1. Hard to take too much from this game, as Rider was terrible and tired from playing Monday, causing them to be unable to hit the broad side of a barn (2-18 on threes). But there are a few things that seem repeatable that we can perhaps draw from this win, in addition to several concerns.

2. Tariq Francis was superb on both ends of the floor. His defense was active, and his offense seemed smooth and confident. 4-8 from deep is huge, and his 20 points were on just 10 FG attempts, so he was something people thought he would not be — efficient.

3. Same with JMike - he is the clear floor general, and he played under control and showed a more fluid offensive game on his way to a 15 point (5-9, 2-4), 6 rebound, 3 assist, 2 steal, 1 block and 0 turnover game. 2-4 on threes continues his improvement from deep that began last year.

4. Dylan Grant definitely looks more confident as an all around player and took over for a stretch of the game, finishing with 17 points (6-9) and 7 rebounds, and he played above the rim with a couple of monstrous dunks.

5. Darren Buchanan looks strong, but his use on offense seems to be as more of a Point Forward. He did hit his only 3-pt attempt, but he’s going to get to the line a lot because most of his offense will come within 15 feet, and he needs to shoot FTs better than 2-7.

6. Although Rider was woeful from the field, Rutgers’ defensive energy and rotations were very good. There never seemed to be a time when a Rutgers defender was out of position, and we made the Broncs work for every point.

7. Now for some negatives. Although we outrebounded Rider 47-46 overall, we gave up a whopping 21 offensive rebounds. Now some of that is because Rider missed so many shots (18-65 for 27.7%), and many of the misses resulted in long or awkward rebounds, but a 56.25% defensive rebounding rate is horrid nonetheless.

8. I liked Badalau’s overall game and court awareness, but he shot 1-12 (1-6 on threes), and most of his misses were way off. He was, however, a willing defender, and he contributed 7 rebounds (3 offensive, 4 defensive). But as our reputed “best shooter,” he needs to do better, period.

9. The center position was obviously a huge concern coming into the season, and tonight’s game does nothing to quell that concern. Ogbole did play solid defense, grabbed 10 boards, and had 2 blocks (plus a block that bounced up and into the hoop), but he was 0-5 on all attempts around the rim, including a blown dunk. Baye Fall played a shift in the first half and made no impact whatsoever, and then he mysteriously didn’t play at all in the 2nd half. Bryce Dortch played in the 2nd half and blocked a shot, and Gevonte Ware played in garbage time.

10. We didn’t get much from the other key freshmen Mark, Nwuli, and (surprisingly) Zrno. They didn’t hurt us, mind you, but didn’t make an impact. Zrno did hit 2 threes, but he also airballed two other threes. However, on opening night, I’m not going to get too concerned about these guys just yet.

Good report Buchanan if he continues to go to the hole had better shoot foul shots better
JaMichael continues to improve
Pikell also not happy about the offensive rebounding number in the post game

Good recap.....agree with everything. Zrno and Badalau will have some hot nights from 3 as you could see there form looked fine.........even though Zrno air balled 2 of them........it seemed like nerves more than anything......obviously to be decided. At least this team feels like a team we will want to root for.........Pike will definitely be back in his comfort zone from the standpoint of roster construction.

11. More in the concern department - our shooting was rough overall at 25-64 (39%), although we were saved by having a good night from deep (10-27 for 37% on threes). But we were bad at the FT line (21-33 for 63.6%). The poor shooting led to a long drought in the first half and a shorter drought in the 2nd half.

1. Foul Shooting is still a major concern. Why are we so bad every year?
2. Backcourt, Francis and JMike were very good. Francis was outstanding.
3. Only 7 turnovers is also outstanding.
3. Buchanan had the strongest moves to the bucket.
4. Rider getting 21 offensive rebounds is a concern.
5. Ogbole getting 10 rebounds is nice.
6. Ogbole not scoring at all could be a problem.
7. Grant solid all around game.
8. Hope it was just first game jitters for Badalau.
9. New AD in the house.
10. Although 6:00 starting time might be tough for many, thought decent crowd and gets you home at a decent hour.
11. Blew away the point spread and the under was a smart bet if you care about such things.
12. Balanced scoring is always nice and seemed unselfish with the ball although missed layups early.
12. Pleasantly surprised even if it was Rider.

You made this conclusion based on him being a freshman in his first game with minimal minutes? Wow this board never ceases to amaze.
I didn't mean for it to sound like a conclusion. It was just an opinion based off only one game, and the performance of Francis. Looks like the fourth guard behind JD, Francis and Zrno. Fourth guards aren't usually big contributors.

He did not have a good night as he let the Rider guard get 2-3 offensive rebounds because he didn’t box out and then made it worse by fouling. However, very little to conclude offensively as he was not out there long and didn’t get too offensive. Need more time to conclude but he played really well against top California high school competition.

This team is going to be awful in conference. I don’t know how anyone could’ve watched that and come away with a different conclusion.
What is awful? No one expects this team to finish top half of the Big Ten. Can they get 6-7 conference wins? I think so. More than that will be very hard. The roster is clearly not top level. If they compete for every position and move the ball, they will win some games they shouldn’t.

Shelby completely disagrees with the official scorer re: Ogbole being 0 for 5.

