As we all know, the forthcoming storm is impacting football all over the place. In fact if I understood the sports report tonight, UVa has moved its HOME game to Nashville! How wild is that????

On the local scene, the Shenandoah will be playing games as early as Wednesday in one case, with others on Thursday and maybe some that have not been moved yet. But whenever they get played, it will be an interesting assortment as there could be as many as four toss-ups in a five- game set. Here is the line-up:

Riverheads at East Rockingham: Everyone is talking about it and it will be a shame if weather keeps this game from being what it could and should be, but that will of course be no one's fault if it happens. Will this be the year the Eagles finally solve RHS or is this really an even better Gladiator team this year, one that will tame the Eagles for a ninth straight time? My money is of course on the Big Red, since they have a ton of weapons and playing on the road seldom fazes them. But I can certainly understand why a lot of folks will pick the home team in this one.

Page County at Stuarts Draft: This one could be quite interesting. The Panthers have started out 2-0, whereas the Cougars have suffered two straight demoralizing losses after barely beating what is apparently not a very strong Waynesboro team. If Page is going to make its move this year and pick up a quality win over a (probably) favored team, this could be the one. I will still go with the Draft officially but will not be surprised if I am wrong.

Lee High at Buffalo Gap: Both teams will be facing hardship in this one. The Leemen are likely to be without their starting quarterback and the Bison will be operating on a short week, since they only played Luray Monday night. Regardless, this one is a pure toss-up and I will go with the home team, only because I expect the usual 4-5 TD performance from Rivenburg and I don't think the Leemen will be able to keep pace. On a decent field, this could be a 40-35 kind of game.

Luray at Stonewall: The Dogs will of course also have a short turnaround, but against the Generals it will not matter. The only game on the docket that will have a predetermined winner.

Fort Defiance at Wilson: This non-district clash will feature two teams who have exceeded expectations so far. It will almost be a shame to see one of them have its bubble burst. The points the Hornets have put up, even if the competition has been weak, has to give them the edge, but the Fort defense might be able to slow them down and make it a battle in the trenches that could go either way.

Best wishes to one and all for safe travels and as entertaining a game as the weather will allow.

Just to get my .02 in here real quick.

RH travels to play a very good ER squad. The Red team should still win 35-21. ER can score for sure but I don’t think they have played a D quite as good so far. As for RH I still don’t think ER can stop the running game.

Page and Draft could be a slobber knocker but I think Page finally has just enough playmakers to take the W. Won’t be real high scoring, 21-8 or some such score.

Lee visiting the Gap could make for a high scoring affair. Gap has struggled against PM and Luray in back to back weeks and both are primarily running teams. With the Lee QB in question look to see a ton of more of the same thing. That said, I am not sure if Lee can stop Rivenburg so I will say Gap 49-41. Could just as easy be the reverse but I like a power running team versus a spread team running.

Luray will roll and work on some fundamentals along with seeing about their depth. Enough said.

Now to the second most interesting game this week in my opinion. I think Fort has some very solid pieces that will bear fruit long term but Wilson should put more playmakers on the field and run away with this one. I have Wilson big, 35-13.

Good luck and safe travels to all this week.

Max Preps goes back to 2004

Page County from 2004-2017 had two wins against Augusta County School.

20-15 over Wilson Memorial in 2004.
14-7 over Buffalo Gap in 2013.

That is crazy to think about.

Congrats to them for finally etching another win against an Augusta Count Rival.

Page is now 3-0

They haven’t won more than 5 games in I have no idea how many years. They have hit the 4 win mark once since 2004, which was in 2005.

Here’s to hoping they can keep some momentum going!

1995 Page won 5 games
1993 Page won was 7-4 and lost 1st rd home game vs Strasburg

Page vs Riverheads all time 0-21, yearly since 1999 + 1981 & 1982
Page vs Fort 0-2; only played in 1965 & 1069, both Indian wins
Page v Wilson all time 3-19, the 3 wins were in 1999, 2001, & 2004
Page vs Draft all time 6-18; Last win last night , prior 1988 & 1989
Page vs Gap all time: 7-24; Last win in 2013, last win prior was 1992

Good for them. While it still only be a 4 win season this year, getting over that 3 win hump is helpful for growth.

I'll bet that 1069 game with Fort was a festive affair! Wonder what the uniforms were like back then and who knows, the cheerleaders might have even shown some ankle. Do you suppose they threw the losing team to the lions?

Thanks for this info. and my chuckle of the day.

I think both teams last night didn't look very good. A lot of unforced mistakes from SD that could have been from wet conditions with fumbles and bad snaps, and Page only had 22 players. But as unimpressed as I was with both, for 22 kids Page toughness impressed me. Both teams may struggle the rest of the season, but neither quit.

Hopefully they both can grow as the season goes on and in the future.

Good luck to the rest of teams this evening and Monday

Well I would like to request a side of slaw with my crow.

That is a complete football team I witnessed in Elkton. The Red team is solid and were outplayed across the board. It is probably one of the top three defensive performances I can remember against a Casto coached team. The player that stands out to me is #50, that young man was in the backfield at the mesh point more times than I would like to recall. Great win for East Rock and nothing would make me happier than to see them representing in Salem.

On a side note, it’s not often that we come away with tails tucked but that was a decent one right there.

East Rock's defense is making great strides. The offense hasn't showed its hand yet, if you can believe it. There are no excuses for Riverheads. They just got whipped. East Rock's D-line was bigger than the Riverheads O-line. That hasn't stopped Riverheads in the past but in this game I saw missed blocking assignments, untypical of a Casto offense. Congrats to East Rock!

I assume that East Rock and Luray are scheduled to play this year. That game will reveal a lot about ER and their defense. Luray is physical, as they usually are. Stopping a one dimensional team is one thing (and I know RH is very good on the ground). Still not sold they can stop a balanced attack. But they are definitely good...especially in a year in which HS football seems to be down overall.

Riverheads is better this year than last I don’t see Luray having a chance against east rock time will tell on what happens I think Riverheads May have thought to much of themselves and coach will get them to where they need be

I don’t think Luray will beat East Rock. Just think it will show if their defense can adapt against a physical team.

Riverheads is just as physical as Luray. Their line play is the reason they have had their sustained success. They dont have superior athletes to half the teams they play most of the time

Luray doesn't have the speed to stop East Rock and they won't be able to match them point for point. Injuries happen, but if they stay healthy, East Rock should win the district.

Maybe they are, maybe they are not. I just know that Luray appeared to be much more physical than was East Rock when both played Madison. Not a knock against Riverheads, I am sure they are solid as usual.

I dont like Riverheads, so knock away.

I'll put it this way, it has been a long time since I seen a Casto team and line dominated the way they were Thursday

Yep, 21-0 to Central I think. Time before that was Bath. Someone asked me at the game, so the ole SD boy had to inform them lol of course I used a website, not memory, but dont tell them :)
