UVA installed a state of the art sand based field with additional drains, etc. The area behind home plate out to where the "virginia" ends is fieldturf. The rest is natural grass with the sand base. The comments about the field when this decision was made was that the field would drain, "within one hour of a heavy downpour". Two years ago when we hosted UC Irvine we had torrential downpours and we got the SR in with 2-3 hour delays. Supposedly this field design will shorten that time. That's all I can tell you. Supposedly it is designed for this type of weather.