He did miss one dunk but the other 4 purported misses were no-look passes he was trying to richochet off the glass to open teammates. Had to be that, because no human being alive could truly be that off from so close on actual shot attempts.

I actually thought Rutgers looked better than my expectations. Francis is going to be a headache for teams and I thought Buchanan and Grant looked the part. I still think 7 wins in the BIG is the ceiling but based on one game they looked better than I expected!

We’ll just have to agree to disagree. IMO This is not a big ten roster. Not even remotely close actually. This rider team was awful so the stats dont matter. Using the eye test, we’re going to be reliant on guys that wouldn’t play anywhere else in p5.

And if 6-7 wins in conference is the upside in year 9, then maybe we should reconsider our strategy. Even with that low bar I don’t see us achieving it.

With regard to Ogbole’s shooting, last year he shot around 58% on putbacks and dunks in almost 50 attempts. I don’t expect him to take many shots thoughout the season, but he will likely not have many 0-5 nights either.

Pleasantly surprised at talent level in first game . Pike has assembled a group of guys that can compete in the bottom half of BIG. Win total about his average— 15. Worth watching

How was Rider tired from playing a game 2 days prior in VA? These are 20 year old kids not 60 year old men. Don't buy that as an excuse for their poor play

There were clearly some first-game jitters out there and some areas of concern. But in a season where will likely see no more than 11-14 wins, I'm not going to complain when we get one. Congrats to the guys on a nice start to the season.

Perhaps extrapolating too much but it seems key to this team may revolve around how much we can play Davis and Francis. I felt really comfortable with them two + Grant out there, feels like a real solid trio. I’m sure Badalau gonna have his games and Buchanan looked good but definitely down to how many minutes we can steal with both of them out there.

Also, despite how annoying it is to watch Ogbole’s lack of skill, he’s clearly improved and the pounds he’s shaved definitely has him looking a lot lighter on the feet, was actually happy enough with his performance.

Ultimately I was encouraged. I was slightly skeptical we actually were gonna be super good defensively as it felt none of the players, new and old, have actually played great consistent defense together. But the man to man looked good, rotations were decent, and effort for rebounds even if we need to do a better job on the long ones were definitely encouraging signs. Still a lot to prove and we won’t really get a great diagnosis until 3 weeks from now but I have some hope.

Ogbole on the right block with no defender received a lob that any competent center catches and flushes in one smooth motion,
He barely caught it, then put up a sad excuse for a shot, missing badly.
How many O rebounds did Rider get?
The C position is a serious weakness.

My rapid reaction is that the team outperformed my expectations, but there are some concerns (defensive rebounding, the cold stretch of missing 10 straight shots, so many blown layups, and no scoring from the 5).

Of the 20 score predictions in the Game Prediction thread, not one person had this as a 28 point victory. KnightShift was the closest with a 26 point win. The average score differential was 12.8 points, not including two posters who thought RU would lose the game.

I know the opponent was Rider, but that is factored into the spread and the predictions. Consider me pleasantly surprised of the outcome last night.

Your2,,3 and 4 about Francis , JMike and Dylan were good but it is only one night against a terrible team but they played well. Francis hit that first 3 and gave him confidence and hit 2 more. Second half his handle , driving ability and not forcing anything was nice especially for a junior portal guy.
JMike was steady and solid all night , ran part of the show , hit a couple of open threes , and although Rider’s guards were not good , his harassing full court defense was outstanding all night. He did not bring this last year and the improvement was noticeable
Dylan has expanded his game. His handle has improved and his pump faking and driving for 3 dunks was outstanding. Now there will be shot blockers there against the BIg 10 teams but it was impressive.
Buchanan will be an enigma all year. He has the talent to be a capable wing and can drive but I see inconsistency in his shot. His foul shooting was bad but he spent the whole halftime at the foul line while the team was on layup lines , trying to improve. He will work hard. He is a willing defender.

Again , Rider was bad but they looked worse because that was a very solid defensive effort by the Knights. No blow byes , ton of shot blocking , stating in front of their man , and good close outs. The defense will keep us competitive in most games.
Rebounding was an issue but I thought it was okay in the first half but terrible in the second half. Lino Mark let his man get 3 weak side rebounds and then made it worse by fouling. In the last 5 minutes Rider got a bunch of offensive rebounds that they converted but I do not think that is indicative of the rebounding night. I think we will be fine rebounding with a caveat that the guards must rebound too.

Worst thing was Ogbole at center. He has Not progressed one iota on the offense end. The missed dunks and layups were comically bad . That will be a big issue as neither Fall who did nothing in limited minutes nor Dorsch who I think can be serviceable defensively who blocked a shot has not shown any willingness to be offensive. Ware will not play against BIG 10 opponents. So we have a massive offensive hole st the Center position. Against big teams that is trouble. Against smaller front lines maybe we can get away with playing Dorsch . Ogbole defensively and shot blocking was okay but nothing to praise either.

overall , nice to get a 28 point opening night win and time to get better. I do think the California boys , Nwuil and Mark who had little to no impact , will improve and be contributors even though they didn’t have a good night.

Gotta be concerned that our 2 best players were 6’ tall guards. We cannot play both at the same in the Big 10.
