Anybody got a recruiting update?

Supposedly Rosebowl still thinks we have a shot with E. Daniel, T. Johnson, D. Gray, and D. Wilson. Also thinks Dobbs is in play.

How do you cruitniks see us finishing? What are other sites reporting?

Engie, you usually have pretty good info. Also, looking forward to the next Azzuri update.

Hard to say much right now -- since two of the main positions that we're still actively recruiting don't have a position coach currently. Naturally, we aren't going to bring guys in on OVs until their coach is in place -- so it's a holding pattern until the new guys get named. I'm not convinced we're through making coaching moves either -- so we'll see.

IMO I'm pretty happy with where we're at now that we went ahead and sewed up Shumpert... Got to get another QB in the boat. Beyond that, it's just gravy. IF the CB coaching position goes how we're trying to push it, things could get really interesting in the final month...

I agree engie. I think we have a very good and balanced class. The only real need we have is another QB. Get Dobbs or O'Korn and if we can pick up a few best available talented players, lets do it. If we are going to infill with plan C's and D's, hold the schollies for next year. The simple fact of the matter is that almost everyone in this class is going to redshirt, except for the JUCOS, Jones, and maybe Shump. No need to eat schollies on "diamonds in the rough". Although, I would not mind us taking a flyer on the Moore kid from Terry.

No need to eat scholarships but we need to get O'Korn or Dobbs? Are you one of those who is bashing Mullen for running Tyler's offense too? That would top the cake.

I'm ok with not getting a QB this year. Put every bit of confidence in Sandberg and if he doesn't work out, call up every top dual threat in the nation for the 2014 class and say "look, we need you and you'll play SOON"... Lets be honest, we won't get top QB recruits by telling them "you'll play your junior and senior year". It's a blessing in disguise.

We WILL sign another QB along with Sandberg...

and our coaches have told Cord that and he fully understands. NO WAY can you go two classes in a row without bringing in a scholarship QB (the most important position on the team) and Dobbs apparently has first dibbs on the spot if we can flip him. As far as the others we are not the leader for Daniel or Wilson but we have a shot likely moreso with Wilson. Johnson likely depends on who else offers since he has a knee injury and Gray we do lead for but is a grade risk. With the spots we still have left now I'm wondering if we didn't make a mistake by not offering some guys like Derrick Jones, Cameron Fraser and Dylan Bradley.

I think we did. I think we made a mistake on all of them. Those guys are right in our backyard (Jones, Bradley), I'm hoping the coaches see something that I can't. I wouldn't mind us signing Moore from Terry or Garner from Forrest AHS. Maybe we are saving those spots for bigger fish, who knows.

Funny thing is, if we get Sandberg, he probably beats out Prescott. He's a guy you can build your program around and start as a redshirt freshman. That won't go over well with the Prescott loving backup QB is always better folks on this board.

But let's take a look at this, in 2014, you'll have Prescott, Golden and then your freshman QB (assuming Sandberg doesn't make it). It's risky, and you definitely have to sign SOMEBODY in 2014 or you go bust. I guess playing time could be a selling point, though Prescott will be a Jr. A highly rated guy won't care. You might be onto something esplanade91.

HOWEVER, we have not had much luck with signing highly rated QBs from other places, period, until Sandberg. So, unless there's some big time QB in MS/AL/LA with a tie to MSU, I wouldn't chance it. At least sign an O'Korn or Woulard, who's options are limited.

No, I am not. I wish Mullen would call some plays that give Tyler a better chance to be successful. I am in the "I'm sick of seeing slow developing plays" camp. Sometimes, you need to hit a hot receiver and pick up 5 damn yards. I am baffled at our inability to get the TEs involved more. I am baffled at our inability to properly execute a screen pass.

Whether its play calling or Tyler calling an audible, just get it done. The offense was very underwhelming the back half of the schedule. I know we were playing better competition, but Jesus Christ. Its almost like Mullen gave up.

We have a great class shaping up. I still have to shake my head that "great" is a relative thing when 5 of the top 10 recruiting classes in the country are SEC schools. Only Missouri, Kentucky and surprisingly (to me) Arkansas aren't in the top 25. If we recruited Top 15 every year, it would still be practically impossible to work into the upper half of the conference. Even Vandy is starting to consistently crack the Top 15, though that's more of a problem for Mississippi, who has them as their "permanent" East opponent. Unless you have a fluke year, or catch a rising genius coach who hasn't been discovered yet, it's basically impossible these days to get to Georgia if you aren't Bama, LSU, Ga, Florida, ATM, or Auburn. The rest of us have to hope those guys cannibalize themselves and we get in through the back door.

A good amount of people on here are convinced Mullen and a drop-back passer will never work (I tend to agree), and I feel like signing another (not to mention smaller and probably less tough) Russell-esk QB is just going to spark more controversy. It's obvious this staff puts enormous weight on seniority, and hypothetically we get the next Manziel he wouldn't beat out a junior or senior Prescott, and I think most intelligent recruits realize that.

It's risky, but we KNOW Prescott can QB. We don't know how well, but he can. Say he gets hurt, Goldon is a decent backup and is of the same mold. If he sucks or gets hurt, and for some reason we still believe we're in the game or need to finish the season, O'Korn isn't going to save us. Maybe a 4* HIGHLY recruited dual thread freshman might though. If we're at that point in a game/season, it won't matter anyway though.

I don't want another drop-back passer. I'd rather hold out for some of the big offensive recruits who will actually one day contribute, and if the staff finds out we have one more spot open days before signing go ahead and grab a QB. Sure.

Edited to add that I believe Mullen's inability to snag a big QB recruit is because of the lack of identity and establishment, the same as how he didn't nail down a solid "blue chip" until a few years in at any position. He's been here and he's been on kids' TV's the past couple years and the talking heads have been saying how he turned our offense around... Whether they were consciously listening it doesn't matter.

Have you people forgotten Prescott was recruited by Saban, Myles and TCU to name a few. I think Prescott didn't lose a game until his sophomore year of high school and his win percentage through high school was as high as his numbers. But you guys are genius and know more than some of the best coaches in the country including Mullen and Saban, Arguably one of the best coaches ever. And he stayed loyal to his commitment and signed with Miss State another feather in his quality guy cap. You guys surely know more than these coaches. However on this backup is better board. Well sometimes they are. But stick with the 5 interceptions in a bowl game. Like Dr. Phil says how's that working for you?

I follow recruiting fairly closely...

and I never heard one iota interest of Saban with respect to Prescott. Yes, TCU wanted him and Miles at LSU came in late but he was never on Saban's radar. He doesn't even fit the style of QB Saban wants.
