You might find this hard to believe, but the best BBQ ribs in Memphis can be had at Houston's. It's not a BBQ restaurant and everything on the menu is great. It's at the northeast corner of Poplar and Mendenhall.

I know it sounds goofy but their chicken tenders (that aren't actually on the menu) are awesome. They use tempura batter.

Anything at Patrick's is full of greatness.

Buckley's Lunch Box at Poplar/Yates has great burgers.

Houston's is a great restaurant. Call ahead if you're going there though. There's always a wait, but they do have a nice bar if you're not in a hurry. Their French dip and their burger and fries are good too, and the Thai steak and noodle salad.

BB King's downtown actually has really good ribs. But as far as just an all around BBQ place, I have to go with Central BBQ. The Commissary is excellent too, but it's in Germantown. They have the best pulled pork, but the ribs are lacking to me.

Why does Lil Dooey's get slamed every time there is a bbq thread. It is not the best as Herbiestreet describes, but it is good. Fairly consistent and a lot of variety, and it is Starkville. Lil Dooeys is used alot by MSU for functions. I guess we are used to it, and it is not a novelty. I remember eating there as a freshmen with my wife now of 22 years and we still love it

Also secret awesome tenders: Papadeux. I got a frozen pork chop at Houston's

once. Ice cold in the middle. Haven't eaten there since.

Lil Dooey would be the best BBQ place in about 90% of towns in the Southeast, even among those that have another restaurant. It's just that it's not quite the best. But it doesn't suck.

Dreamland, however, is way overrated. I've never left that place and thought "damn, I can't wait to come back."

I recommend their Hawaiian Rib Eye if they have it at that location.

They used to have a Houston's here in Nashville. It was my usual first date choice until they closed it down (and I got married).

If you want something comparable to understand if you'd like it, I've basically replaced Houston's with J Alexander's.
