Just curious but is it a violation of any type if a coach tries to coerce a recruit to attend his alma mater? Sorry if it is a stupid question but I don't follow recruiting all that closely.

...on this subject, I can say that Lance Pogue earned his bachelor and master degrees from Delta State.

in that MSU has the only "coaching" degree between the two larger universities. It's not an accusation and I know it cuts both ways, but I'm sure MSU has a larger percentage of high school coaches as grads. No doubt that you've benefitted from it.<div>
</div><div>As to whether it's a violation, who know? If it was, certainly it would have been an issue before now and not just in Mississippi.</div>

if it's asking a suggestion, how do you prove that something is or isn't coersion? These are coaches, they have to be around and in contact of the players.

The only way I could see it being a violation is if the coach in question gave the player benefits to attend a school. For example, money.

But if I'm a prospect and I ask my coach for advice, and they say MSU or wherever. A coach could suggest I go to Ole Miss, but ultimately, it's my decision.

at least form a moral stand point that he does not wants his kids to attend schools that he does not favor. The Delta State argument does not hold much water because most of the kids that go there had to drop out of UM and are very much fans of UM.

Not directed specifically at Pogue even though I do think he pushes those boys hard toward the Black Bears.

well the term coerce goes beyond a coach being just a coach that is from and has an allegiance himself to a University. My dad could fit into this category as he is a State grad (BA and MS) and has been a 1A or 2A coach for the last 25 years. No special rules apply to him as for coercion but his kids do know of his State fandome through his talking, attire, stickers on his truck, and where he goes to see games 4 times a fall. I don't think that can hurt at all. And I know when I go with him to a game through the pass gate he has to sign the "no extra benefit, etc, etc" thing.

I also think that the fact +!!# has a "pipeline" from SPanola and Madison Central b/c their coaches is probably somewhat similar to the one's we have scattered around the state as well but are not as well known as SPanola has dominated the last decade.

Also as a frame of reference there is one kid from my dads school currently at State, another who is probably going to Ole Miss this next time around, and over the years he coached several that have played at smaller D2 and JUCO schools and some track kids to D1 schollys and the only thing he ever saw that was intriguing was something an Ole Miss coach did that was permissible on an official visit but not an unofficial visit. After asking the next day it was the official visit the coach was on so no big deal. And dad has never been approached with anything untoward but he has never had a super highly ranked kid as a head coach.

...but given the timing, I thought I'd mention where Pogue earned his degrees.

I have friends in the profession and was around a few guysin high school that were recruited by somebig programs. I thinkhigh school coaches havea lotmore influence in these situations than people realize. While they can't force a kid to go to a particular place, they can certainly talk up a particular school, provide coachesfrom a particular school greater access toa player, and can definitely control whether or not a player receives mail from a particular school. Also, it's always been my understanding that when acoach does his part in helping a university secure a top flight recruit thatthere is a little "kick back" for that coach.......if you know what I mean.

If one of their players commits without his approval, it's like selling a house by owner. Maybe, the coach is pissed because he doesn't get a commission on the sale.

Is that SP recruits kids itself. So the fact that OM generally has a lock on SP recruits means that essentially, OM is recruiting these kids when SP is.
