Rex Ryan was throwing a fit about Sanchez being hit on the running play.

My question: When does it become a penalty?

If I'm a DC I would tell my guys to hit the QB on every play, running or passing. As often as teams run play action passes, they should be fair game. Had the defensive player gone for the running back and Sanchez still had the ball, we'd be talking about how great of a play action sell it was.

If it's excessive. As in picking him up and slamming him to the ground or something like that.

I wouldn't tell my defense to hit the QB on a running play because you can only do it once or twice before you start getting penalized in the NFL. The NFL is always going to protect the QB.

I didn't see anything wrong with the hit on that play. There was a real possibility that Sanchez still had the ball. And of course, I don't mean they should be hit 30 seconds after throwing the ball. But if it is a running play and there are only 4 or 5 steps taken before the hit, I don't think it would should be a penalty.

But, you are right...the NFL has shown that the QB's are practically off limits. Except on interception returns if your name is Kurt Warner. Then you get knocked into next Tuesday.
