Whopping total of two hits tonight in a 2-1 loss. While we leave four good young hitters at Louisville in AAA.
Really? Law pitched Tuesday night. So the Reds call up Lively and Herget and they're showing Law as the starter today? Why'd they call up Lively again? Pretty sure he missed a start in Louisville to come up. Checking Louisville's Box Scores, he hasn't pitched in over a week. He should be fresh.
Right? They must really want this to be a bullpen game. If that's what they were going to do, why didn't they cut Newman loose and Call up McClain or CES? Now they're just wasting roster spots.Really? Law pitched Tuesday night.
Going to need a pitcher like Abbott right now in that 5th spot more than anything else. I hate this 'Opener' approach TB started awhile back taxing the bullpen every 5th game. Thought this was supposed to be Lively's spot in the rotation. Did I miss something on him or Herget why that did not start today? Not even showing upcoming starts on MLB Probable pitchers. I get removing Cessa from the rotation for someone better but he would have been beneficial eating innings in long relief so they cut him altogether.Right? They must really want this to be a bullpen game. If that's what they were going to do, why didn't they cut Newman loose and Call up McClain or CES? Now they're just wasting roster spots.
Agree, the game wasn't lost because of Hunter Greene. Inconsistent offense production going up against the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander. Doubt anyone seriously expected this Reds team to win last night.Greene had to be near perfect. He wasn't. No shame in that. Still not efficient (100+ pitches in 5.1 innings) as well.
Head scratcher for me too. Hate to be dense but I don't get it.So they put Law out there to face the first four batters then bring in Lively. WT actual F is that about? Law threw 20 pitches.
Newman had the clutch 2-out, 2-run base hit in the first though.Right? They must really want this to be a bullpen game. If that's what they were going to do, why didn't they cut Newman loose and Call up McClain or CES? Now they're just wasting roster spots.
Was this maybe a stop gap to get Abbott a couple more starts in AAA before sliding him into the rotation?Lively was good for 3 innings without a run but this is no depth whatsoever at the back end of the rotation assuming Ben starts next time. With 4-5 spots in shambles, Stout, Williamson & Abbott all in Triple A with only Abbott showing consistency and cutting Cessa, I don't know where the hell they go to get innings going forward. Bullpen going to be taxed regardless today.
Been like that all season so far.Weird team to drop the series to the White Sox but beat a potent Mets offense. In the end, I'll take it. 5-0 shutout!
Hope that's the end result with these recent moves. Just not a fan of this opener strategy. Glad the gamble paid off today and it's worth it short term for Abbott. Was this maybe a stop gap to get Abbott a couple more starts in AAA before sliding him into the rotation?
Absolutely, I'll revise my stance on him earlier after his Paul O'Neill impression with that throw nailing the runner at home was right on the money.Wow! Hell of a throw by Ramos to nail Alvarez at the plate. Also had a huge walk to keep the rally alive in the first.
It's interesting to think about the chances of it happening. Would need to get Abbott, CES, Hopkins, EDLC & McLain up here in time, have an India level impact of 2021 who quickly adjusted from the rookie slump early on. I think realistically they could have a shot in 2024 with the expanded postseason format. All depends on how much experience the prospects in Louisville get in MLB this year to have enough film to adjust over the offseason. Heard an analyst say this week on MLB Network with so many teams right now looking like they could have a shot at the postseason, fewer teams will be looking to sell. Still a lot of baseball to play until the deadline and know for sure who is real or not by then.Been like that all season so far.
Dumb question. The Pirates have lost 9 of 10, they are coming back to earth. The Brewers haven't done much themselves to make up any ground, the Cardinals are sucking this year and The Reds are only 4.5 games back. If this trend continues for the next 2-3 weeks, the Reds have a decent road trip and are still within reasonable striking distance when June rolls around, would that merit making a few moves to bolster the team, like say, calling up the big 3, and maybe see if they can get themselves into the wildcard hunt?
OK slap me, that's stinkin' thinkin' I know, this is the Reds we're talking about.
