Do we know of any other school that`s actually asked for permission to speak to him or any evidence that any REAL interest in him by other schools has been more than just internet rumors ? I`ve fretted about this in the past like many others but after the dust has settled I really don`t know if there was anything to fret about.

edited to add: So I won`t mislead anyone....I don`t fret about it anymore.

I promise I walked away from that aTm game with a lot of questions about our football program. And I`m not talking about X`a and O`s. Something happened during the season that knocked Dan "off his game" IMO.

No doubt about it, felt the same way. I hope what we are seeing is a

refocusing on getting serious about the product you are putting on the field
and the effort that is required to recruit the players you need to win in this conference,
time will tell.

My curiosity is with the status of the memphis investigation. Could be related; might not be. Just curious.

Nashville sports talk radio continues to dismiss Mullen as a possible UT coaching candidate because of the "NCAA investigation thing." This is their pat answer every single time Dan's name is brought up. In their mind, he is damaged goods, not so much because of the investigation but because of the unknown surrounding the investigation. I think this Devinner thing has put some doubt in people's mind. If Mullen were going to jump, he probably should have two years ago. I think he is here for awhile....or at least until we have a 10 win season with no "investigation" surrounding our program.

First off,

Do we know of any other school that`s actually asked for permission to speak to him or any evidence that any REAL interest in him by other schools has been more than just internet rumors ?

I don't know anything about any other school's interest in Dan, but I understand that the way the process works is ...

Any school that needs a new coach makes a list and 'guages' any interest by contacting the Agents first. Only If there is some mutual interest, will the school be contacted for permission.

Auburn asked for permission from Bama to interview Smart. It gets really tricky for current HCs. So, if Strong interviews at UT, one would think he has some real good indication that he will be hired ... or he risks losing support at Louisville.

So, it begs questions ... are schools not interested in Dan or is Dan not interested in leaving?

I say UT is damaged goods as well - 2 more years of probation & sanctions - who would want to walk into that mess ?

His demeanor changed after that blowup about injuries in the press conference. He, Megan or Scott may have used that as an example to him to not be a dick. In my opinion though, I'd rather him have the swagger and biting nails.

don't know if that's when it happened but his demeanor has definitely changed. Something doesn't seem quite right...hard to gauge.

I think reality punched him in the gut.

I can't put my finger on it, but he did appear less energetic in the 2nd half of the season. Heading into the Bama game 7-0 with a very energetic fan base - it was the best he could possibly ask for in setting up for that "big season". Alabama firmly established that the premier teams in the conference are still head and shoulders above us. A&M then reinforced the message. I think it was a moment where he realized that winning championships here is tough - probably much tougher than he previously accepted in his own mind.

Now, I'm not knocking the program. I think we can have success at MSU and, when the stars align, be in a championship hunt. I'm just thinking Mullen had a medium term plan for what he could achieve at MSU in terms of Ws/Ls and that point in the season punched him in the gut and proved otherwise.

It will be interesting to see how Mullen reacts. I'm sure he's worked 10x harder than he ever has in the last few years and probably expected more wins because of it. Does he walk the talk he does with his climbing the mountain stories, amp up recruiting, address scheme issues, and do the best he can to get us to the next level? Or, does he accept the comfort zone he's in currently with 6-8 wins and decent bowls. I think most MSU fans have an appreciation of our historical performance and are happy with that. Mullen has (or should have, at least) bigger goals than that so there's a chance he could be throwing a small pity party for himself after reality sank in.

He wasn't in serious consideration by UT, but not because of anything pending in Memphis. If the Memphis investigation gets bigger or worse for MSU, it will also ensnare several other SEC schools.

The ADs and assistants I've talked to said that his stock dropped considerably because of his record against non Ole Miss SEC West teams.

I think Mullen has been butt-hurt since his unsportsmanlike call vs Bama and the first half failures against them. Just like we all got our pride knocked down from 8-0 We Believe Hail State well Dan took it much worse.

I have a theory as to what happened to our team this year. And it's directly related to Mullen. Here's my theory: The team took on the personality of its coach. Coach had no fire this year; thus the team played flat. Coach is carrying a heavy burden because of the uncertainty of the "little hiccup" we had to come to light early this fall. This situation is bigger than we think. In fact, it is big enough to affect our program and Coach's career (at least in the short-term). I hope my theory is all BS.
