Relf will be the starter.

I know it was just one scrimmage, but saying Russell just struggled doesn't do it justice. He really looked awful. Relf on the other hand looked much improved, especially the passing.

One thing that will help is the fact Bumphis and Heavens clean up just about everything that is within reach. They are gonna be a great slot tandem. I also noticed that when the play was the option draw, Relf never kept it. He always handed it off. So I think with regards to the running game, actually allowing Relf to keep it during the game situations will open up the middle on the option draw. I'm guessing he was told to hand it off every time in that situation.

To be honest, I dont really know what to make of what I saw tonight. On the surface Russell looked horriable but the odds were really stacked against him today. Still.... I think Relf will be the man.

Relf did look better, but had 4 of the 5 OL starters this year in front of him. Russell didn't look as bad as some will say, because the second string OL in front of him wasn't blocking anything. Russell never had the luxury of a pocket and the TD pass he through(called back) was to his third read. Ballard and Conner looked good running the ball, though Conner runs upright too much and is going to star in 'Jacked up' if that continues into the regular season. My main concerns are the fact that Relf cannot hit an out pattern and the second string OL needs major work.

I saw him miss some wide open throws with not much pressure. Russell looked really bad today in my opinion, which was a huge disappointment.

the fact that he couldn't step into his passes due to his linemen being pushed back into him, then I'm not sure what you were looking at. I'm not trying to get into a pissing match, but this is also alluded to by Veazey in the Clarion Ledger blog talking about how much better blocking Relf had to work with.

Russell did not look awful. I didn't think he played very well, but he wasn't just plain awful. It would have helped if the white team tried to establish a run game. That being said, it is very obvious Relf has won the job at this point. Relf's passing has improved greatly.

He was in the shotgun and before he had time to make a read there was someone in his face. Next to every throw he had was off his back foot... It was basically the 2nd team OL vs the 1st team DL, and that just wasn't a good matchup from the get go.<div>
</div><div>Believe me, I believe Relf is the starter and Russell has work to do, but I don't believe he's nearly as bad as we saw today.</div>

we would have had to hear about Ole Miss being in the Capital One Bowl all year. I still would have liked to have had that win.

I wanted that upset so bad and we probably have a different outcome the next three games instead of getting drummed at home like we did by LSU, UH, GT, and the refs

I like Relf; I liked him last season, but I think Mullen is looking for a quarterback beyond just servicable. I think he's still hoping that TR can be that man. In SEC football, you've got to make the plays and you've got to make them now. Otherwise, you lose.

I only had the chance to see the first half and I didn't "key in" on aspect in particular. But, I did see Relf go through at least a 2-3 receiver progression before deciding to hit his safety valve option which was the RB leaking out from the flat. The only way I knew that is what happened is because he shuffled his stance to the direction of 2-3 receivers before ultimately turning to RB in the flat. To me, that was the single most indicative play that showed Relf's improvement as a QB. Previously I thought he was of the Money Mike persuasion of "no one's open? 17 it, I'm going DEEP!" Either that, or he would be inclined to tuck it and run if his 1st receiver was not open.

As another poster already noted, Relf rarely took the ball himself on the RB dive option play. I'd say 9 out of 10 times he handed it off instead of keeping it and we all saw how awesome he was last year when he kept it and went around the end. I think the defense new this and played accordingly which most likely significantly diminished our RB production. On some of those plays, if he would have kept it and gone around the end he would have been on his way to a 60 yard TD scamper untouched.

All in all, I was extremely pumped about Relf's performance. Russell on the other hand.....not so much. He did damn near the exact opposite of Relf. From what I saw, he eye-balled his primary receiver to the point that the other WRs might as well have not even run routes. I think he will be fine in time, but it's no question who our starting QB will be next year.

It was definitely awesome though having 2 of the tallest players on offense being our QBs... extremely refreshing.

Relf was intentionally not blitzed/pressured but Russell was. Per conversations I had with some staff...

he went deep a lot when routes were wide open underneath. I think he was trying a little too hard. He will be fine by the first game but if yesterday is our judge, he should not touch the field.

As someone behind me said during the spring game, it's nice to not have our QB crowhop to throw the ball 30 yds.
