etc.

His mother made him save a trip for RU because of its academic reputation, he really didn't want to come here. So he agreed and flew into EWR. Someone waved him down and they started walking to the limo, he thought. He got outside and was looking for the limo but the driver said throw your luggage in the back , it was a pinto. He said his knees were in his chest the whole ride.

The finally got to NB and he was looking for the hotel he was probably staying in, but nope, the car pulled up to one of the River dorms and the driver told him what room to go to. He got to the room and a bunch of players were happy to see him and they really bonded.
But he was starting to get hungry and was thinking of what size steak he was going to get. One of the hosts said he got money from Coach for dinner so let's head over to the Castle. He was like " wow, place named the castle" . You all know where this is going..... they ended up at White Castle.

He had the room rolling by now but he finished it off by saying his mother was correct , getting an education is key because not everyone is going to go pro.

I truthfully don't know how much of the story is true , but he sold it.

Quick but true story

There was an after game WRSU call in show during Hinsons high school senior year

A fan called in and said RU should be recruiting Hinson he was a good player etc

The caller had a young voice and sounded like a child

The host of the show asked
“Is he your brother”. Obviously never hearing about Hinson and kind of patronizing the caller

I remember this because Roy was playing well and should been known by the radio staff, who followed the high school scene
pretty closely back then
