Was the decision to move in another direction 100% Browns or was it made above him (ie Lyons)? That answer might change the dynamics of how things are perceived.

We will never know since they’ve redacted everything that was worthwhile of knowing. But when it was occurring, it seemed like it was a Shane Lyons decision to be done by Kneel Clown.

He's working for Coach Bowden at UL-Monroe as his DC. UL-Monroe is in the SBC, one of the premier football conferences in America, so he's probably doing okay.

Obviously the university acted in a difficult but necessary manner in letting Koenning go In a mutual agreement to have him leave. Probably worked out better for him that his records were sealed.

The real question is who cares and why?

WVU in 2018 under Tony Gibson gave up 27.2 PPG. WVU won 8 games that year. Lost in the bowl.

WvU in 2019 under Vic Koenning gave up 28.8 PPG. WVU won just five games that year. No bowl.

WVU in 2020 under shared leadership with Casteel as analyst, WVU gave up 20.5 PPG. WVU won 5 regular season games and a bowl.

WVU in 2021 under Jordan Lesley gave up 23.8 PPG. WVU won 6 regular season games and lost in the bowl.

WVU football gave up more PPG and also lost more games under Koenning than those who coached D before and after.

Ive always understood it to be from Lyons, but above that, the diversity committee may have had a hand in it.

He was the best most proven coach on our staff.

Koenning started his college career as an assistant coach for the University of Memphis. After Wayne Bolt left Troy University following the 2002 season, Koenning was hired by Larry Blakeny as his replacement where Koenning led Troy to a Top-10 ranked defense in 2004.

In 2005 Koenning became defensive coordinator for the Clemson Tigers. Clemson ranked in the top 25 for scoring defense and total defense during his tenure. It was ninth in total defensive in 2007. Koenning resigned his position on December 2, 2008. Koenning's defense was the highlight of the Clemson 2008 season. He was hired at Kansas State by head coach Bill Snyder on December 8, 2008 to be assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator (alongside Chris Cosh) at his alma mater.[2] The K-state defense improved from 118 to 38 under Koenning.

On December 18, 2009, Ron Zook announced he hired Koenning as the defensive coordinator for the University of Illinois. He improved the Illini defense from 91st in the country in 2009, to 38th in 2010, and 7th in 2011. Illinois gave up just 291.8 yards per game and ranked fourth in the nation in pass defense, fifth in tackles for loss and ninth in sacks. After Zook was fired from Illinois at the end of the regular season, Illinois made Koenning the interim head coach for bowl game against UCLA in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.

After Koenning led the Illini to a win in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, he was the hired by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. In his first season at North Carolina, his defense finished third in the nation in tackles for loss with more than eight per game. The defense that year only allowed a little over 25 points per game. In 2013, North Carolina improved dramatically over the second half of the season, securing wins in six of its last seven contests. In five of those games, North Carolina held its opponents to less than 20 points, including the 39–17 win over Cincinnati in the Belk Bowl. For the entire 2013 season, North Carolina allowed 24.3 points per game, which gave them the 48th-ranked scoring defense.

Koenning returned to Troy on December 17, 2014, when he was hired by new head coach Neal Brown as defensive coordinator for the Trojans. Koenning then followed Brown to West Virginia in 2019. He resigned that position due to backlash from allegations of player mistreatment.

In January of 2022, Terry Bowden selected Koenning to serve as defensive coordinator at Louisiana–Monroe.

I clearly remember our D performed well in year one and got better as the season progressed. I wish we hadn’t signed KM or had to deal with any of those issues in the court of social media.

Too bad Koenning couldn’t keep his racist beliefs to himself- he has no one to blame but himself but it’s strange yet telling some only consider him and not the players or the university who were affected by what he did.

So much for freedom of speech and free thought with you mental midgets. Why do you support speech and thought suppression? Vic Koenning is not racist. What is truly racist is the mentality of the left when it comes to race. You weenies make an issue about the peoples color of skin on a regular basis, and no one else really gives a fk. You and your cancel culture are actually racist by definition.

