baffles. They're ranked in several Top 25 polls, and often tabbed as SEC East favorites despite their struggles last year and key personnel losses.

Wow! Ole Miss ranked below Duke???
I'm sorry, I hate them as much as any MSU fan, but they aren't going to be that bad. Not Duke bad.

I was an intern at the Sporting News one summer around a decade ago and I was told one day to come up with a list of my Top 25 college basketball teams for preseason polls. I then was called to a meeting where sportswriters, interns and whoever else they felt like asking all sat around a table and hashed out everybody's list and then came to a consensus on each spot. I don't know if this is how they still do their polls or if the writer just came up with his own list and had people comment on it, but at the time I remember thinking, "Why in the world would you ask me for a preseason Top 25? I'm just organizing your records room/Archives?" It was a great experience though and I loved every second I worked there.

poor man's Chris Relf, they probably shouldn't be ranked #1. Not yet at least.

“Vandy is always fighting an uphill battle. Stiff academic standards and a smaller student body than the rest of the toughest conference in football makes competing in the SEC a dogfight."

Vandy needs a placard with this quote. They can place it at their tunnel exit and slap it on the way to the field.

#4 Stanford has stiffer academic standards than the Nashville nerds and I don't hear them whine. What about the enrollment and standards of TCU? Theyhave a decent team. Why doesn't their academic crutch apply to basketball and football?

The chancellor who did that--Gordon Gee--is now the president of Ohio State. And I don't think it was a matter of not caring about athletics. Yeah, the football team still sucks, but I'd have traded baseball and basketball teams with them this year.
