Sylvester Croom recruited Chris Relf to be a dropback West Coast offense quarterback. Let that one sink in.

I'm convinced that Croom was the worst quarterback talent evaluater in the history of college football. Hell, his two best quarterbacks he ever had were Omarr Conner, a Sherrill recruit who he moved to wide receiver, and Tyson Lee, who walked on. The West Coast offense requires an accurate, precise quarterback, which Relf is definately not. He ran the wishbone in high school for God's sake. Great job Croom, well done.

that Croom had no clue about the west coast offense period. It's also a pass first offense, whether you're talking about the Bill Walsh version or the Gillman/Coryell version. Croom tried to make it a power running offense built around the running back, and that's actually against one of the west coast offense's main principles- throw to get ahead, and then run to stay there.

If he really wanted to run the west coast offense at MSU, the very first thing he should have done was find a QB, which he failed to do every year except maybe his last year with Tyler Russell. That position is essential to running the west coast offense. He should have gotten a guy like Josh Riddell or that Kevin Vye guy that Mullen is/was looking at pretty much every year at the very least.

was LT. I just hope and pray that we continue hiring University Presidents and Athletic Directors like the ones we currently have so we don't sink back into the abyss. It is tragic that we kept someone like LT on the payroll for so long (and Croom for that matter).

Croom had trouble finding any QB that would come here. I think he signed everybody and anybody he could get a commitment from.

he might have had a chance to recruit a quarterback. If I'm a HS quarterback and some guy is recruiting me to be coached by a running back coach, I think I'm going to take a pass on that school.

Well at least Relf has a shot at actually developing under Mullen into a good QB...
