Now that their entire tenure is over, who would you rather have playing QB for State if you had a choice?

I know Tyler holds passing records, but I am going with Relf 100%.

Just curious how the board feels.

nothing against russell, but its easily relf by a myle*

relf is a poor man's cam newton and a poor man's cam newton is still pretty damn good. not the best passer, but he had some lean to him.

Depends on who our coach is. With Mullen, Relf all day everyday. With Nick Saban, I would choose Russell.

Relf under Mullen...Relf's 2010 production is the base of what I expect going forward...

Why does everyone think Russell would be successful at bama when he's never been a drop back passer? Just curious bc his whole career he was a shotgun qb

I can't get why anyone would think that a QB could be successful at Bama.

Russell. Relf 2011 averages out the grade. Relf 2010 had a backfield of Ballard, Perkins 1.0, and Conner. Relf 2010 had an O-Line of... not Clausell 1.0 and Siddoway 1.0.

Well, the fact he wouldn't have beat AJ for the starting job there for one thing. And for the record, he WAS a successful QB at MSU.

Relf.

Relf fit better in what we were trying to do. No knock on Russell - it's just a perfect example of how important it is to recruit to fit your system. Russell had the golden arm coming in and Relf was thowing completions to the Porto-Johns in his early spring pratices.

Relf helped keep defenses honest with his legs. Russell could never figure out how to get over the top of defenses with his arm. Part of that was play calling. Part of that was a direct result of the player. Part of that is it's easier to make a defese respect the threat of 4 yard runs the QB than it is for QB to connect deep.

And on the team around him. Russell in '98 and '99 could completely change that team. Relf is probably worse than Madkin if he was put into that situation.

I'd probably pick Russell for most of MSU's history.

It's not about shotgun versus dropback, that can easily be handled with coaching and practice. The difference is a pocket passer / system QB versus a two-way / "create something" QB. Russell would have done well under Saban's system but we forced that square peg into a round hole and had him trying to run between the tackles when he never, ever looked comfortable doing it. Russell was the best QB Mullen could get at the time but he didn't fit the system and our coaches knew that. We certainly didn't make much effort to adjust to his style of play.

Russell

I love Relf for being the bear killer, but I would take Russell. People remember Relf for 2010, but we had a great OLine and RB to help him. Put 2012 version of Tyler with that team and I think we are better. I can't get the 2011 UAB game out of my mind… Losing 0-3 an dead with Relf. Russell comes in, leads us to 3 TDs and saves us from embarrassment.

Bama has 5-6 Russells on their roster at any given time, so his chance of being successful at Bama would have been roughly 20%.
