Premature Redshirt speculation

Who do we have the luxury of redshirting from this class? I would assume the freshman OL guys. And who do we have, besides Morrow and Prescott, coming off their redshirt year?

I think the 3 juco's and Quay can be penciled in with immediate playing time. Redmond, Nick, and the Brown's are the only other ones I think that may get playing time before the seasons over.

I mostly agree with you PMBRE, but I think Beniquez Brown will most likely end up being a redshirt because he's more of a raw athlete. Being that we really only have one true MLB right now in Bohanna, Richie Brown has a chance to jump into the two deep from day one.

I suspect, besides the Freshmen offensive linemen, that the WR's, Fred Brown and Samuel, some of the DE's, like Torrey Bell and Ryan Brown, for sure will redshirt, to give them time to build themselves physically. I think most of the class will redshirt, with a few notable exceptions. Quay Evans is ready to play, Nick James will likely not report until second summer session, so could be worked in, maybe redshirted. Nick Adams will redshirt and toughen up. I think Jordan Washington will redshirt. Adarrius Perkins will likely redshirt as a TE. Of the defensive backs, I think Will Redmond and Quadry Antoine may play, the rest probably redshirt. Antoine may wind up being a special teams star. Our MLB position is wide open. Both Richie and Beniquez Brown will be given the chance to compete there.

Last year, besides Morrow and Prescottt, we redshirted:

RB Josh Robinson
RB Derrick Milton
HB Devin Fosselman
S Zachary Jackson
OL Nick Redmond
S Kendrick Market
OL/TE Daniel Knox
DE John Harris
TE Rufus Warren
MLB Bernardrick McKinney
OL Justin Malone
CB Taveze Calhoun

This is off my head and pure speculation.

I was too lazy to look up last year's class. I've heard good things about Rufus Warren. Hopeful that he and Malcolm Johnson can do big things at TE.

I think we have a chance to slap the redshirt on most of these guys. Obviously not Evans or James or any of the JC guys. All the WR/RB/TE guys should sit and learn, we have great depth there. Schuessler will also most likely RS. If he sees the field then we're in trouble. I don't doubt his talent or what Mullen will eventually mold from it though.

The LBs will be interesting to watch. I hope they can contribute and i think we'll need them if just for depth. Can't be any worse than Maye last year.

...I have heard some very good things about most of them:

QB: Dak Prescott is very impressive, a good runner, with a better, more accurate arm than Relf. He runs as well as Relf and has a better arm.
WR: Joe Morrow was claimed by Jon Banks to be "hard to cover."
RB: Josh Robinson got some rave reviews.
OL: Justin Malone, probably the least recruited OL, has been a huge surprise at Guard.
MLB: Benardrick McKinney has been very impressive and is a great athlete at 6-4 235 now.
TE: Rufus Warren has drawn compliments at being able to play both the HB and inside TE.
S: Zachary Jackson is going to compete at SS or OLB.

There are a lot of others who are in the process of development and will contribute this year, then play increasing roles in a couple of years. This is strictly based on things I have heard here in Starkville.

Obviously the Juco guys play, Evans plays, Redmond plays, and Richie Plays. I think Antoine, James and Jefferson are possibilities. The rest should probably redshirt, but it will depend on how much progress the individual players from last year have made and what last year's redshirts look like compared to the entering Freshmen in camp. If they are clearly better, I think DM let's them play because he believes he can get more good players in the following years and he is aggressive. That said, they'll take in consideration what they think they have coming in the 2013 class.

From my experience the bowties always seemed to be more of a South Carolina/Georgia thing when it came to our students. At least the ones I knew that sported the bowtie were from that region.

Come to think of it, maybe we should change the term for Ole Miss players. Instead of redshirting them, we can redpants them. "He's going to take a redpants this year, so you won't see him until 2013." "He's just a redpants freshman. Give him time."

Had to try it out to see how it sounded.

This idea has promise.
