I was reading about the new Central HS in Wise, and I was wondering if any of you guys grew up out there and went to, and/or played football for, Pound or JJ Kelly? What was it like on Friday nights? I have to believe it was a close knit community, and not a bad place to grow up?

Incidentally, I saw the pictures of the stadium at Central. DAMN! Looks like a small college facility.

Richlands played there last year. Aside the parking issues, that place is amazing.

Wise holds 2500. To compare that, Richlands holds 5000 and Graham holds 10,000.

Here is the list of all schools and their stadium and gym capacity.

Those numbers are not accurate. Orange County doesn't hold that many at its "stadium" it might be 1000 tops. I noticed several others that are wrong so I would like to know how they determine those numbers. Seated? Standing? Combined capacity etc

Schools self report I believe. It's supposed to be the number of people who can sit combined on both sides.

Worst place that ive watched a high school football game. Dont get me wrong its beautiful, but the stands are so far away from the field i just felt disconnected from the game.

Yeah, that's true. I had kind of forgotten about the stands being really far from the field. They are also not very steep, so when you're on the top row, you're quite a ways away from the field.

Thanks. I believe that the standard used to measure for seating capacity is 18" per person.

I think we can all agree that 18" is probably unrealistic with today's population.

I looked over some of the capacities in your link. I'm not sure if they were self reported of not, but I see a lot of poetic license with some of the stadiums I'm familiar with. I also see some that I believe are understated. I wonder how "up to date" these numbers are?

I agree with your sentiments eluding to sitting so far back from the sidelines. I hate that. I would rather be "low and close" than regular height and sitting back to an excess.

Good place to grow up? Absolutely. Nearly all of far SWVA is.

Close knit? Maybe Pound. JJ Kelly did have one state championship in football in '82 and Pound went to a state game, but neither had huge football crowds, nor much success in the last 20-30 years of their existence.

Yes, beautiful stadium, but like the others mentioned, not the best place to WATCH a football game. Plus it's on a mountain top and the wind will absolutely cut you into on a cold night.

Those stadium numbers are accurate for Bullitt park. 2500 on home side and 1000 on visitors.

Thought you might enjoy these too....

Thanks UnionFan. Good stuff there. The first article tells it exactly as would imagine it to be.

I see Union has their first game tonight. Good luck to the kids and fans. I hope you start the season with a resounding victory.

And all is left to say is Powell Valley Who. Consolidation was the right thing to do but I'm not sure it would have flown when Appalachia and Powell Valley were both Group A teams in the 80's.

The Central high school complex is beautiful ! The view once you get up there is fantastic, but as was stated in another post, it was one the worst places I have been to to watch a game. The atmosphere was not very good and not because of their fans or ours, both teams had great fan support, but the bleachers are so far back from the field it was really hard to watch the game and to have any kind of atmosphere. If they could find a way to move the bleachers in, it could become one of the best places to watch a game. The sunset at the start of the game was beautiful because of the location on top of the hill !
