Definitely a serious injury has impacted his production especially with power. I read a lot about the Reds extending players and his name often comes up for obvious reasons. He will need to prove to be healthy and productive again before signing him to a long term extension.
After today's pathetic performance it really shouldn't be that hard. There is room on this team for the deserving players that are ready so long as the FO has the gumption to pull it off. Infield, LF and the bullpen are the only areas with depth. Players like Fairchild, carry 2 catchers instead of 3, trade Myers, ditch Newman, Weaver. Neither Myers or Ramos are apart of the long term future. Cessa doesn't belong in the rotation but in the bullpen however they don't have enough ready arms in the minors to pull off replacing both Weaver & Cessa at the back end of the rotation while needing to skip starts to rest the Big 3.
How is Barrero worth keeping more over Senzel? Jose hasn't done a damn thing in his career. We're now in that 6th week. It's time to **** or get off the pot making room for McLain. Not saying you're wrong about Senzel but be fair and objective to both. Jose hasn't even produced a fraction of the little Senzel has done and that's a damn problem. It's not worth keep throwing him out there waiting for the inevitable that won't happen. No wonder this franchise is in the shape it is in. The Reds won't be better off until they have a full outfield like they did in 2021 and move past both of the overall disappointments in Barrero & Senzel.
I don't expect a finished product from either at this stage in their career at the MLB level without growing pains along the way in the development process. That would be unrealistic. They still need to improve like any young pitcher and will. Not worried about either long term and each of these Big 3 are going to have clunkers. Greene with his 1.02 ERA in the 2nd half last year proves as much that he has it and glad the FO recognizes it. That's all that matters.
Finally a really bad outing although the bullpen gave up 6 earned runs as well. An offense that can score 18 runs a game is hopefully coming soon.
Barrero has higher worth than Senzel because of his age, 25 vs 28, and the important positions he plays SS/CF. Those are key position to building any winner. That's not to say it's open ended, Barrero needs to reach his enormous potential NOW. As for Senzel, he was a Top 5 pick and being so he should be an All Star, a 25-30 HR guy with 80+ RBIs and a .280+ BA. He's not close to that and never will be. But the FO will stubbornly hold onto to him until FA because to dump him now would admit they failed in his eval/development.
Senzel a 25-30 HR guy? Expecting him to be a .310+ avg plus here, sure I agree. However his highest HR/RBI marks at any level was in 2017 with 14 HR & 65 RBIs. Barrero was also a Top 100 prospect and in the futures game with his career high in HR/RBI 19 HR & 66 RBIs in 2021 with the Lookouts & Bats.
It's not too much to expect a Top 5 pick to be a 25-30 HR guy(it needs to dawn on this FO that GABP is a tiny, bandbox park...team needs HR hitters, not a bunch of singles guys). And that Senzel played CF doesn't mean he was good at. He continually took poor angles on balls, missed cutoff men and threw to wrong bases. There's a reason he no longer plays CF. Pickler did an extremely poor job preparing him but OF D has been a problem for several years under Pickler.
You have to realize that not every Top 5 pick is going to fit the same mold and be a power hitter just because that's where a team selects them. One of the greatest Reds of all-time, Barry Larkin a 4th overall pick hit 20 or more home runs only twice in his career. Derek Jeter 3 years of 20 or more home runs. Brandon Phillips made the All-Star team with 18 home runs 3 times and ranked 13 in MVP votes with 18 for a 4th time. BP in 2010 as an AS 18 HR & 59 RBIs. The park doesn't make you a power hitter all of a sudden if that is not your game already. As I've previously stated in the last post, Barrero showed more power in 2021 with 19 HR & 66 RBIs with ZERO home runs at Great American Ballpark. Enrique Bradfield will be another one in this upcoming MLB Draft most likely a 1st Rounder that will not hit for those kind of power numbers.
Really have no doubt you're right, this FO will sink or swim with Senzel. He and his .250 BA is already taking up ABs from younger guys. Maybe the Reds will trade MM/CES for some 35 y/o OF type.

I don’t understand keeping either Senzel or Barerro past this season. Maybe Senzel can put together a decent half season to merit a prospect or two at the trade deadline. I just don’t see where there’s room. Would be a bad look to move India being a clubhouse and fan favorite as well as a team leader. What happens to Steer, when EDLC, McClain and CES all arrive? And Marte is nipping at some heels to get up there as well. I think Fraley is earning a spot here longer term as well.
I agree on both Barrero and Senzel needing to move on and don't think either will be satisfied with a super utility role here. Also agree it would be foolish to move the best hitter in the lineup and a great leader like India. Need to give him a break. Don't understand why people want him gone but give chance after chance to Barrero who has done practically nothing. All I'm saying if you are going to be critical of certain players, be fair in your criticism to the other who is killing this team as well. The Reds are not in this position because of one draft pick in Senzel being a bust. Cincinnati will not get any decent prospects for those 2, that ship has sailed. If there's a reason you don't want a certain player on your team, don't you think the rest of the front offices across MLB are smart enough to figure out the same thing too?
The Reds have to call them up at some point to start building towards .500. I don't know about you but 80% production of the "Big 3" would be a welcomed sight on this Cincinnati team going on the assumption most players numbers are going to drop going from AAA to MLB playing against the best of the best. Outside of India/Friedl not even getting 50% from the majority of the roster. So call them up and stop delaying the future because Cincinnati sure is playing a lot of guys who don't belong in the Majors period!

I'm stunned they're not at least keeping him in the bullpen. Some team will scoop him up in the role he had coming here and like he had in New York, middle relief with occasional spot starts and do well. I don't like this move especially with the timing of Sanmartin going down. Easy to clown him for some bad games but by and large he was decent for the Reds. Herget was good in his time earlier this season. Lively has pitched only 1 game in MLB since 2018. Meanwhile Abbott still in AAA, doesn't need to be there much longer at his pace.
Nobody told them the NL has the DH now.
