Just trying to pad our ranking* He is a hell of a prospect but has some

work to do in the classroom I believe. Hope he makes it.

Reporting that he is probably a sign and place at Copiah-Lincoln. Still, with Hutch coming in this year, then it should work out nicely as far as staggering talent.

Is there any purpose to the sign and place anymore other than symbolism?

Assuming he cannot qualify (I don't know this at all, but just to clarify the issue), it doesn't hurt us to sign him b/c we weren't going to sign 25 players that could come to campus, but it also doesn't mean anything either. He can still go to whatever JUCO route he wants and in two years, he will have an open commitment.

Is that all correct?

Does it do anything else? Are other 4 year schools limited in the contact they can make with him until he enrolls in JUCO, and is that even a real benefit?

Yes signing and placing has value. Sign and places end up where they signed unless they are released by the school that signed them 99 times out of 100.

If he does go to Co-Lin Glenn Davis (former asst for Jackie) has a good record of feeding juco's into D1 and to MSU and can keep tabs on who else may be searching for his services @ TE

Just noticed that Ronald Cochran is now listed as a grey shirt on 247. Anyone have any details for why?

If it means anything, I would guess it means there is a chance he can get eligible by Christmas but not Fall, and that he is going to go that route rather than the JUCO route.

On sign n place recruits, the JUCO runs interference for the original school. The JUCOs want to keep the pipeline. If the original school drops the player, the recruit is free game.

The biggest value is that the player gets meaningful reps. Instead of just seeing scout team action, he gets two years of playing at comparable talent. The player can also figure out his ideal position. 3-stars emerge as 4-stars, 4-stars as 5-stars. You only have 2 years with them, but if you have a hole to fill, the player can compete for playing time immediately.

I think it's because State could only sign 23 because of the probation. With Pierce they signed 24. I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't the deal all along.

From what I gathered it's all with the 85 scholarship limit and he would put us at 86. Plus he is really, really raw and they would prefer him to bulk up and count towards the scholarship limit next year.

So no official advantage to actually 'signing' is what I was getting at. We could do the same thing without an actual signing and the recruit would be no more or less restricted coming out of JUCO. It's all based on relationships.

Uh, no. He belongs to State until he doesn't qualify. Then State determines where he goes. But he could head to JUCO on his own without signing and State would be one of a number of potential suitors. Any number of JUCOs would love to have a 4-star body - even ones closer to home than Co-Lin.