Look for Brewers to eventually take control of the CD. Cubs/Cards will challenge although Cards have dug themselves a big hole. Reds will be a 72-75 win team. They don't have depth, would take career years from SEVERAL guys to do much better. That and only 3 starting pitchers and a reluctant FO to fix the team will be the death knell(Big 3 pitching woes may sink them anyway). Reds need to dump vets, bring in rookies by mid-June but I have doubts of them doing much of anything.Hope that's the end result with these recent moves. Just not a fan of this opener strategy. Chicago may find themselves right in the mix of it all before it is said and done. It's a FO that isn't afraid to spend money right after a short fire sale in 2021. It's laughable to watch St. Louis at the bottom after mocking us for years. Spent all that money on Contreras and removed from catcher. What a joke. Especially their starting rotation too. Could be the Brewers division to win this year but won't go far in the playoffs. It's another organization that doesn't like to spend money and will add marginal pieces like Moustakas to try and win. Just never any success in October. Probably going to lose Burnes. He wasn't happy with the FO to begin with after the fallout from his arbitration case and hasn't looked as dominant to start this year.Look for Brewers to eventually take control of the CD. It's the Reds we're talking about so probably not. Use it as an excuse to push Senzel back to CF, maybe give Barrero a shot before figuring what they're going to do with him. Replace the roster spot with another infielder to the crowded equation with Reynolds, Alejo Lopez or Will Benson if they choose an OF. That's how this FO rolls.Smoke and mirrors win, baseball's a funny game. Nice win and nice effort from the BP. Glad to see Steer go yard, he's about the only power guy in the lineup.
If Freidl goes on the IL do they finally call up Hopkins?
I don't think this had anything to do with Abbott. You don't just waive a starting pitcher in Cessa and not have some kind of plan in place unless you are the Reds. It worked in their favor today but expecting 6 innings of relief every 5th day out of the bullpen will have them spent by early June. I don't know why Lively did not start the game. He goes 5-6 innings every game in Louisville with 48 pitches when Bell yanked him. That's not going to work going forward. Was this maybe a stop gap to get Abbott a couple more starts in AAA before sliding him into the rotation?
Reds in early 1960s called up Pete Rose from AA at age 21-22 and gave him 2B job. This FO would still have Rose in High A at age 82.Marlins calling up top prospect from AA Eury Perez before series vs Cincinnati. 20 years old, youngest pitcher in franchise history. We have 26 year olds yet to debut. That's not going to go over well Reds Country. Way to smear it in our faces.
Are they still trying to retain these guys another year keeping them down? What is the magical date now with the new CBA? I was trying to figure this out the other day but failed to find anything concrete. The Cubs waited until April 15th or so in the 2015 season for Kris Bryant. Well past that date now. At some point you also have to consider the prospects kept down in AA, A Ball that need to be moved up. Marte needs to be in Louisville before the year ends. I think Lyon Richardson should already be there having to protect him in the Rule 5 last year. Take a bit of a chance on a former college player like Dunn showing he's killing it for Dayton, move him to Chattanooga so he's one step closer to helping this team sooner.Reds in early 1960s called up Pete Rose from AA at age 21-22 and gave him 2B job. Other than the Rangers series with a sweep, this is the only unexpected series of the year the Reds have won. Got lucky Scherzer missed his Tuesday start, Lindor & Marte batting under .230. They win the Opening Series at home to Pittsburgh which you should, then get swept in 4 by them. Won the series against the garbage A's team on the road. Every other series has been a loss. This team isn't built to win this year, unlikely next year and hope they can contend in 2025. Opener strategy is not sustainable. The schedule is only going to get tougher with the Yankees this month, a series vs the Cubs at Wrigley and the Red Sox at Fenway to close out the month. Meanwhile FO should be embarrassed keeping down EDLC, CES, Hopkins, Abbott & McLain.Been like that all season so far.

Im not talking about making trades for half year rentals at the trade deadline. I’m talking about working with what they have or if they do trade, it’s for somebody experienced that they can control for a couple of years, like a decent starter. It would just be interesting to see if they could just experiment with lineups that include the big 3 and Abbott and see if they can contend in a weak division. The big 3 all seem to have that power that’s lacking in the current lineup.Hope that's the end result with these recent moves. Just not a fan of this opener strategy. Didn't say you were. I know what you're talking about and wasn't suggesting you said make a trade when Cincinnati has help in the form of the Big 3 already within the organization. Just added what I heard an analyst say on how wide open it is right now for all teams to your point about the Reds being in contention and that's what the analyst had to say about the field being so open as of today. The league would be less willing to move parts making it hard across MLB to grab a spot with everyone thinking they are contenders right now. Relevant information how volatile the trade market will be or not that would effect the Reds positioning with more mid-level/bottom feeders thinking they have a 'shot' at the postseason with more teams in the picture. Too much baseball to be played between now and the deadline.Im not talking about making trades for half year rentals at the trade deadline.
