if he decides to skip the rest of this year with the injury and take a medical RS and come back next year, does that mean we are done with recruiting for the year? I'm thinking it does as by my count we would have had 13 players projected on scholarship next year had Lewis finished out as a SR this year and we added the 4 signees. Of course then we released Denson from his scholly so I guess if Lewis retains his scholly for another year we would be back at 13 with no need to replace Denson with anyone else. Would that be correct?

yes, if Wendell returns- it means we are done. My guess is that he feels Wendell would be better next season than anybody we have on our radar currently

I'm not an expert on NCAA rules but I thought in football if you have a medical redshirt the player doesn't count towards your ~85 or whatever the number is.

Is it different for basketball?

I don't know what the exact threshold is you have to be below...

How many games can he play and still get a MR? He played in 8 I think.
to qualify but whatever it is Lewis is below it in games played for this season. Rick Ray has already confirmed to the media that Lewis qualifies to receive a medical RS and it is under consideration. Even IF Lewis can come back in 6 to 8 weeks, and that's a big IF in that timeframe, he still won't be in any kind of game shape after staying off of that leg for that long.

I actually believe its 30% but...

But I'm not certain.
whatever it is Lewis has already played more than 20%. Lewis played in 8 games and we have a 30 game schedule plus at least one SEC tourney game (8/31 = 25.8%). Anyway here is an excerpt off the Hail State Beat Blog that confirms he does qualify: -----Senior forward Wendell Lewis had knee surgery Wednesday and is likely out for the season. It’s a huge hit now, especially as Lewis had seemingly turned a corner in his final two games before the injury, but here’s the upside: Lewis played in few enough games, he’s eligible for a medical redshirt. It’s up to him whether or not he returns in 2013-14, but the option is there for the big man. While many in Ray’s position might want to usher him back as soon as possible this year (he’s out at least six weeks, possibly more), Ray said he’d rather do what’s best for Lewis and his future.“I think the best thing for Wendell would be to medically redshirt,” Ray said. “It allows him to build some sort of a resume to play professional basketball.”Considering Lewis has started, almost literally, only a handful of games, a full season of tape and progress could go a long way in his desire to play professionally.http://hailstatebeat.wordpress.com/

A medical redshirt player always counts tiwards the 85 man limit. The only not to count an injured player towards the limit is to make him permanently ineligible to ever play for you again.

The rule is no more than 30% of the teams games and none in the last half of the season.

I would rather move on you never know what you are going to get from wendell and well have gavin ware next year as our starting center with 7 foot fallou ndoye as his back up so I would rather see us move on with these two.
