Pretty good year so far

We've seen marked improvement as a team. Let's not forget- in the pre-season, we were picked to finish last in the SEC West. We were one game away from winning the West.

And now, we are in the SEC Tournament, and pretty much a lock for a regional- we are also likely a two seed, and certainly no worse than a three.

Despite some on here who told me that Butch Thompson was "our problem", our pitching has improved. Is it where it needs to be? No. But it's much better than last year. From 6.87 to 4.31 as of right now. The biggest problem right now is our starting pitching getting us deep into games. That is something that I expect to get better next year- Stratton, a healthy Nick Routt, and then guys like Daryl Norris and Evan Mitchell, and maybe even a couple of true freshmen like Trevor Fitts and Jacob Lindgren or some wild cards such as Kendall Graveman or Luis Pollerena. Even if it doesn't, our bullpen should be very, very strong with Caleb Reed and Ben Bracewell coming back, and hopefully the return of Pollerena to the bullpen.

As far as the hitting, that went down from .296 to .284. That's fairly comparable especially when you consider the new bats this year. One other encouraging thing to me as far as the hitting- of the players that were juniors last year, only three primary starters did not improve- and that was Nick Vickerson who dropped from .328 to .305 and Cody Freeman who dropped from .301 to .294, and Ryan Collins who went from .271 to .266. We also have the SEC's leader in hitting as of right now in Jarrod Parks. Jonathan Ogden, Wes Thigpen made big improvements in their hitting, we had some freshmen that were pretty solid for freshmen in Daryl Norris, CT Bradford and Adam Frazier, who all hit over .250 for MSU.

Also, we improved our team fielding percentage from .958 to .969- and that's with Ogden struggling because of an abdominal strain. We also do a much better job of getting to balls and limiting bloop hits. That has been huge all year long- see Jaron's diving catch last night as an example. We really don't make a lot of mistakes on defense- like missing the cut off man, and etc.

Another interesting fact- our stolen base totals last year- 57 and this year- 82. This is another sign of increasing team speed, and also in part because of the fact that we are in the lead more.

And here's one that really jumped out at me- Last year, we struck out 431 times. This year 363 times- or 68 fewer times than last year. The home run totals went down, obviously, and I do think that is a place for improvement in the future- we need to recruit more power hitters to try ot balance out the lineup.

Finally, one thing I talked about in the preseaon was that the team's attitude would be noticably better. I don't think anyone will debate me on that. This team has a bunch of players that have come together and they bust their *** for MSU. One of the players from a couple of seasons ago is sueing Cohen essentially because he is a *****. OK, now that was what Cohen was trying to win with for a large part of the previous two seasons. No, not all the players were like Forrest Moore, but there was enough and if you have 10-15 guys like Moore on your team, there are going to be problems unless we have a coach that will coddle them. Of course, coaches that coddle players usually don't win. I think it's pretty evident that we've purged most- I'll even go ahead and say all of that from our system. Thank God. And at the same time, we're adding to our talent base. We've now taken the step from bad SEC team to average SEC team. We all want to be an elite SEC team, and the only way to do that is to add legit SEC talent until eventually we have a team that is like South Carolina, Vandy, Florida, etc. I feel like we are on that track. Part of that track is going to postseason play, and doing well in postseason play. That is the next thing that our players will get to experience, and once we get that experience, hopefully that translates into a team that will do well in the Regionals, and the future teams that will do well in the Super Regionals, and then go to Omaha, and then hopefully someday have a chance to win the National Championship. But as for the present, we'll see how our team does in the postseason and what kind of a draw that they get. I wish them well!

This has been a painful cultural shift for the program and for alot of fans who believed that we were just having some down years instead of the reality that we had fallen to the bottom of the conference. There are plenty of the 10% folks who tell us that you only need three years to compete--I disagree, but at year three we are in Hoover and will be in a regional. The examples people have used is Oregon (who is having a real mediocre year in year four) and Louisville (who is also mediocre this year). We need two more years to become an elite type team that has mainly seniors and juniors up and down the lineup each year without major turnover: this year we have Seniors that will mainly be replaced by our Freshmen from this year. My prediction this year was 35 wins, Hoover and a regional--I came pretty close. There are some posters who would hate Cohen if he won 50 games and the National Championship: they are idiots who really could care less about the program as long as they can be message board heroes. I'm ready to watch the next two years and see the rebirth of Bulldog baseball as a national contender.

and noticing that the same criticisms are being levied against the majority of those schools' coaches as we do here on the Pack. It really all comes down to wins and losses in the SEC. We were picked last in the West, and although I don't agree with every decision Cohen and his staff made this year, I chalk some of it up to interpretation because I notice, like I said earlier, some of the same arguments concerning other head coaches all over the internet. I ask myself if we the fans would really be any different if we were placed in their shoes. Would everyone agree with most of the decisions we made when we choose to yank pitchers and substitute pinch hitters. I can sit here and blast Mullen for not giving the ball to Dixon against LSU at the goal line. But I'll be damned if I could do a better job with this football program, or ANY other D-I coach for that matter, present or past.

It's all about the W's and L's at the end of the day, and this season Cohen is ahead of the curve IMO. That's good enough for here and now.</p>

Cohen has the most improved team in the SEC this year, he deserves the COY award. He has the program on the right track, now he he needs to get a few "difference makers" such as a stud hitter and a work horse starting pitcher. What has been the biggest weakness has been our starting pitchers, I have been really surprised at the lack of innings they pitch. I don't think we had a complete game all year. I think our relievers and defense were the most improved.

