Also build new concession stands, redo the entrance of the stadium, add a MSU baseball museum adjacent to the Palmeiro Center, have some statues of guys like Palmeiro, Clark, Brantley, Willie Mitchell, Thigpen, Masters getting carried away by his teammates and fans, and the Swan holding his JUGS gun (sarcasm on the last one). I don't think a statue of Polk should be added because his name is on the stadium.
The statues are a particularly good idea. Before your time, back in mine, we had some outstanding players who should also be honored; Del Unser, Sammy Ellis, Nat "Buck" Showalter, for example. Each time a statue is unveiled, there should be a ceremony with the honoree there. I think Paul Gregory also needs to be honored someway. He not only coached baseball, but other sports as well.
I'd also try to bring in some more concession choices like Papa Johns or some other pizza chain, Penn's, only because I remember them having a stand in the lounge and because it reminds me of my childhood (Bless my heart), and Lil' Dooeys.
The whole concession issue has always mystified me. I don't understand how they operate. It seems volunteer groups operate them. The question is who gets the money? After visiting some away sites, we lag behind in both the quality and selection of concession offerings.
I'd also like to see us put the retired numbers and program accomplishments back on the OF fence.
Absolutely! Maybe putting old #1 out on the fence might be appropriate.
Another thing I would like to see done is invlolve John Grisham back with the program, if it were me, I'd try to involve him with the museum somehow, like do interactive stuff.
There are many, many stories which involve MSU baseball, some funnier than heck. Someday, I'd like to see a baseball novel built around MSU baseball come out of him.
I'm not sure if this is possible, but expand the LFL. I'm thinking like add a tier of dirt that is a little higher than the original people, but flat so you can park your vehicle and still see the game.
Who is the woman architect who designed a MLB stadium? Maybe Greg should invite her back to do a review of possibilities, which would accommodate all the different ideas?
One thing that I think we should really do to help build the program is try to involve the students more, especially on midweek games that alumni like me aren't likely to travel to, mainly because of work. Stuff like Greek night- have a toga party, or wear Greek letters and you get a free hot dog and coke. Have a night wear you give away stuff like free chicken tenders from Abner's or nachos from Bulldog Deli. And my personal favorite- have college bands play on the field after the game- if there's a Led Zeppelin night, I'm probably there. Then on the weekends, we need to promote those games as well, but maybe gear those more towards the alumni. For example, Jackson Bulldog Club weekend- if you are in the BC and from Jackson, you get in free. Have ex-players come back and sign autographs. Finally, Diamond Girl bikini night! (HELL YEAH!!!) And for the record, I would do away with the chicken dance.
If you are going to have a Greek Night, make sure you involve the GDI's. Back ten years ago or so, the old B.O.M.B. (thanks for the memories Arrowdawg) did an online survey and came up with a lot of ideas how to make sporting events more an "entertainment" event. Although it was built around football, the same ideas apply to all major sports. Having Darius Rucker come in after the Spring Football Game was an excellent application of what we intended. Pre or Post game entertainment is a great idea.
I'd also have the grandstand Nazi's lighten up a little bit during midweek games. The grandstand should have squatter's rights during midweek. If your sitting in someone's seat, and it has their name on it, be courteous and let them have their seat, but odds are you'll find an unoccupied seat.
The Grandstand Nazi's don't check chairback tickets much during midweek. I have a chairback seat which my cousin has bought and he shares with me. He has had two seats over 25+ years. The owners of the chairbacks have been notified that in the future, in addition to paying for their annual tickets, they will also have to commit to making minimum donations each year. Most think it will be about $500.00.
