Question re our pass defense.

Mississippi State managed to hold South Alabama to three points in a basic 4-3 scheme. If the Jaguars featured three, four or five wide receivers, MSU kept two corners on the field and used linebackers and safeties for help in coverage.
It's similar to what the Bulldogs did against Southern Miss and UAB. MSU is allowing 311 passing yards this season.

As the Bulldogs transition into conference play, expect more complex schemes that MSU hopes can stop one of the top team's in the nation.
"This week will be a totally different deal," Mullen said.
How much of our pass defense problems have been playing with only 4 DBs against 4 and 5 wide sets?

It's been corners getting burnt, so I would say none. I think its scheme+corner technique. We only gave up one deep ball to USA in cover-2. The others there was no safety help. Against UAB, on all of them there was no safety help. If you are playing man with no safety help you are going to give up plays if you don't get pressure. But in that situation, the cb's CAN NOT (/engie) let the receiver by them deep.

That's kind of my point. There was no safety help because there were only 4 DBs. Not trying to sugarcoat it, because you're right that when there's no safety help, the corner CAN NOT get beat deep. And actually, now that I think about it, at least a couple of UAB's bombs were on 2 WR routes where we kept 9 at the line of scrimmage. It does sound like we've been holding back a good bit on our defensive coverages though.

I think we will run a base 4-3 like we have been versus LSU. Stopping the run is the top priority. But against ATM, I would like to see nickel zone blitzing schemes. The problem with that is if you run a 4-2-5, which LB do you drop? Wells is like a huge db anyway and B Brown has been all over the field. I'm not in favor of dropping any of those 3. I would like to see us run a 3-3-5 with Jones and Smith at the ends and Nick James playing nose.

ETA - the 3-3-5 would probably open up huge running lanes for draws and such. It's really hard to stop Sumlin's schemes, I don't envy Collins there. Dude needs to go pro already.

if we rush 3 and drop everyone into zone, on anything other than a last second play, im gonna lose it.

with all day to throw the ball and athletic options to get the ball to, its just a matter of time before a wr finds a soft spot in our zone. 3 man rush is teh suck.

I hate to use the term 'vanilla', but our offensive and defensive schemes up until now have been pretty basic. I expect many different false looks and hidden packages with our DBs from now on. I also expect our offense to be more confusing.

These quotes are pretty much accurate. These earlier teams have come in knowing they couldn't run against State's Front 7, so they (UAB) ran complex patterns.

State didn't disguise its coverages - played largely man against UAB and largely Cover 2 against USA.

LSU will keep things closer to the middle of the field. The emphasis will turn this week to State's DB's making tackles.

I think the packages to this point has been preparing the defense to play toward LSU's offense. I expect some of the coverages to change but the personnel to remain the same.
