Question for the Pack: Isn't this rumored deal for Stans basically the same as Croom & Polk?

I haven't followed anything too closely so I might be "Samsonite"-way-off here, but basically it is, "You get another year/chance IF you make drastic changes to your staff."

The difference lies in that Polk and Croom said "Go 17 yourself" to the deal so they were fired.......and Stans is saying "Whatever puts food on the table for Ezekiel, Jedediah, and (*insert Old Testament name*)."

Question 2: If I'm on the right track here, then where does the disappointment in Stricklin come from? How else do you handle the firing of arguably greatest basketball coach in the history of the university? I wish Stans was as stubborn as Polk and Crooms and rejected the terms but apparently he is okay with staff changes (I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing).

I'm in no way a Stans supporter, in fact, I'm on the other end (especially after this season) and I think it is time for a change in basketball.... but I also think this "one more year IF changes are made" is how it should be handled. Anything sooner, given Stans' resume (especially in context of MSU's overall resume), seems like a total Ole Miss move.

The Ninja said no thanks. Croom was ready to bring in Al Borges and Byrne said we are done with your West Coast ********.

Considering he was only 9 months removed from a CWS appearance and Templeton was still in charge, there is no freaking way he was forced out in any way.

than we have now with Stans because Croom did nothing very well. Wasn't much of a recruiter, wasn't much of a coach nor was he even that fond of being at MSU in the first place. At least for whatever else you can say Rick does get talent into the BB program and has been very loyal to MSU its just a matter that we often underachieve with the talent he gets. Even with Polk, I don't think many people would question that he was a good teacher of the game even as he had gotten older, but if you quit bringing in SEC level talent into the program it really doesn't matter so it was time to move on.

Has there ever been a case where a failing head coach has gotten all new assistants and turned the program around, even on a short term basis? I'm saying this because program after program seems to do this and as far as I can tell has never worked. Why should it work this time?

football all the time but given the more direct control a Head BB coach has, given you are only dealing with 12 to 13 players and these same players play both ends of the court it doesn't seem to be very common to throw blame on assistants when things aren't working. As folks have said here countless times, Stans is a control freak, he is what he is and that's not going to change much if any. All he wants assistants to do is help recruit and scout games, he pretty much wants to dictate everything else himself. So a new set of assistant coaches COULD help the situation but with Stans' personality I don't think that it will because he won't let it. I thought it was a huge mistake when Kirby left, definitely the best assistant we had, to go out and replace him with a JUCO coach that might help us sign a particular recruit rather than bringing in another guy that could fill Kirby's void in experience.

I think Byrne would have kept him around another year. We were one year removed from the CWS, the guy is a Hall of Fame baseball coach that's a MSU legend, and we were going through a transition with the athletic dept.

It would have been interesting to see what would have happened after the second losing season, because I can't imagine that Polk would have taken very well to being fired.

I guess there was no way to aviod what happened with Polk other than fire Raffo, and even if we did and fired Raffo, Polk might have flipped his lid for us firing Raffo.

God I'm glad the Polk II era is over.
