Who says it needs to be OSLAD? Given the large number of people that follow Iowa wrestling, one would image there are many possibilities. Here are some Iowa and Federal grants that are targeted toward arenas:

  • Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) Grant Program: This program, managed by the Iowa Economic Development Authority, supports the development of multi-purpose attractions and tourism facilities, including potential arena projects, especially when tied to tourism and community revitalization.
  • Iowa Great Places Program: This program provides funds for infrastructure projects that enhance the quality of life in designated "Great Places" communities. Arena development could be considered, depending on the project's alignment with the program's goals and its inclusion in the community's Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
  • Iowa Reinvestment District Program: This program awards funding to projects demonstrating the potential to boost Iowa's economy and support workforce development, including infrastructure projects like sports stadiums.
Federal grants
  • USDA Rural Economic Development Loan & Grant Programs: This program assists rural communities with projects creating jobs and promoting economic growth, potentially including sports and entertainment venues within eligible areas.
If you honestly believe that the state of Iowa was going to give a grant to the University of Iowa for a wrestling facility with all of the other needs in the state, I don't know what to tell you. Besides being political suicide, it does not match the strict criteria. I have no doubt it was looked into and they were told they did not qualify. This goes for your above Federal grant possibility that in no way would be a possibility.

Somebody is getting these grants. I'm not sure why you don't believe Iowa wrestling should.

Because Iowa wrestling is not a priority for the state of Iowa as a whole. Besides having even Iowa wrestling fans split - Republican and Democrat. No matter who sponsored the grant one side would lose their minds. Then you have everyone else who does not give a flying F about Iowa sports. And again - there are far more pressing needs that should be addressed and are eligible for public funds.

My Boy Barta said at the time that the school had zero money for it and would need to be 100% private donations. And too, that was the only way the Regents and Gov would approve it.

Was Bassett sr the one who went on the internet a couple months before the commitment and told Iowa fans something like "this is why my son will never choose your school"? I was kindof confused a couple months later when Bo indeed committed to Iowa

That was a few weeks before his official visit. I was shocked they even took the visit, so I guess I shouldn’t be shocked when his dad helped Sabotage his verbal. Even in the parents interview after he committed, they seemed disappointed and just said he needs decide what he wants. I’m also surprised it is taking him this long to commit to one of the three schools, seeing he knows PSU very well, knows Taylor for years and was On okyst campus at least 3 times for 2-4 days last year. Maybe Nebraska has a chance, but you’d think he would have taken an official by now. I know I’m hoping Bo and his dad are praying for God to give them a big enough throat to eat all that crow when they ask Tom to give them a second chance 😉😉

that is where his parents want him to go.
More and more it looks like dad and mom sabotaged the commitment as Liberty said. They didn't want Bo at Iowa from the start and found the right buttons to push to blow up the deal. Odds are even if he started at Iowa he wasn't finishing here with the helicopters hovering over everything he does.

Don’t you think TNT would pick up on this having been through it with Chittum and others. In recruiting your building a bond with the parents and if it’s not sustainable aren’t you sunk?

Maybe but sometimes the athlete is worth the risk. I don't think the Bassetts are on papa chittum level either, I just think they wanted their boy close to home and/or didn't think Iowa was the best choice for him. They clearly blew the relationship up, not Tom and not Bo.

I agree, but he won't go against the wishes of his adoptive family. They would probably disown him. Wrestling not worth losing your family over, especially when your adopted to begin with. Bo and dad will decide where Melvin and Keegan go to college.
I know you were just spitballing, but a family that would disown one of their own over somethinglike where HE wants to go to college? I'd question the motives of that family.

There would probably be quite a riff at the least. That family takes wrestling much more serious than the rest of us, especially since it’s a big source of income for them.

The start. Me too.

Same here. I like Bo and how he wrestled but the off the mat stuff was just too much Freddy Stroker like for me. Do we really need a video every hour talking about how much you embrace the grind? IMO always a red flag if they feel the need to convince others of there mindset/work ethic etc. If you know, you know... and don't need to advertise it.

Where am I wrong? Maybe disown was a strong word. I would love to be wrong as see Melvin go against the grain and become a hawk.

The whole thing was just egregiously stupid and way too far. Melvin isn't some captive to his "adopted family." They certainly aren't going to disown him if he doesn't go to the same school as Bo. And dear god, Bo and Dad will not decide where Keegan and Melvin will go.

Although it is very likely that they all end up going to the same place, it's because that's what the boys want. Bill has certainly made some mistakes, but this aint that.

He didn’t remove us from his list a day later after Bo committed because he suddenly disliked Iowa. Willie said he wanted to be a hawk I believe. After he took us off his list, he just said family first, which shows he’s following what Bo does. If he wasn’t concerned about what Bill and Bo would think, we would at least still be on his list.
