re: atmosphere and re: lazy fans
Great job by a majority of the fanbase last night--DWS was a nuthouse. Special props to all my nameless friends in Section G-spot too--y'all are some of the best in the entire stadium. This might be undefeated giddiness typing, but I think I have more fun in Section G than I did in the student section in college. That was of course late Kang/Croom timeframe, so this would probably hold true if I had to sit inside a porta-john on top of the East side lightpole. Even the seasoned and weathered State Dawgs that would normally skew towards a more reserved support role get fired up in those corner G seats, so I know the problem isn't our fans, I think it's just expectations/lack of awareness of what their job as a fan is supposed to be.
I know Dan and Scott work hard to motivate our fanbase, and to a certain extent they've had a great deal of success. I also know (partly due to a recent interview with SS) that they pay attention to message boards. I think they should take a look at Notre Dame's Take a Stand campaign for one way of dealing with this problem. Maybe State could even pair it up with some type of get moving / let's get walking campaign to simultaneously tackle Mississippi's embarrassing population obesity %. It is Our State after all, and it's not like it's some dirty little secret--just 2 areas where we could make some strides. Might be a stretch and hard to pull off but I would guess that general health issues like this could be literally (this good, LP?) holding us back.
I partied with South Bend a couple of week's ago for the ND/Michigan game, and it was unreal how effective that campaign was. Granted it was a huge game for them, but the entire--ENTIRE--stadium stood for the whole game. I talked to my golden domer coworkers about this, and then they gave me the background on just how bad it used to be atmosphere wise. Our athletic department is so on top of things I wouldn't be surprised if they are already well aware of such campaigns and have kicked the idea around. So if ND can do it, I know we can because deep down our fans can be great--except for that d-bag that Ozarka ran into in the bathroom. Section G proves it every Saturday.
