If you have correct mechanics, hand size should have little if any effect on your shot. Only the pads and fingertips of your hand should be touching the basketball. I suppose if your hand is so large you can't comfortably grip the basketball without your palm touching it, then it could effect your shot.

For most of modern basketball history there’s been a general idea that big men have a harder time shooting free throws because they have such huge hands. My question is, how true is this? Michael Jordan said himself that one of his huge competitive advantages was that he had huge hands. Now we’re seeing so many stretch 4s and stretch 5s at the college and pro levels that shoot outside shots at a high level, surely they have huge hands. On the opposite side of that, if you look at the basketball in Amari’s hands, it’s the size of a tennis ball to most normal people and it’s pretty obvious that complicates his shooting motion. What’s the reality? How does hand size actually affect a player’s shot percentage, particularly at the free throw line?
Go shoot some free throws with a volley ball then a regulation basketball and you'll quickly understand.

Dr J made free throw. MJ made free throws.

I shook hands with Dan Issel one time and my hand disappeared in his. And I can palm a basketball.

Big Dan made free throws.

So I’m not sure on this myth. But I have heard this all my life as an excuse.

Shaq didn’t have big hands for a man his size. He just couldn’t make free throws. And didn’t care.

I think Shaq said he had broken his wrist when younger. Perhaps it was kind of stiff? Perhaps he didn't much care?

I coached jr pro against Dan Isabel. We won I went out the door bragging about beating Dan. He was right behind me. I felt two feet tall he was so nice.

Okay. I’m in Istanbul up at 2:30am to watch. Got my UK hoodie on. Got a couple cans of Guinness to drink. Let’s go.
