Question for the pack: How much better is this team than Dan's previous teams?

I feel like we've generally been better than our record has shown for some time now. In fact, I feel like we've been a borderline top 15-top 20 team for the last few years; the problem was, in the toughest division in history, there were always 4-5 teams even better than that. We've been competitive with the very best teams in the land.
So, even if we go from 8-5 to 13-1 or something, is this team really a quantum jump? I think its more like the last one or two pieces of the puzzle that made us a little bit better, but that marginal jump is enough to win the games we would have lost in a close one last year.
I want to believe this because it makes our performance thus far less of a fluke.

I disagree, I think this is by far our best team. We have never had and offense

like this that had a defense to go with it.

This team is NO fluke; Dan has been adding the pieces and building depth; State has never been this balanced and talented on BOTH sides

1. Dak 2. Dan (probably because of Dak) is doing a much better job than he has in the past. I think from a talent standpoint we`ve left 1 to 2 wins "on the table" per year the last 5 years.

I think we're a good bit better, but some of it is confidence. Dak is such a great leader. The lsu game was such a spring board for our program.

I look at it like this. A college football team is entirely different than a sport like basketball or tennis where you only have to land a couple top notch recruits and you're suddenly good.

A football team is a complex machine that has to be well designed, all of the pieces have to be there, and it has to be properly maintained and used correctly. You take any of those things away or even a single cog out of the system, and it will eventually break down. So I don't know that I'd say that this team is markedly better from an overall talent standpoint than what we've had in the past, but we do have all the right pieces for once, and the performance on the field is far from a fluke.

Lastly, Dak is just a beast. The scouts can say all they want about what he needs to improve, but if you have a 3rd down play and only need 3 yards to go, tell me who you'd rather have at QB right now. The guy is virtually unstoppable on short yardage plays

A lot better than every team but 2010. 2010 we had a stud team everywhere except WR and Qb. Relf was good but not quite to the point where he could keep good defenses honest.

Last year we had basically all the pieces in place except our WRs needed some time to grow and we needed an off season to work on tailoring the offense to Dak. We were still probably a top 20-25 team last year and if we had gone into the season expecting Dak to be the man, and he hadn't been hurt, we probably would have been a top 15 team.

2012 we were not a good team by the end of the year. Basically like LSU this year. A lot of pieces in place but just no where near to putting it together.

2011 our O-Line once Carmon was injured was bad enough to keep us out of the top 25. Had he stayed healthy, we were probably a fringe team in the top 25.

I would rank our teams as 2014, then a pretty decent gap, then 2010, 2013, then a pretty decent gap, then 2009, 2011, 2012.

Man, I loved Relf. He's one of my favorite dogs of all time. But he was terrible. That's part of his allure.

I think if we had even just one of this year's starting WR's and a QB with just half as much ability as Dak (ie Williams) we would have beaten Auburn that year and gone to the Outback or whatever.

Still, that team had so many holes. There was a colossal dropoff between our starters and backups. I think this year's team could alternate half the starters and backups every week with little fallout, and that's really the difference for me. If we loaned our backup defensive linemen to Vandy they'd have the best DL in the East.

It's not a fluke.

Dak is by far the best QB we've had. He's a better runner and passer than Relf, he fits the system 10x better than Russell, and he's 2ft taller than Farve or Tyson Lee.

J-Rob is as good as any running back we've had. I never believed the hype, but he's made me a believer. The guy gets 2-3 yards when there's nothing to get. He never goes down on first contact.

We finally have multiple receiver's taller than 6ft, and they can actually catch. We were throwing jump balls to 5'10ish" Arceto Clark for about 3 years. Wilson, Morrow, and Fred Brown give us something Mullen hasn't had at WR until now.

OL isn't overpowering, but they work well together. Two 5th year seniors with over 30 starts each, Beckwith has been here 4 or 5 years, Malone is a 4th year junior with 1 full season of playing time. And also remember Senior enrolled January 2012 - so he's been through 3 springs and now his 3rd fall. These guys have all been together and coached by Hevesy and Mullen for 3-5 years.

DL - one word, depth. We've had good players but never the depth we have now. And these are grown men. Almost all of them have been in the program 3-5 years except for the freak Chris Jones.

LB - again, we've never had this kind of depth. McKinney is as good or better than Wright and White, but the supporting cast is more athletic than what we have had. Wells, the Browns, Jackson, Holmes. They are flying around like mad men.

Secondary - this is the only place I'd say we're noticeably weaker than previous teams. I like our CBs but they aren't quite on the level of Banks & Slay. Our safeties are ok, but we don't hear their names called a lot. Although our LB crew is so good that the safeties don't get as involved in the run defense. So they don't always show up on the stat sheet.

Special teams - we're finally getting some touchbacks. Our punting is good as normal. Our FG kicking... jury is still out. I feel like this year won't be our best, but won't be our worst. Coverage units are good so far.

So almost every unit on this team is as good or better than what Mullen has had in the past. I think the biggest differences are Dak, the size of our WRs, maturity and knowledge of these 4th & 5th year guys, and quality athletes in both the first and second string. There's also a sense of "been there, done that" with these guys. They don't know what it's like to have a losing season, many of them were here for 7-0 and what followed, losing an egg bowl, winning 2 must win games against Arkansas and UM last year. There's so much maturity and leadership on this team. It's just different than anything we've even seen at MSU.