I would love to see us win a couple of games in the SEC tourney, I like our first game match up with Florida verus Vandy or SC team, gonna be tough to win unless we get a top performance from our starter and I really don't have a clue who will start.

Btw, biggest disappointment to me this year was Stratton, I really thought he would be our Friday night go to guy, not sure he will find his mojo the rest of this year but I hope he and Routt return and are difference makers next year.

I don't keep up with who we signed for next year, do you see a freshmen coming in a starting next year?

four or five years away from having a program like carolina or vandy, if things go well. I think next season will be a little better than this year for the simple fact that the pitching staff will certainly be stronger. The offense is hard to predict (alot depends on several young players that didn't play alot this year). Of course, alot will depend on the rest of the league as they won't be lying down. In two seasons (when bradford and that class are juniors) we should be pretty strong position wise, but we will lose a some good pitching that year. I think we made big improvements this year in spite of having a few glaring holes here and there. I like the offensive philosophy (especially with the new bats) and when we have better hitters who can run, we will really make things happen. But, patience are still key.

I would have liked to have had this year last year myself. It didn't happen for whatever reason, but I'm glad we're winning now and on the right track now even if it is a year off.

Oregon didn't have to deal with the attitude problems that we had to deal with in the past- they also may lose their coach to Southern Cal, who is looking for a new coach right now. I think the problems that they are having is at least in part because their recruiting is going to have some gap years to start with because they had to bring in 35 players at once.

Louisville has gradually gotten worse under McDonnell. He inherited a team with a first or second round pick third baseman and he had an ace pitcher that was really good that the previous staff brought in. He rode those two to Omaha in year one. He was a great recruiter at Ole Miss- albeit we were trying to recruit baseball campers only, which made it easier on him.

about how the program is progressing and what Cohen is doing to get us back to the level we want to be. The only issue I will say for me, and this is just my opinion, but I'm still not sold on Thompson as the pitching coach. I know our team ERA improved but I still feel a lot of that was due to the new bats and having a more experienced staff overall. Just seems under him that for every success story like Caleb Reed there are multiple other guys like Jones and Stratton that just lose their effectiveness altogether. I just hope he is one of our really good recruiters because I feel like if Cohen looked around there would likely be numerous other candidates that could do a better overall job than what Butch is doing developing the entire staff. Like I said just my opinion. We do also desperately need to get a couple of more guys in the lineup with long ball potential but based on our recruiting list I think we are trying to do that.

should pitch for us some next year, I think Will Cox will be in the bullpen and help out a little bit there from time to time. Brandon Woodruff- he bypasses MLB could be a dual position guy for us- he could be a corner outfielder/closer. I also think Jonathan Holder could help some at first base and he will pitch for us as well. One guy to watch for that not a lot of people are talking about is Philip Casey, a third baseman from Texas. He could surprise some people as well.

I agree that Stratton had a disappointing year- the most disappointing of any player that we had. A lot of players from Mississippi like him take a couple of years to develop- see Caleb Reed. I think he will be fine in the long run. He has to quit trying to strike evreyone out and try to be more efficient.

First off let me say this, as long as I have been watching Msu baseball, "most of the times" fans have questioned our pitching coaches. Johnson and Pat were the two most popular, hell I remember folks complaining about Steve Smith and several others so this isn't unusual. You know the saying "take him out, leave him in".
Second, when Cohen and his staff took over, we were in the worse shape with talent that Msu baseball has EVER been in before. It will take this staff a few more years to recruit quality SEC players, we have some but we need a few more classes to see were we really are with this staff.
Thirdly, I don't really know how good Thompson is as a pitching coach, he really doesn't have a lot of SEC talent to work with. Good players make good coaches.
Last, from what I've been told, Thompson is a good recruiter, if so he should be a good pitching coach in time.

Usm has signed some of the better pitchers in Ms this year. But again I don't really keep up with recruiting. I have read where Woodruff throw in the lower 90's and has good size. I see where you talk about the guys coming in as being relief pitchers, what about starters for next year (everyday players as well as a starter).
Btw, Evan Mitchell shows promise, but so did Stratton as a freshman, hopefully Mitchell will emerge as will Stratton and a healthy Routt returns.

My son is a Jr at Pelham and we're friends with the Fitts (have known them about 15 yrs now) and Pelhampitches him like crazy. I suppose it is typical HS pitching though....ride them toofrequently and have themthrow too many pitches in a season simply because you can and they are the best you have. I do know this, Trevor is as dedicated State fan as you will ever see. My son talks about Trevor's school lunchbox being like a walking billboard....hislunch box iscovered in State stickers.

supposedly he's got all this talent and as far as I know at MSU he's had the same pitching coach for 3 years now. So Thompson has to share pretty heavily in the lack of production we've got from him. My biggest concern is right now we are going into tournament play and I don't really feel all that confident in any starter we send out there. I guess Routt may be the best we've got at this point but that's a lot to put on a guy that isn't probably even back to 100% yet. Pollorena seems to be struggling a little more with every start himself.

have improved every year since he has been here as well.

He came from a 2A (I think) high school in Mississippi that was not very good. He went something like 1-7 his senior year, but he had a ton of strikeouts. Basically, he was a guy in the middle of nowhere that could throw hard.

was that his velocity was down last summer, but it was back in the low 90's- at least early in the high school season it was. I would imagine that he pitched less this year simply because Pelham wasn't as good this year.

I hope he doesn't play summer baseball. I will say that. It seems like more arms get ruined there than in high school- see Kirk Presley, CC Watson, etc. Not that high school coaches are totally innocent either.

but I hadn't heard anything about how he was throwing this spring. I agree with you about summer baseball.
