http://sixpackspeak.yuku.com?topic=50220/What-are-your-concerns-with-the-MSU-football-team-this-year- this is the thread from last year where some of us voiced our concerns - its fun to go back and look at some of those. <div>
</div><div>Here are mine:</div><div>1. Pass Rush - I think we will be adequate against the run, but I see nothing outside of a damn good blitz scheme that is going to get us to the QB. Right now, the only sacks I envision are going to come from Whitley, Hughes or Wells on a nickel blitz.</div><div>2. OL Depth - big trouble if someone goes down.</div><div>3. Schedule. No way around this. </div><div>4. LB - like I said in another thread, I dont think this group will be as bad as some think. Just having Cox/Boyd/Eulls up front should make their jobs a lot easier vs the run, and all of them have the speed to play well in coverage.</div><div>5. Can we limit our turnovers like we did last year. That was a HUGE part of our success.</div><div>6. LT - I can't say that it is not a concern, but of all my concerns, it is the last.</div><div>
</div><div>What I am not worried about:</div><div>1. RB - especially with the reports that Robert the Deuce is running like he has been shot out of a cannon.</div><div>2. WR - best group of WR that I have ever seen at State.</div><div>3. Secondary - will continue to be salty on the perimeter - need to see some improvement on intermediate/deep middle of the field.</div><div>4. QB - it is as simple as this, as awesome as Mullen's offense has been from a historical perspective for State, it is going to take another big step forward from Relf to see if we can actually move the ball effectively against a top notch defense - Mullen has not done that yet. If he lights up LSU or USC early this season, look out. Similarly, if we struggle to score on Auburn, we should be worried.</div><div>5. DT</div><div>6. Starting OL</div><div>
</div>

1. Will State be able to handle expectations? This is the first time since 2001 that we have been ranked in the preseason and have high expectations.
2. Schedule
3. The Auburn game - I honestly think that makes or breaks it for us b/c we will be 1-2 after LSU more than likely if we lose to Auburn.

Hyped all four years. Though we had our moments in '81 and '92, all 4 seasons were still major disappointments.

So considering what we had to replace - 3 NFL players on D; a 1st round pick on the OL; an overachieving enforcer at C - I have plenty of concerns.

<span style="text-decoration:underline">Concerns:</span>
DT Depth: Losing Howie hurt. Outside of Cox & Boyd, we have very little experience.
Kickers: I have not heard good things coming from our scrimmages. I think they went 1-7 in one of them. That could cost us a game.
Relf's Health: That guy takes a damn beating every single game. We're lucky he held up all of last year.
Auburn Game: It is a MUST win game!

If he goes down we drop 10+ ppg against SEC opponents.

I see us 9-3 with Relf 6-6 without: AUB UGA and USC being the games we lose without #14

Not sure how you can say you're not that concerned about LT. We're playing a guy who has never even played the position since high school. He's literally had 2 months of practice to learn to play the position. I'm very concerned about that. I agree with you about the pass rush.

But of all my concerns, it is last. This comes from first hand reports from people watching some of the closed scrimmages. He can hold his own. He is not going to replace Sherrod, but he isnt going to have a year like Saulsberry had his first year either. <div>
</div><div>Agree with the other poster about Special Teams, especially punting. That definitely should have been on my list.</div>

I think we take for granted the good job Hutchins did for us last year. We are a team that thrives on field position.

1. Depth at defensive tackle
2. Performance at Left Tackle

Of course if Body or Cox is injured then Carmon could feasibly slide back to the defensive line if the backups suck. Then that would leave Clausell all by himself. I just don't like having deficiencies on the lines of scrimmage. That's why I pick us going 7-5, because we are largely relying on luck with respect to injuries. I think 9-3 is an outside possibility.

#1 Injuries... can't imagine what will happen with the o-line if Saulsberry or Lawrence go down. Same can be said for the d-line.

#2 Punting - Hutchins & Feldwere awesome for most of last year.A few bad punts can be difference makers for the entire season.

#3 Schedule - I hope the 4 earlyroad games don't wear on us. But the good news is that the South Carolina game should be rocking. First big Saturday game of the year.

#4 Mullen having his first real upset loss - UAB could be a scary game. 4th road game in 6 weeks, 11AM start time, and they played us close last year.

