rating the SEC- DL

year after year, this is where the SEC separates itself from the rest of college football

1. Florida- This is where Fla's recruiting is tough to match. They are good and they are deep

2. Alabama- have to replace Cody, but with guys like Marcel Darius- they will. Won't be as good as 09, but this group will still be good

3. Mississippi- Powe can't read, but he can play DL. Good group returning, hopefully they won't play the Spread any better than in 2009

4. State- McPhee is great and hopefully Carmon lives up to the hype

5. LSU- Drake Nevis is one of the best players in the SEC on defense

6. SC- another reason there is hope Spurrier can pull off winning the East- defense. SC has a solid DL

7. Tennessee- one of the few units Kiffen and Orgeron left in good shape

8. Auburn- got to replace some good players

9. Georgia- switching to a 3 man front and only 1 returning starter

10. Arkansas- reason #1 they won't win the SEC West. They aren't intimidating in the least

11. Kentucky- lost Peters but return most everything else

12. Vandy- lost 2 startersand then another in the Spring to an ACL

it's hard to imagine a better front 4 than Fletcher Cox, Josh Boyd, Pernell McPhee and James Carmon. And before anybody says "How do you know Carmon is any good?", I don't know that. But I know he's what, 6'7", 350 lbs.? Unless he just sucks, he's a hole plugger, maybe not as good as Mt. Cody, but you get my drift.

I realize we shouldn't be top 2 on the list because of the depth of other teams. But we aren't too shabby with Ferguson (who has started plenty), Jones and Bell (plenty of experience), Stigers, Prince, McCardell and McKenzie. That's two full lines that we know can play SEC ball.

I want to agree, but you have to remember that Cox and Boyd are true Sophomores. Yes they were all-everything out of high school, but it's not hard to imagine better DTs than them. They are talented, but raw and have not started an entire SEC season. I think we're going to miss Kyle Love's experience and hole-plugging ability early on as these youngsters get their feet completely under them.

1st team tackles are Boyd and Cox. 2nd team Carmon and Jones. And Juco transfer Jeff Howie will be the 5th DT and may be a factor this year.

Like the previous poster said, we have to remember that Boyd and Cox were 2nd string last year and they are true sophomores. I think people are expecting a little too much. McPhee is a beast at one DE, but the other DE's haven't shown they are SEC caliber. I expect the D-line to be good enough, but I'm not sure it will be great. </p>

Our DL strength is going to be in the overall numbers. We have two
lines full of SEC caliber players. There may not be many all-sec types
(though I think several will be by the time they leave) but having the
ability to keep running fresh legs out all game will pay off in the 4th
quarter. I am expecting to see a huge point diferential for us in the
4th quarter of games this year based solely on the fact that we have so
much depth on the DL.

I have Jackie on my side so I can't be wrong.

there shouldn't be much of a dropoff when our backups come in except when McPhee comes out. Our line could gofrom good to great if Cox and Boyd have made big strides from last year, but it didn't appear that Cox had a great spring. It would be nice if McCardell could play up to his talent and potential. He and Carmon are the wild cards.

I would have to put LSU and UT ahead of us at this point though. Especially LSU.

And yes I can imagine a lot better DT's than 2 true sophs, not even counting what OM has. Go look at UNC's DL

I attended a few spring practices..... didn't get to many great looks at Carmon, but from what I have heard from some inside athletic trainers is this guy is freakishly agile for his size. There were some doubts about Carmon around the team at first, but so far they said he has really shown some skill...... now you never know how that transitions to games.<div>

He is about 330 (down from 370) and is shooting for 320 which shouldn't be hard once two a days hits.

and he says Howie was the best DL in the league last year. Tn & Auburn were on him thick mid season, but everybody seemed to back off after Jeff broke his wrist - missed last 4/5 games of season. Son also said not t o too surprised if State moved him to OG - was even better there.

Hopefully it will be like Jackie's good D's in the 90's where we had a 2-deep that were all starter quality. Hopefully we rotate them and get them all about equal playing time and they are fresh in the 4th quarter.

LSU's DL sucked last year. Absolutely<span style="font-weight: bold;"> no</span> pass rush. And LSU fans are all worried that it's going to be too small this year. Not to mention that all their depth comes from freshmen.

Drake Nevis as an elite player I'll believe when I see.

Seriously, don't get your hopes up on him. He might contribute a little by his senior season. As for Stigers--not impressive at all either. The players to watch at the DE spot across from McPhee will be Ferg, Bell, and McKenzie. Matter of fact, I would not be surprised if McKenzie is a full time starter by the end of the year or next year. His motor is like David Pollack's from UGA several years back, but he is taller, thicker, and still pretty dang quick. Ferguson will probably be the starter headed into the year in the 4-3, but be ready for some 3-4 with Cox, Boyd, McPhee and letting Wright get after the passer some from his LB position.

Here is a snippet from a Chris Wilson interview re: McCardell:

You mentioned there are several players who are competing for the other defensive end spot. Who are those guys?
"We really have three candidates - Sean Ferguson who has played in games for us, Nick Bell is a guy who has played and has experience, and Shane McCardell who hasn't been a player at this point in his career, but from an athletic standpoint and a physical standpoint he might be the most prototypical guy. We just have to get the learning curve up for him in regard to playing at an SEC level. I think, as he continues taking reps, that is going to happen for him."

I've heard Shane may be one of the fastest players on the team, despite being a defensive end. What is his speed?
"I don't have the numbers in front of me, but he is really fast."

Would you say he's one of the fastest players on the football team?
"I would say yes. I'll say this, he's one of the fastest big skill guys that I have ever had a chance to coach. And I've been fortunate to coach a first-rounder and guys who are extremely athletic and he fits in that group. What he's got to do now is become a football player. He's a guy who has a great tools-set. We just have to get it going in the right direction."

Then there is Fletcher Cox who is a tremendous talent. I rank his talent up there with guys like (Ndamukong) Suh, Gerald McCoy. He's that kind of physically talented guy.
