Where is a decent hotel fairly close to Hurley High School? I want to see a game there and it’s this season or never. The last regular season game of the year is my only shot, so I’m planning to make the nearly six hour trip out there. I just need to find a decent place to spend the night.

Incidentally, I’m going to stop in at Bowlings Place in Rocky Mount and judge for myself how good their hot dogs are.

I would love to help you, but I'm 2 hours away from Hurley myself and wouldn't have a clue as to where to stay.

Hurley isn't exactly close to anywhere. Maybe a poster from Graham, Richlands or somewhere closer to thefe could chime in.

I’m not answering out of any local knowledge, but my guess from a quick scan of the map is it’s going to be the Comfort Inn in Grundy. After that, probably something in the greater Tazewell metroplex area. I’ll be interested to see what (if any) feedback you get from posters who hail from out that way.

This is a long shot, but you might recall a long post I made five or six years ago about a one-day excursion a friend and I made to Tazewell, Buchanan, and Dickinson counties. We visited Grundy that day. I wanted to get up to Hurley, because (like you, seemingly) I was intrigued by looking at their stadium on Google Earth. Alas, there just wasn’t time.

Glad to see you back @SpartanO’Yore. You are correct. I used to have to travel to Oakley/Oakton quite a bit back in the day and we stayed in Claypool Hill or Grundy. They have a new Holiday Inn Express in Claypool Hill and the Comfort Inn in Grundy. Funny story. We reserved a room at the Comfort Inn. The description said lovely views. When we checked in there was a sign on the door that said please remove your muddy boots. When I looked out the window of our suite I saw a sheet cliff face and the Huddle House. My boss said the description should have indicated the view included a three hundred pound waitress named Pretty. That is no lie!

Now I’m scared to stay in Grundy. Not because of the view, but because there may actually be somebody named “Pretty”.

Well, God willing, and my dumb *** can stay healthy for awhile, I’m headed to the game at Hurley on Nov 7. And I’m going to take a chance that I can dodge “Pretty” that Shades of Navy warned me about! The Comfort Inn in Grundy makes the most sense. Closest place to Smiley Ratliff Field for the late night run back to Grundy after the game.

We will just wander the area on Saturday. Any suggestions of something neat to see within 50 miles or so of Grundy? Two places I definitely plan to visit are Haysi and Burkes Garden. And of course Bowlings Place in Rocky Mount for a hot dog, if at all possible. And if my gut can handle it, a stop at Moore’s on 460 on the way home so my wife can finally see the store with the tree growing through the roof. And if I stop, it would be a sacrilege to not get a couple of hot dogs.

On.the way out, I’m going to stop and have lunch with some friends in the Martinsville area that I met at a Magna Vista game if 2014. Then on through Galax to ride by the house our daughter once owned.

If any of you are along this path and just want to shake hands and put a face to the name, that would be fun.

The Breaks Interstate Park, the “Grand Canyon of the East”. Especially if you’ve never been there. You could go to the Breaks, then drop down south to Haysi. There’s really very little to see in Haysi. The old high school was still standing when I was out there in ‘19, but it was in a very run-down state. My guess is by now it’s either been turned into some kind of senior housing facility, or has been razed. The field where the Tigers played is just down the road from the school.

Or, if you head back east from Grundy, you could take 83 and 16 to Tazewell. This would take you through War, which was were Big Creek High School (famed in song and story) was located. Big Creek is where Merrill Gainer (later of PH in Roanoke), Willis White (Salem),and Joel Hicks (Pulaski Co.) got their careers started. Big Creek is also where Homer Hickam of “Rocket Boys” and “October Skies” fame went to high school, along with his brother Jim, who was the head coach of Northside for thirty years. Sadly, the old school and field are both gone now. If you look on Google Maps, a large new structure (an elementary school perhaps?) stands on the old site, at the corner of Rocket Boys Drive and Center Street. Anyway, that route takes you right into North Tazewell, where you’re a hop, skip, and jump from Burkes Garden.

Burkes Garden is worth a visit if you’ve never been before. We used to go once a year, during our week-long visit to my grandparents in Tazewell. My granddaddy had a good friend who lived in the Garden. I remember heading back to Tazewell down that narrow, curvy road at night.

If your route from Rocky Mount takes you up 220 to 581, then west on 81, I live very near the exit 140 park-and-ride. It’s right beside the interstate. It’d be great to arrange a brief summit, if possible.

Great info my friend. I’ll make it a point to meet up with you.
Coach Davis, who has been Coach Mills assistant coach and best friend forever, graduated from Hurley. He is going to try to put me together with a couple of relatives at the game. He also said The Breaks was a must visit. Any covered bridges that are open to the public in that region?

Humpback CB, near Covington
Jack's Creek CB, Woolwine
Clover Hollow CB, Newport
Link Farm CB, Newport
Meem's Bottom CB, Mt Jackson

Thanks Mike, it looks like Jacks Creek might be the only one that fits in on this trip.

What about easily accessible waterfalls in my travel area? I know you are the water fall expert.

That area of Virginia I haven't explored much for waterfalls. It may be because there aren't any easily accessible waterfalls in that area that I can think of. Maybe someone from the area will have an idea. The ones I'm thinking of are 3 or 4 miles RT. (not what I would consider easily accessible)

Humpback CB is the prettiest IMO and there's a beautiful waterfall about 20 minutes away that's visible from 220N. (Falling Spring Falls 66 ft) Park and walk 200 feet to a good viewing spot.

Unfortunately, the Covington area is not really on your way from Dinwiddie to Haysi. Maybe on a different day trip.

I lived and worked in Buchanan County for 8 years. I worked in Hurley for 2 years and then in Oakwood for 6 years. This was 1982 to 1990, I was a coal mine inspector.

There is nothing like an experience at The Cliff...it's a shame it's days are numbered.

Back in my day the only local motel was The Anchor Inn. I believe it's still open. As an aside the Anchor Inn restaurant was where Smiley Ratliff held court during lunch for many years.

Who was Smiley Ratcliff. Or the better question is why did they name the field after him?

I don’t know, it’s not far from where we will be rambling. I’m sure going to but it on my list. Hank you for the tip.
If that's not too far out of the way, you'll be very close to these:

Thank you sir. I can see multiple trips in our future. This type of stuff is exactly what I said I was going to do when I retired.
