Was Dontae Jones this good?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vz0v8c06lNA

I just got off a weekend night shift where I had a lot of time to kill so I watched this video among others. My question is did Dontae Jones have the game of his life or was he just way better than I remember? I was twelve at the time, but I vividly remember watching this game. However, I don't remember him having moves like this.

Dontae Jones was a damn good basketball player who caught fire in the SEC and NCAA tournaments. Dude could freaking jump out of the gym.

Nice vertical, good fall away jumper, could get a rebound or outlet and go all the way between defenders and score....be nice to have him on last year's team.

More incredible the guy was a friggin scholar.....15 hours in one summer session

I never saw any of the guys who played in the 60s.

Dontae Jones could shoot 3. He could dunk, lay it up, post people up, spin, make any move he needed to make to score from anywhere on the offensive end.

'Cuse me? Orange, Miss. St. advance Under'Dogs put leash on Cincy, 73-63
March 25, 1996|By Ken Murray | Ken Murray,SUN STAFF
LEXINGTON, KY. — .TC LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Mississippi State knocked the swagger out of Cincinnati and the home-court advantage out of Rupp Arena yesterday.

In a game that resembled a backyard brawl, the fifth-seeded Bulldogs floored second-seeded Cincinnati, 73-63, to win the NCAA Southeast Regional final and a berth in the Final Four.

The Bulldogs will take their bruising style of play to the Meadowlands next Saturday, where they'll meet another long shot, Syracuse, in the national semifinals.

They can only hope they'll still be underdogs when they hit the Big Apple.

"We like being the underdog," said 6-foot-11 center Erick Dampier. "Everywhere you looked, newspapers had us as the underdog against UConn. Even Dick Vitale picked us to be the underdog. Every time he picks us to be the underdog, we win."

The Bulldogs converted disbelievers with every step of their remarkable run to the Final Four. They are 8-0 in March and have won 15 of the past 17 games.

In the last two weeks, State beat three teams in the top seven of the AP poll -- then-No. 1 Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference tournament championship game, No. 3 Connecticut in the regional semifinals and No. 7 Cincinnati.

Yesterday, the Bulldogs (26-7) led wire to wire, beating the Bearcats (28-5) at their own physical game. A searing start by 6-7 small forward Dontae Jones effectively took the largely partisan crowd of Cincinnati fans out of the game and helped earn him the outstanding player award for the Southeast Region.

Jones hit his first six shots and scored 15 of Mississippi State's first 18 points -- including 10 in a row -- as the Bulldogs opened leads of 13-4 and 20-10.

"Those are shots I usually take," he said. "The adrenalin was pumping more than usual today. The ball was feeling good coming off my hands, and I tend to keep shooting once the shots are falling."

Jones had 17 points at halftime and 23 for the game with 13 rebounds.

Mississippi State's backcourt of Darryl Wilson (16 points) and Marcus Bullard combined for 27 points and eight assists.

In the game within the game, the Bulldogs were able to survive Dampier's second-half foul trouble with a seven-point, four-rebound game from Tyrone Washington off the bench and a 10-rebound contribution from Russell Walters.

Our talent was outstanding and lady luck was with the whole team. Jack almost had a heart attack - everything we threw up went in. The little white dude (can't remember his name) was falling backwards and hit for a three. Great game. I remember a Kentucky player saying after the game "They just took our heart."

our toes were literally on the court when the PA announced anyone going on to the court would be arrested. The team exited the court in that corner and went to the locker room. Dontae showed back up in a few minutes for some more love. What a day.

I was there that day:

1. My favorite MSU basketball game of all time.

2. Dontae did not even start until about mid season. He was not considered a team player by Williams.

3. Dontae impressed Pitino so much that day that he was drafted in first round by Boston who Pitino went to coach the next year.

4. Kentucky was a great team. Not only did they win the national title but the won almost every game all year by 20 points.

5. MSU that day never backed down or changed their strategy. Most teams would have tried to slow the game down once they got a lead and tried to hold the lead. MSU came at them aggresively the whole game.

except that Dontae was drafted in the 21st round by the Knicks. He was traded to the Celtics at the end of one season.

Pretty sure there is no such thing as the 21st round in the NBA draft..

people seem to forget that we had a Sweet 16 team without Jones the year before- and it took National Champion UCLA to put them out. Coach Williams did just that- coached. He had the team set all types of screens for Wilson that just wore defenders out- it also created easy baskets for other players on the court. And it was also an outstanding defensive team. Damn I miss watching well-coached basketball teams at State

Dontae was the final piece of the puzzle though to make it a NC-type of team. He did bring alot to the table without a doubt, especially once he learned he had to play defense with effort.

It's still hard to take losing to Syracuse. It should have been us playing Kentucky for the title that year. Would have made one helluva championship game.

Not sure what my fingers were thinking as I read Wiki, other than he wasn't drafted by Boston. That much I remembered on my own. And, actually, the first round. I am a dubmass. But I did make a 29 on the English section of my ACT, for real.
