Question on Masoli and Mullen

A Rebel friend of mine is trying to tell me that Masoli turned State down twice. To be honest, I haven't followed the situation very closely, but it seems unrealistic he would turn down an opportunity to play in an offense more similar to what he ran at Oregon to play for Nutt. I'm not knocking Nutt, just stating that he runs a different offensive scheme. And from what I remember reading, he was turned down by us and LA Tech.

Now, had we been in the same QB situation that Ole Miss was in when Cotton left, I would have gladly taken him.
I can tell you for fact though that Masoli did not turn us down.

but one thing is fact, if it comes out of the rebel camp, it's going to have positive spin for them.

I can't say either way, but I don't think we made any advances toward Masoli. There may have been a momentary "Wow, a Heisman candidate is available" type of reaction, but then logic started to set in. We were OK at QB coming out of spring so we didn't need him.

Our staff met and appropriately decided he wasn't worth anyone losing their job over. Masoli was beating down our door well before he knew where Oxford was. He needed to find an ideal situation that involved a desperate team/coach. Seems he found it.</p>

He's walking on at Ole Miss. Given that, I don't think he was in much of a position to turn down too many people. He was just looking for a place to play, probably would've liked a scholarship, but he's walking on in the SEC. That was his best option. If you wanted him and had a scholarship for him, I don't see why he would've turned it down.

And a smart move by Nutt. He knew Masoli didn't have any other options and he used that to his advantage.

We never offered him anything and he was offered a chance to play at Ole Miss before Cotton decided to leave. They can spin it any way they want to but Nutt knew he needed a qb with or without Cotton and then he spun it to look like he had to take Masoli. Your rebel friend is spending too much time with Chuck and the Spirit.

But the most likely scenario of how things went down is that Mullen met or talked to Masoli and liked what he saw but a young AD trying to make a name for himself couldn't risk taking a problem child and being chastised for it if Masoli messed up again in the future. I think Strickland will do a good job for y'all but I imagine if there were, in fact, talks that he is the reason no offer was made.

and decided not to take him based on that conversation. Not claiming Mullen is morally superior to Nutt in this case, because I don't think we're as desperate at QB as y'all were. And I don't think Cotton leaving hurt you much. I doubt he would have been able to contribute anything even if he'd stayed.

And I trust Nutt enough to be okay with him taking a guy with a bad history. I will give Nutt the benefit of the doubt almost always.

This was never the case with Orgeron.

It is amazing the spin these people come up with to make themselves feel better about doing what they have always accused State of doing (ie having a team with thugs on it).
