His solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps was better than Clapton's original. I didn't realize until late his in career what a phenomenal guitarist he was.

That solo was awesome, and I really didn't realize he was that great with the guitar either.

He's the only musician I've ever heard of that played all of the instruments on his albums. He only needed a band for touring. I was hit or miss with him because his music just kept evolving unlike anyone else I've ever heard.
Lenny Kravitz does everything on his albums. The first Foo Fighters album is all Dave.

using a Hohner knock-off telecaster. That was Prince's most cherished guitar. Only modification he ever made to it was he replaced the stock pickups with a pair of Kinmans, which came with bright white covers. Prince colored them in with a black marker - don't know if Sharpie's were on the market back then but probably something like that. Always thought it was pretty cool of him, all of the elaborate, customized guitars he could have used to honor George Harrison, that is what he used, and he tossed it in the air.

Didn't care for all of his music, nor his eccentric, often annoying ways. But he was a very good, successful musician, rode a damn big wave in his time, and yes, could play the **** out of a guitar. RIP

Heard this story that Prince was on a flight once with the Bangles. They weren't big yet, and one of them managed to sneak to first class and tell him what an I inspiration he was to them.

He said something like cool and then proceeded to write down some song lyrics on a napkin.

The song? Manic Monday.

And then Prince got up, walked cooly to the emergency door, popped it open and walked out onto the clouds.

Rip, Prince.

Fuking hell I'm trying to get over Chyna the WWE wrestler dieing today and now Prince is dead 2 hours later? Well my only question is who is number 3? Death comes in threes for famous people. If I was famous I'd buckle my got' damn seat belt. The reaper is on the hunt.

Merle Haggard just died last week.

That's the second "cool" musician we have lost this year. Bowie and Prince. Who will be the third? Not many left to choose from.
Lonnie Mack died the same day, but for some reason i didn't hear about it til three days later. a great guitarist who influenced many including clapton, richards, sr vaughn.

There's a great video on youtube of him and stevie ray doing "Wham."

The reaction is a little surprising. I was a child of the 80s. I can think of 4 superstars in the field of music from that decade:

1. Michael Jackson
2. Madonna
3. Bruce Springsteen
4. Prince

Not ranking in terms or talent of accomplishment, purely on star status/celebrity. And I'm talking about people who apexed in that decade. There are others who had long careers who were active in the 80s.....Anyway, the reaction Prince is getting is what I'd expect if Jackson or Madonna died. Wouldn't have thought Springsteen or Prince would warrant this......

maybe it's true, I really don't know everything......

MJ did die, and the reaction was like 100x this. I feel like whole countries shut down. I just remember seeing footage of seas of people from everywhere. Then, still weeks after, maybe a month, you still had the viral thriller videos people were doing. We won't be talking about Prince in 2 weeks. Not on that scale.

Yeah I know bringing a 4 year old thread back to life.

Just happened to stumble across this video on YouTube. Eric Clapton doing a version of Purple Rain.
