Going ahead and working on hotel rooms just in case. What areas to avoid and areas that are ok. I doubt we stay in downtown so where do I need to look?

Don't plan on staying South of I-20. (I actually live just south of 20 but as a tourist if you don't know where you're going you could end up in a very bad area.)<div>
</div><div>Downtown by the Georgia Dome would be alright, particularly if you have kids and want to go to the Aquarium. But try to get a hotel room at or near Centennial Olympic Park. It's walking distance to both the GA Dome and Aquarium. There will be tons of police for the game so as long as you don't stray off the beaten path you'll be fine.</div><div>
</div><div>If you are younger and looking for more nightlife I'd say either Mid-Town or Buckhead. Frankly for me Buckhead is pretty far away andthenightlife has dwindled significantly since the last time MSU was in Atlanta! A large number of the bars have been shut down, but many are still there. Midtown area has a lot of nightlife, restaurants, bars etc... would be easy to get around with cabs. Any Hotel near the North Ave or Arts Center Marta stops will be easy to get to and fromthegame.</div><div>
</div><div>Decatur is a little town just East of Atlanta, but still well within the Perimeter. They are directly connected to the GA Dome by Marta and would be a good way to get tothegame and back. Not sure how many hotels they have. Nice area with some good restaurants.</div>

EAV's advice is sound. I would add the following - if you are not interested in night life but need a place to stay, consider staying outside of ATL in a town with MARTA stop. Take MARTA straight to the Dome, enjoy the game then head back to the station and your hotel. Will be tons of crowd so you should be safe.

Look for the Omni, the Hyatt, The Wyndham, the Sheraton (on Andrew Young Blvd.) or the Peachtree Plaza, all of which are located within walking distance of the Ga Dome, CNN Center, Phillips Arena, etc. These hotels are all in downtown Atlanta, and will be in a safe area. Police will be everywhere, as there is a concert at Phillips Arena and the Peach Bowl going on. You can get rooms at these places for decent rates. If you opt to stay outside of the city, be familiar with the MARTA system. There is a MARTA station that exits right by the Georgia Dome. Driving/Parking on NYE will not be fun, and MARTA will probably be your best option. If you are taking MARTA, you will want to exit at CNN Center/Dome station or the 5 Points station.

is as bad as it used to be, I would advise skipping it completely. That thing is miserable before and after games.

Driving and parking for that game will also be miserable.....which is why I will be staying downtown. It is worth the extra money for a hotel room to avoid the hassle of leaving downtown on NYE.

and you cant beat it for convenience. Wouldnt want to take it late at night with little crowd, but after games, with the crowds, its still fast and safe. Well as safe as anything can be in Atlanta.

Best bet is to stay downtown of course. We did it for the 92 Peach. Getting a good room now for New Years Eve may be a little difficult though.

Looks to be in fairly easy walking distance. Wanted a Hilton room to use up some points but by the time it was a lock for the peach, it was too late to book the hilton downtown.

Realized I'm going to be in Atlanta/Georgia for 7 or 8 days starting on the 5th. I'm not doing the back and forth traveling.

I was just in Atlanta last week. I stayed in the Buckhead area, close to the Lindburgh MARTA station. Free parking at that station and you can take the train right to the Georgia Dome. MARTA is safe, I rode it past midnight several times last week, the only problem I saw is some guy asking for money on the train and a cop immediately came into the car and escorted him off at the next exit. Lots of police presence that I saw last week, so I don;t know how it was in the past, but it was perfectly safe last week...

I already have booked two nights at a hotel 1/2 mile from the Lindburgh center station... See you all there!

Good info, but I have a question. Flying into Atlanta, would an airport hotel be okay? Doesn't MARTA run direct to the airport? Haven't been there in a long time.
I'm looking at a couple of the Marriott's in the airport area - I would appreciate suggestions. Thanks.

I was told that even though it's not the center of the party, we're not a far cab ride or marta ride from the bars. Is this true? It seems to be somewhat in the middle of the bars and dome. Didn't realize it was the ACC team hotel, but oh well. Maybe I'll see Jenn Sterger.

Thanks.

I was able to get a room at the Centennial for $79 / night. No cancellation fees. There were only 2 rooms left.

It's within half mile of the dome.

It is part of the Super 8 chain.

But hey, I've stayed in worse places.

a lot of those downtown hotels are not really considered an EASY walk .... marta sucks ... take cabs when you can find them ... and everyone needs to stay away from underground atlanta
