Coaching wasn't the problem. I guess the politically correct term is "player buy in". That was the major underlying problem.

Actually not true, they gained 25 yards after one of the picks...take the Husker glasses off and realize that Nebraska NEVER had the ball after their first 2nd half possession with a chance to tie the game...you can sit here and talk about yards, time of possession, and all of that but what really matters is score. Nebraska had to air it out because they were down the whole 2nd half. Iowa could play conservative knowing they had the lead. 10 first downs doesn't matter when you get big scoring plays, and you have the lead the whole 2nd half. Rely on the defense at that point.
you know ... I'm coming around to your way of thinking ... before fully digesting your analysis I was going to commend Riley and staff and site being on the correct path if we go 9-4 or 10-3 with or without a West title and look forward to further gains in years to come
but your analysis makes so much sense that I and I encourage all Husker fans to follow RedRover's lead and start banking on a 12-1 season and a conference championship ... anything that falls significantly short (10-3 or if we don't make the CCG) then wholesale changes need to be made
I will count on Red's leadership and expertise for leading the mandate for change if we aren't hoisting the conference championship trophy and in serious consideration for the national title playoff
I can't believe my expectations were so low that I was going to bolster my support for the staff with a mere 10-3, or 9-4 season but alas it is 12-1 + conf championship or bust ...

We're still quite a bit of time from actually playing a game. In the big scheme of things, this years schedule is not that much different than last years. Oregon has some history, but for this year they're an unknown in terms of "elite" consideration. OhSU is the heavy hitter on the schedule (captain obvious). We're into year 2 in our new system. The coaches should know our team, our strengths and weaknesses. We should have a better year than last year. My big question mark is the defensive line, and not having the experience will make a difference in SOME games.
Mike Riley is our head coach. He is ultimately responsible and accountable for our performance, our wins and losses.
Being sincere, not facetious, not looking for a fight, but what are you considering irrational? Are people expecting 11 or 12 win seasons, right now (like they better be delivered or else). Or, is it "okay", "should be expected" to have a 5-win regular season (6-win overall). And we should expect another losing season, but only if we are rational?

Nebraska ran the ball 38 times to Iowa's 28 and Iowa picked up 153 yards to Nebraska's 137. That doesn't jive with playing catch-up even though Tommy was 25 of45. Oh by the way BeatHard went 9 of 16. Get a few problems fixed and we're well on our way.
...and Iowa picked up a first down on it's first play then went three and out. Last time checked that's a four play drive???

Well it was poor coaching - if you believe the reserve qb's could get the job done. If you reversed the way TA played, good from bad; it could have been a blow out for N. I wouldn't doubt he switched out of a lot of running plays on his own, adding to the disaster. He looked like he shouldn't be playing the position on any level. I get people are bickering; but you would have to tie me to a chair to get me to watch his film from that game again.
I'm gonna laugh my *** off if we win the B1G and make the Playoff. And of course dog stomp the Hawkeyes.

I'm just not going to sell this program short. There is enough people that do that already. We have a mountain to climb for sure but I believe in our players and coach.
So Vegas is laying odds on that third game. 9-3 or 10-2 isn't too bad of a season to be laying odds on.

And for all the lay people out there the Vegas odds pretty much validates my 11-1 regular season. They think we're gonna have at least 9 wins. They are betting on that 10th win. My odds would be at 10.5. I'm betting on that 11th win.

Where did you see that? I've seen 7.5 - so 9.5 is a HUGE leap coming from 5 (regular season) wins last year. Basically the same talent minus a couple NFL D linemen. It is very rare to expect a team to pick up 5 more wins than the previous season with mostly the same talent.

I don't bet exactly because of turncoats like Kevin Williams. I work hard for my money and I have a lot of it...(over $160,000 in the black) mainly because I don't squander it.
I would wager to bet that your not even close to that, one that brags like that means you are over compensating for faults in other places...
5 dimes...but it turns out that includes Big Ten Championship games and bowl game, so it is a bit different since most do not include that.
But more importantly is that Vegas has validated my post.
would you care to explain how Vegas predicting there is a 50% chance of Nebraska winning less than 10 games validates your 11-1 regular season prediction?
to be fair Vegas sets the line where they think they will get equal money on both sides of the line not necessarily the exact win total they think the team will achieve ... if historically bettors overvalue Nebraska the win total would be a bit inflated
I think you can say Vegas understands that the Bo hangover was a very real thing no matter how others try to down play it. We could have easily had 10 wins without it and Vegas backs that up.
Handicappers are more math/odds based than they are "how much do the guys like the coach" based.
Why don't you guys admit Nebraska is trending upwards and even the money men see it???
9-3 would be a good year in year two for Mike Riley, as long as we don't get beat by Iowa for one of our 3 losses.
Last year was a fluke on many levels. Easy for many of us too list a top ten reasons for last years poor record; and probably not touch on the new coaches. In a blind study; those on here at each others throats, would probably agree with at least 8 of the others reasons fairly often. Thats one reason we can fill a stadium with fans; and defend each other on the road.
Despite how much I like and respect some posters; how is ones willingness to bet, a test of his manhood? I have refused to bet, and then stepped up; to various results. People not coming up with the money; most often, " welching" on the bet when they lose . Then various amounts effect many of us differently; ND's old coach could bet ten grand and not miss it as much as many of us would a hundred.
Its very hard to save money in todays economy and speaks to good habits and goals when one manages to do so - and yes, even more so, when it's an effort that makes them proud. Many here are worth a lot; even oldsters with home equity built over the years - we also have valid opinions; most shared as part of a group effort; as a team enjoying the conversations of their team. Grateful for the insights of others; I know Trolls ________ : but lets try to know the difference.

I think in the three games I listed, poor game coaching was a big factor in the loss. In the BYU game we would have won were it not for our wretched clock management in the 4th. The Illinois game was played in horrific wet and windy weather. Our running game was working. But Riley and company decided to have Armstrong keep passing despite the fact that it was not working. Purdue? My goodness, your starting QB is out and so you decide to have his backup, who has never started or gotten significant playing time, chuck it all over the field.
The UCLA game shows that just because you throw the ball it doesn't mean you have to go deep. There are other options. But I will say I never fully understood why Ozigbo wasn't used more last year over Newby. The only reason that makes sense in a coaching sense is you can play pitch and catch and take players outta the loop. When you run the ball it's like a dance where everyone has to move correctly or you fall on your face.
With the elephants up front and the 4* backs they always get they will be in every game and some teams just seem to have your number.
10 2 with wins at OSU and Oregon D line will be scarry Good depth is much better because nobody will check out after A flesh wound
Dang, who are our 2 losses then if we beat OSU and Oregon? It'd almost be a let down beating those 2 teams, but then losing to 2 inferior (inferior compared to OSU and Oregon) opponents.
Oregon might be the second biggest name opponent on your schedule but possible won't be one of the top 3 teams you play.
