Fact is, I’d completely forgotten all about him repping Arkansas and that’s why I asked. And here you are still talking about it and insisting I just must care about is as much as you.

I just don’t because I’m me and you are why you are.

Isn't this considered extreme underacheiving since he was the #3 overall pick? Generally, when you have a #3 pick that player you selected is expected to come in and not only be a starter, but be one of if not THE lead contributor. Did the Rockets misevaluate him? Why was he selected so high?

Idk man, there are a ton of topics that get beat to death on here. I don't think you can make that blanket statement. I mean, I guess you can make it. Just doesn't make it the truth.

Reed Sheppard could have been a great college player but he was waaayyy overrated for the nba. Reed exploded at Kentucky because he had been raised by two all time kentucky greats. Being a Kentucky great himself is what reed had been raised to do. He is a hit or miss nba long term success but the college game was where he would have become a legend. Out of high school he was way underrated and as an nba prospect there was a severe over correction that made him a lottery pick. He was good in college. His game really tailed off in January and should have tipped off nba teams to factor playing at the hometown school with his pedigree from UK. I don’t know if there is any team that’s gonna motivate him like Kentucky. I don’t even think the money motivates him. Chasing money isn’t going to fulfill a person. He had tons of money waiting had he returned. I wish he played 3 years at Kentucky. People say it’s all about the second contract and he isn’t on pace to become a max earner.

Feelings. By that I mean it’s my feeling that you (seemingly) and others are very in touch with your feelings and Reed hurt them.

I’d forgot about it and I didn’t like it, but I managed to forget all about it. It’s ok to be different.

Maybe he wanted to show support to the guy that helped him be set for life and only ever have to play a game to make money. Maybe.

It really has nothing to do with feelings. Here is a kid who was bred to become a college legend. A Bobby Hurley or latener type. The media loved him, loved his story, loved that he was this legacy player representing both men’s and women’s program. Instead reed is a footnote. My feelings aren’t hurt because right now we have 3 hometown guys who can snag that legend status. Could have been 4 with reed leading the way. I’ll keep chiming in on reed because I think he made a bad personal decision.

Reed Sheppard was the 3rd pick in part due to potential. When I watch nba reed he looks far less engaged, plays with far less passion than he did at UK. Maybe he didn’t want the legend pressure and he was scared of the season being a flash in the pan. He needed to be at Kentucky or in colleges 3 years due to maturity. That’s the type of player he was when he came in. With cal at most a 2 year player. That’s an honest assessment. Not that he was rated in the 40s or a 3 pick. It’s was somewhere in the middle and with NIL (that man was made to be an NIL machine) a 3 year guy no doubt.

none of it made sense. His recruit status nor his draft status. If the league sees a player is subpar and was picked top 3 they have a way of weeding those guys out. He was set to make big money at UK, probably sign with Nike in college. Like cal always said. Kentucky isn’t for everyone. How many reed sheppards have we had? Guys who took the money and struggled because they weren’t ready? Reed needed to be getting strong in the weight room instead of playing 82 games. We ll. See how it all pans out

Many here feel that he made a bad financial decision. Remember that this decision was made with the view that the House decision would curb the Wild West NIL era. The fact that it hasn’t is hindsight and is always 20/20.. Given the view at the time and the realization that he was #3 makes it a correct financial decision in my opinion.

I think it was too. The salary for a top 3 pick…he wasn’t going to get that here. nowhere near it. His contract is like 42 million over 4 years. With the first 2 guaranteed and the last two as a club option.

And i think it’s very unlikely for a team to give up on a top 3 pick after 2 or 3 seasons. If he stays 4 years in college and ends up overseas and never playing in the nba i doubt he makes close to 42 million over his life time.

That was WAYYYY too much to risk imo.

If he had been bottom half or late first or worse? Yeah. totally different. But if i’m in his shoes I can’t say i’m passing up 40+ million over 4 to come back and play another season or 2 or 3 for even my college team.

I’m just pissed that he supported our opponent on game day. And i’m a sore loser so us losing to them makes it that much worse.

where are you getting this from? “Many”? I think if you said “A very small percentage of people”. I’ve not seen anything supporting your claim about people thinking he made a bad financial choice. I would say most people understand why he did it and are annoyed he wore an Arkansas shirt like an idiot.

It's going to be tough for Reed in the next few seasons as it seems like teams are moving away from small guards. Many teams are rolling out jumbo sized backcourts without a true PG.

If he can take care of the basketball, get a few assists, and be efficient from 3, there will always be a spot for him in the top 7 of a rotation. Maybe he gets a moment like McConnell had in the playoffs.

Also, Reed is just 21 years old. Van Vleet and Brunson, two other starting small guards, really didn't turn the corner until they were 23 or 24.

As it stands now, he is up to almost 45% from 3 and is averaging double figures in limited minutes. He's trending up after a slow start.
