QB Depth, one year ago today …

After reading that ESPN.com article that ranked Mississippi State QB situation as #2 in the SEC, I got to thinking ‘how much’ difference ONE year can make.

One year ago, the QB situation at Mississippi State was a total disaster. The team had just completed spring practice with one healthy QB, senior Tyler Russell. Meanwhile backup, Dak Prescott had spent spring nursing a nagging injury. In Feb, State had signed one QB, 4-star, Cord Sandberg , who stated, “it was his ‘dream ‘ to play QB in the SEC,” but was also a highly regarded baseball player.

In May, when Steven Bench decided to leave Penn State and open his recruitment, his final two teams came down to the University of So Florida and State. MSU had a good relationship with him and had been one of the finalists before he had signed with Penn State but on May 23, Bench picked So Florida. It got worse when, two weeks later, on 8 June, Sandberg signed with the Phillies just 24 hours after being drafted in the third round.

There were plenty of MSU fans ‘second guessing’ Dan Mullen’s QB recruiting … especially after 2012 QB signee Nick Schuessler had only lasted a couple of weeks at State. With options quickly running out, the staff convinced Damian Williams to join the team.

And, that was the QB line-up for the ’13 season.

In the Feb ‘13, State signed two QBs, Nick Fitzgerald and Elijah Staley and had the additional bonus of having Fitzgerald join the team early and go through both Bowl and spring practices. Both are big (6-5 & 6-6) with strong arms and ability to run. With Fitzgerald getting valuable practice time, State looks to enter the '14 fall season with Dak, as the starter, Damien as a capable back-up with six games of experience and two true Freshmen available if needed.

As a bonus, State has two QB commits for the 2015 in Chason Virgil (6-2, 170) and Nick Tiano (6-5, 230).

In one year, the depth chart has gone from, one ‘healthy’ QB, one injured, and an unheralded HS Signee to #2 rated QB unit in the SEC.

That is crazy.

Wet Blanket say "4 of the 6 - we have no idea how good they will be"

So ...

That is crazy.

Wet Blanket say "4 of the 6 - we have no idea how good they will be"

Does 'wet blanket' prefer where we were one year ago, to where we are today? Did ESPN rate the '13 QB unit #2 in the SEC before the season started?

Damian turned out 'way better' than anyone on here OR anywhere thought he would. Both showed what they can do in the OM game. It may be just me, but I feel WAY better about the QB position than I did last year.

I agreed with you.

I'm saying what the Wet Blankets might say. Our QB situation is light years ahead of where it was in 13.

Which brings me to my final point: It no longer takes 4 years to build a program.

Disagree there.

It took 4 years to build an offense, and it took 4 years to build a defense without rolling the dice on a bunch of JUCO players.

We had a highly talented QB, but he never had a fully competent WR corp and the OL and RB situation was dicey.

We're where I want us to be and where I thought we could be when we hired Mullen. The QB situation is a product of what he's been able to do with jack ****. When these kids became varsity QB's we were beating Florida with a crash test dummy.

In one sense we are better off. Obviously we can see the future could be bright at QB.

In another sense we aren't any better off. Last year Russell got hurt and we brought Prescott in to carry the team. This year if our starter gets hurt we could be in a much worse situation. I like Williams but I think there's a bigger gap from Prescott to him than there was from Russell to Prescott.

Of course almost everyone, except possibly Auburn, is in this same situation. Any team that loses their starter will likely struggle.

I guess this makes me a "wet blanket"

Also I'm going to assume that at least one of those bottom four players is in a different uniform in two years.

Williams was a true freshman but.....

I agree we are stacked at QB. If and when Dak gets hurt we have some other folks to fill the void. But all these QB's will only go as far as the OL can carry them. So we can hae the #2 QB rotation in the SEC but if we have a #5 OL its going to be bring us back to 'next year'

Almost certainly, although maybe we could have a situation where we move one to a different position and nobody else transfers. I'd much rather have attrition after freshman or sophomore year than always go with one QB in a class and be in a situation where one injury or flameout puts you in a precarious position. As long as we can get two quality qb prospects, especially if one or both of them are athletic and/or big enough to play an alternate position, I say take two qb's.

I told everyone that would listen last year that Williams was going to be good.

I have a friend that knows him well and really believes he is a special talent.
