Richie Brown

You've got to give credit to this guy. In a time where there is so much stupid drama surrounding recruitment, Richie has been nothing but deliberate and fair to every school that has gone after him. He took his time, never made an emotional commitment, and handled everything like pro. It's really a breathe of fresh air after some of the slick **** that has happened recently with Camgate, CJ, etc. If there ever was a prospect who could write a book about the correct way to handle college recruitment, it would be Richie Brown. I'm glad we're going to have someone as smart and level headed as him playing for State, and I know he'll represent us well.

It looks like he'll be a bulldog. According to Richie's father, it's essentially down to us and USM. My friend says that he's leaning "75 percent toward State, 25 percent toward USM." Oh and -3 percent toward Ole Miss. Take it for what it's worth. Admittedly, not much. But I agree with the original poster, this kid has handled the process beautifully.

so questions on Richie, if we get him, he has said that he didn't think he could stand putting on a red-shirt and sitting out a year. If he is a bulldog, do you let him jump in there right off the bat if you aredanny boy mullen? or does he end up getting the red-shirt gently?

...he'll be required to earn his playing time, just like everybody else. I also assume he's been told that by Mullen.

If Richie is ready, he'll play. If not, he'll get the RS and hopefully he can understand that.

if he can make the two deep at the end of summer camp then he probably won't redshirt?obviously, we're spitballing here.

I don't know how mullen goes about deciding on freshmen...to redshirt or not....I always kind of assumed the way he and strick talk it is an automatic thing as a true freshman. Flip side of that is I doubt you red-shirt big Quay.

My idea of buidling a powerhouse would be everyone redshirts unless there are unusual, unusual circumstances.

I wouldn't be surprised if he plays some special teams next year, but I doubt he gets any meaningful minutes at LB unless someone goes down. I'd like to redshirt him, but if he can help out, let him play... Oh, and I don't see any way they're going to keep Quay off the field, especially after getting him in early.

And like most on this thread have said, the potential for early playing time at USM is the only reason he isn't 100% committed to us. Apparently USM had a linebacker who was just denied a 6th year of eligibility, and Richie is weighing his decision based on that. Like I said, he's still likely a Bulldog. Don't shoot the messenger.

The guy has good speed and good athleticism. Don't forget he played some tailback and did well. Due to that, he is a good fit on pretty much every special team unit. He should be able to cover punts and kicks very well, and also block on punt and kick returns. That allows him to contribute enough to forgo the redshirt. Also, we lost Maye and Wilson at linebacker and Cam Lawrence will be a senior. I think Richie will get a few 2nd and 3rd team reps in order to be ready for significant linebacker play as a sophomore.

Bottom line is that a player has to be capable of playing a fair number of snaps in order to make the loss of a redshirt worth it. Richie can get a lot of snaps by playing special teams.

Edited to say that my mention of tailback in the first paragraph doesn't mean I think he will play tailback at MSU. He is obviously a linebacker only in college. That was mentioned to illustrate the type of athlete he is. He has the size, strength, speed, and ability (both blocking and tackling) to play on all special teams units.

RB is indeed a fine young man with great parents that have kept him grounded. They have counseled him, but his choice of where to go has been all his. He has been wrapped in maroon and white for longer than most think.

My understanding is that Mullen generally leaves it up to a player if they want to redshirt or not. He lays it all in front of them and tells them how much PT they will get (if any) and the choice is theirs. A la Michael Carr and Dee Arrington. Both played sparingly as freshmen, but they chose that over a 5th year. If a kid has no chance at playing, he may not get the choice, and if he did I guess it wouldn't matter.<div>
</div><div>One things rebels accuse Mullen of (on the spirit at least) is being a liar to these kids. that is exactly opposite of what he does. He is honest and upfront, and that may have hurt him some in recruiting. Some players don't want to hear that they will be working for that starting (or even backup) spot, and that they may have to redshirt. They want their ego fed. They want to be guaranteed a starting spot as a true freshman. Mullen doesn't do that.</div>

it's pretty easy to do a methodical job in selecting what is best for you. You also don't go around acting like the primadonna. And yes, having a father around probably helped a lot.

he has publicly stated that he really doesn't want to redshirt and doesn't think he could take sitting out a year. Seems like a good young man and I saw him play in the MS-AL All-Star game and was impressed. He can flat out play, I don't care how many stars he has. I think we'll wind up signing him and he'll be a good one for us. Like you say, special teams and a few snaps at LB next year, then probably in the rotation as a true SO.