Ok. What did he say that was racist? I genuinely want to hear your interpretation of what constitutes that phrase.
I also want to only hear phrases confirmed by a witness, not that Martin didn't seem like a completely honest kid that would never lie to tarnish the reputation of a coach.

I guarantee you that came above Brown as Brown had no one close to being a decent replacement for Vic. It's a shame, because he has a track history of success.

We will never know if what Koennig said was racist because we do not have an unbiased or corroborated account of what was explicitly said. We live in a world where institutions like the Smithsonian promote the idea that "timeliness" and "work ethic" are white centric ideas and thus expecting a non-white person to display them is "racist". Also a world where an OU coach reading a player's own words back to him is as racist Jim Crow. Maybe Vic said the most vile, racist slurs since Robert Byrd. However we can never take a racist claim at face value given the number of hoaxes (BYU/Duke, Smollet(sp?), Wallace, etc...) and the outlandish idea of broadening racism out to "expecting the same of non-whites as whites". So the charge of racism has been so flippilantly used and perverted in one direction, someone would be stupid to accept it at face value anymore.

So if that’s the case, does Brown get a pass to at least make any necessary adjustments on defense staff or otherwise to try to fix that issue and in turn, would that not redirect some of that heat over to Lyons?

I agree, the answer to my question may never be known bc the university squashed anything getting out, but perhaps that tells the true story without saying it out loud.

Absolutely not. He left just before season 2. It's been over 2 years and Brown hasn't really replaced him and has been doing this committee business without a true identity for 2 full seasons

That’s probably fair. I’m just trying to reason with myself that Brown can right the ship bc I don’t see a scenario that we make changes at least this year.

Noone has the right to say or do everything anywhere. As a freedom destroying rethuglican you of all people should know that.

Besides, you act as though ONLY Koenning had any right to do or say something. Why don’t you think the student athletes or university have that right? Only racists can do or say what they want, is that the way it works in your warped hate filled mind?

In reality and away from your nonsense, there are RULES if you work somewhere regarding what you can and can’t do or say and discrimination and/ or harassment is a part of that. I know you rethuglicans hate rules and law, but if you ever had a job you’d probably realize this— usually posted and certainly given to all hires to read and sign.

Koenning violated the policy willfully and the university after reviewing facts agreed MUTUALLY with him that he should depart. End of story.

No idea why you right wingers think freedom of speech includes hate speech, inciting violence, discrimination— but since you are obviously without education, then try reading the law instead of pretending you know what you are talking about and getting all worked up every time someone does wrong and is punished as they must be.

Free speech is for all speech, even if it hurts someone's feelings. We dont have free speech as a constitutional law for just certain speech. Its to protect all speech, even controversial speech. Why dont you read the constitution and bill of rights.

That’s not what I recall. I recall a defense that improved every year from a team that couldn’t even spell defense prior to VK.

And also the point of the question was that if Brown was forced by Lyons to fire his DC, then perhaps some of that heat should be transferred over to Lyons. In addition to the dumb decision to extend him.

so is the underperformance because he is an assumed racist or is it because of something else, like his capability as a coach or even the time needed to institute change to the degree others had with better results. Dumbass bigot you are! look up the term bigot and you'll see you.

Buck, we DO NOT know what Koenning did - the records are sealed. We DO NOT know if he "violated the policy willfully" The records are sealed. We do not know the facts - the records are sealed. Blasting "right wingers" is not something that's part of this conversation. Without the full record we DO NOT not know what happened. Your blasting someone "since you are obviously with education" just because they disagree with you show an unwillingness to discuss the issue and we can't really do that because the University has sealed the records.

Every coordinator ends up in one of two ways
1) Fired
2) Becomes a head coach

Dana was a great OC. Does that take away from the fact that he is a mediocre HC? No. Both things can and do coexist.

Bud Foster would have likely been a for **** HC. Still a great DC.

Even if Vic is average, he is far better that what we have right now.

Vic wasn't a great DC..UNC was last in defense in the ACC..look, he was 60 and an assistant at Troy..
