Question about Playoff Eligibility

I noticed that some of the 3As in the Richmond did not play a full district schedule. Like TJ instead of playing district foe Hermitage are playing 1A Essex and William Campbell, Colonial Heights instead of playing 6A Thomas Dale is playing 2A state power Appomattoax. I'm sure there are a couple others but my question is since they are not playing a full district schedule are they not eligible for the playoffs. I know 1A Rappahannock County and Chincoteague are ineligible for the playoffs because of this rule.

If this is from Maxpreps, I'm pretty sure it's incorrect in the sense of Dale and Colonial Heights. I believe they play each other this week. Not sure about the other teams you speak of, but I'm almost 100% sure about Dale.

No Colonial Heights plays Appomattoax this week and TJ plays William Campbell and played Essex earlier this year
My apologies. Very surprised to see them both playing out of district. I thought Maxpreps had made a mistake when I first saw it early in the season

Don't know if there is a rule where you must have a full district schedule to be eligible. That would be unfortunate for the kids of TJ....I don't think there is a rule and maybe if there is, there is a waiver. Maybe it just makes this ineligible for the district title.

I believe the rule is that you have to be a part of a district and play some type of district schedule. Schools like Rappahanock, Chincoteague, and Nelson County are not eligible for post season play because they are not a part of a district. I could be wrong though.

Because Thomas Dale is a class 6 team and Colonial Heights is a 3, they (ch) can waive the right to play them in district play. Same withbthe class 3 teams in Richmond. You are not forced to play up more than one class in district play. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the clarification on the rule

Actually Navy, the rule is "more than two Class levels above your level". A Class 3 is "required" to play Class 5 schools in their district.

Hey Springers76, ask your sources why TJ and Hermitage were not obligated to play each other. I could be wrong in my understanding that a team must be "more than" two Class levels above or below a team to be permitted to opt out of a district game. But I don't think I am.

Just look at how many teams are just two classes apart and still choose to play each other. I think we would have seen more teams opt out if only a two class separation was true.

I'm sure there are others, but the only one I know of is Class 3 Colonial Heights not rescheduling Class 6 Thomas Dale for this cycle. (Both are Central District).

Am I wrong somewhere?
TJ and Hermitage are in the Colonial District? TJ is Class 3, and Hermitage is Class 5?

So what does this mean for TJ? Herm is 5A.[/QUOTE
They are two class levels up 3+2 =5 lol. Like more than one.

But not "more than two" as required by the rules.

There are other factors that come into play, I have learned. Too much to spell out here, but District teams are not necessarily obligated to play each other, or be penalized with respect to forfeiting a chance at the playoffs. Hence, Hermitage, vs Marshall or TJ. (Don't shoot the messenger, guys.)

I've heard the same thing, 2 classes apart, they don't "have to" play each other. They can option out of those games if they want to. Armstrong is a Capital District team. At least HS, in the Capital, has opted out of playing them ( I think Varina did too.. They were replaced by Riverbend. We still play class 4 Hanover

Just an aside from this conversation I was talking to my cousin in Allen, TX yesterday evening. She was telling me her son and daughter go to Allen High School which has over 6400 students.

Hellfar that's more than many entire school enrollments of many counties!

I knew their stadium was nicer than many colleges around the nation but I had no idea the school was that big.