I am probably one of the few not worried about our pass rush. I thought McCardell & Stigers have looked promising at times. Not sure how they'll do against the run, but I think they can provide adequate pressure on the QB.

This is Mullen's third year. He is still in the rebuilding stage. He should win six or seven games his third year. We will do that. I have not gotten tied up in all the hype after last season. We still don't have the talent. I keep on reminding my self of the fact.

..you sound like patdog & the crew who claims Cohen should be given 10 years to rebuild the baseball program.

I've never seen a bunch of people so willing to exhibit the patience of Job when it comes to placing a winning program on the field, yet becomes furious when a game is lost during the "rebuilding stage."

Mullen has rebulit about as good as he is going to rebuild.

He has a very good QB, a stable of RB's that is the envy of any SEC team, a talented, deep secondary & some proven assistants on staff.

Yes, there are question marks, but even the #1 team in the nation (whoever that team may be) has question marks.

My only concern for this squad is injuries.

Key injuries early on will possibly keep this team out of a bowl.

You can build baseball faster then you can football. We really sucked in football. We really did not have any talent. I always thought that it was going to take three years to get to a bowl game. So in my opinion that is where we should be in the third year that is Bowl Eligible and I think we will be that at six or seven wins. It takes a while for a small school like miss state to turn things around in football. It's not a excuse it's the fact. Plus we have to worry about the Indian curse kicking us in the nuts. Do you really think this is the best Miss State will be with Mullen and he has finished rebuilding? Pleas explain what you mean.

We don't have a single backup OL who is ready to play in the SEC. From what I have observed, our #2 OL is horrendous.I mean they are really, really bad.

We also have zero depth at DE or DT. If Boyd or Cox goes down early, we are going to be in a world of ****. The thought of relying on Virges, Eulls (he is supposedly looking good), and Jones (all 255lbs of him) at DT is a rather unpleasant thought. Losing Howie could turn out to be huge.

I'm sure I will be blasted for being overly pessimistic, but I have seen nothing that leads me to believe we can sustain injuries along either line and still have anything resembling a decent season.

In fact, he may be our best pass rushing DT. So many times I saw a player push back the interior line last year and looked up to see it was #60. He plays a lot bigger than 260. In addition to that, Virges is supposedly playing much better now that he is healthy.

He is going to have to play some meaningful snaps this year, and I had been worried about whether he was capable of doing that.

I like Jones a lot; I just don't like the thought of him being forced to play a significant amount of snaps at DT. I think he would wear down. He does get a good pass rush from his DT spot, though.

Have you heard whether he and Eulls will line up at DE any? Against a teams like LSU or Bama, I would like to see someone who is solid against the run at DE. Stigers and McCardell scare me in that regard, although I think McCardell may actually be able to provide some pressure on the QB at times this year.

to stay qualified academically, to stay sober and to stay out of mullen's doghouse. And to stay off Twitter.

Relf's health is my biggest concern, not really sure what to expect if he blows an acl in memphis...

And stay in on 1st and 2nd down, or any other short down/distance plays - for exactly what you mentioned, he is stout against the run. <div>
</div><div>And I wouldnt be surprised to see Cox flex out to DE with Eulls in 3rd and short and other short yardage plays - Cox did that quite a bit last year and I am sure he will a little this year too. A line of Cox/Boyd/Jones/Eulls would be hell to run on.</div>

He also mentioned that he wouldn't be surprised to see a freshman play somewhere on the DL due to the lack of depth. Your comments have made me less concerned with the DL than I have been. I was pretty worried about whether we would have enough bodies to last us all year.

even more critical.
I have said all along we need to go 2-2 at worst against au,lsu,ga,sc.
Anything better than 2-2 is gravy.

He was a weight lifting fool in HS and hasn't backed off that. He's not quite as bulky as a lot of DTs and that could get to him at some point in games but it hasn't surprised me that he's effective based on his weight room work ethic. I'm not talking about the BS that every program spreads about being prolific in the weight room. Devin is legitimately stronger than most.

I thought he had a shot to be a really good run stopping DE with plus pass rush potential until he got hurt. Still, he's obviously doing a great job at this level.

Depth at our skilled positions won't mean anything if we can't block or get pressure on the QB. Both lines depth concerns me way more than LT or anything like that.
