a backup plan is for a specific position. So if we missed on CJ Hampton and then immediately offered Brandon Bryant because we needed a safety, then Brandon Bryant would be a backup plan.
That seems distinct to me from deciding we want to allocate one more scholarship to the OL because we missed on a couple of longshots at other positions (namely RB and WR) for whom we'd previously been saving spots, and Rawlings was the next person on our OL board. Reasonable people can differ on this, but it doesn't seem like tortured logic to me. I don't care what Ole Miss or MSU calls Rawlings. He's clearly a good player and will likely do well for whichever school he chooses.
