Quote from last night's public forum on Sunday sales

<p class="bodytext"></p>
<p class="bodytext">Marnita Henderson, the Republican candidate for mayor who lost to Democrat Parker Wiseman this spring, also was opposed to Sunday sales.</p> <p class="bodytext">"Starkville is a certified retirement community," Henderson said. "Does the sale of Sunday alcohol help draw new retired residents? I think not."</p>
<p class="bodytext"></p>I'm admittedly a long way from considering retirement locales, but I would think having the option to enjoy a Bloody Mary with Sunday brunch or a glass of wine at dinner, if one so chooses, definitely comes into play for retirees. Option being the key word.

Maybe Backer, 6pack's resident retiree, can help me out here, but I think Marnita is out of touch with reality.

I don't have facts to back this up, but it seems like there is a sign in all the smaller cities you drive through that says "such and such city, certified retirement community".

And seriously lady, retirees have not **** better to do than to drink.

Agreed. Also, while Starkville may be a "Certified Retirement Coummunity," it's also the home of MSU, the state's largest university, and without MSU, Starkville would be a certified dump.

Edited for spelling, and to add that from my observations being a "Certified Retirement Community" in Mississippi is not necessarily a good thing.

I'm sorry I just don't understand the fascination of stopping Sunday alcohol sales. They make it sound like legalizing Sunday sales is like legalizing murder.

affordable cost of living, low taxes, low crime rate, quality medical care, recreation, educational and cultural opportunities, and most importantly - a warm, welcoming community.
I grew up in one of the towns listed, and while it is certainly not the worst on the list, it is sorely lacking recreation and cultural opportunities.

No matter how obvious the sarcasm is, there will be some that just completely miss it. I read the whole damn article twice looking for that reference too.

Don't feel bad, I went so far as to search "Sunday" "alcohol" and "sales" in the article using the Find feature.

Now I don't feel like a complete dubmass. (because I reread paragraph five 3 times, then read the whole damn article twice!)
