Both Calpreps and the USA Today predictors favor Richlands by one on a neutral field. At Appomattox, the USA Today predicts Appomattox to win by a score of 28-26. Calpreps predictions for this weekend hadn't been released when I checked an hour ago.....

Appo averages 37.3 ppg on offense and 7.41 ppg on defense.
Something has to, and will, give. Let's just hope offense prevails in this one haha.

Haha. I know coaches hate high scoring games but it sure is fun to watch as a fan.
We certainly like it down here. Buckingham held us to our lowest point total of the year at 35 this week. I expect Appomattox to be just as tough, if not a more tough challenge. We aren't taking this lightly.
I'm sure you guys aren't! There's a reason Richlands is consistently one of the best teams in the state, but you already know that. I'm looking forward to watching this game. I haven't watched Richlands since they beat Brookville at Brookville in the state semis a few years back. What year was that? 2006? 2007?
Curious why game is Sat. but its a long haul for Richlands...likely they travel and spend Fri. night in Lynchburg then journey over to Appo. Similar to last year's state semi visit to the Staunton area. Unfortunately, like last year, now there is rain chances Sat. after 65 degree, sunny weather for Fri.
Maybe the forecast will be wrong and it stays dry to allow everyone an enjoyable experience
If memory serves me, the visitor side at Appo is not very large (500 or so) so first come first seated. Fairly large parking lot for tailgaters right next to field.

Our town has been alerted to the low seating and now people are trying to beat each other up there. My guess is there will be several hundred Richlands fans at the gate 4 hours before kickoff. We took about 1500-2000 to Wilson Memorial last year, and I would venture to say we will bring about that many to Appomattox on Saturday. Should be a real fun atmosphere.
Classic Defense vs. Offense in both games which is exciting. Richlands/Union both bring the offense no question. Glenvar/Appo both bring the defense no question. both are around 6-7 points a game average High scoring games favor offense..low scoring games favor defense. It's going to be interesting to which teams prevail. I'll go against the majority of you on here who love the offensive stats (and picking Richlands/Union) and predict Appo over Richlands 21-20 and Glenvar over Union 20-14 OT. Good luck to all teams.
Yep, that's the one. You guys had a great team that year. I remember the RB #44 (Devin Johnson, I think?) and your QB was really good too. Also, didn't you guys have a really good receiver that year? Maybe #2?
That's it! Devon went on to Marshall and is a senior this year. Had a monster ear last year and got hurt early this year.

Like I have said before, Appomattox starting D has only gave up 4 TDs all year, reserves were in on other TDs throughout the season. Our coach is very conservative with our players Reserves play after we get up a few TDs. So that 37.3 is deceiving. But hey, if it helps you compare your O and D vs. ours, cool....do you my dude.

I'm always glad to see former Virginia high school football players do well at the collegiate level, especially FBS! Ironically, his total rushing yards for his junior season ranks second all-time in MU history behind another former Virginia high schooler, Chris Parker of my alma mater, Heritage (Lynchburg).

I wouldn't make the mistake of thinking all we are is a high scoring offense, we are that, no doubt, but we are a physical team too and can play a little D ourselves, maybe not quite up to Appo or Glenvar standards, but pretty good.
No matter what kind of game it turns out to be, it's going to be a heck of a game for sure. When you get 2 teams together that are of this quality, it can't help but be a great game !

Richlands does the same. starters only played 2 full games in the regular season. So they were averaging 48 points in just a little over a half. 2nd string defense allowed some of those tds as well. So I agree you can't go by that. One thing is for sure, both teams starters will be playing 4 quarters Saturday.
I was going to make that point and also point out that while Appomattox did a better job of controlling Buckingham's offense, Richlands did hang 35 on a team that held Appo to 7 points during regulation time.
That one TD was a defensive TD I believe. So the Appo offense didn't score until OT.
We could say the exact same things. Our starting offense has played 30 of a possible 48 quarters this season. That's 4 and a half games worth of sitting on the bench. This offense could have easily put up 60-70 points a game if Mance didn't call off the dogs. We also could have put another TD on BC Friday night if Mance didn't go into clock kill/mercy mode.
As for our starting defense, they've played the same number (30) of quarters this season. If you only take those into account, our starting defense has allowed 11.5 ppg. That's not quite the Appo or Glenvar numbers, but don't think we don't have a good defense. They love to punch an offense in the mouth and see how they respond. Buckingham responded very well in the first half, but as the game wore on our defense prevailed.
This will be a very fun game.
Reading this board all year...Richlands sounds like a very scary team and it's hard to pick against them because of all the rhetoric out there about them..Also looks like Appo played flat against Dan River. It's all going to come down to matchups and which team is the hot team... so then I found it interesting that BCkight, who has seen both teams up close...say he thinks Appo has the horses to stop Richlands. I am conflicted but still leaning Appo.

There were 3 big plays vs buckingham that are controversial OFF THE PLAY calls. In other words. The action penalized would not have effected the play. 2 were 50+ yard TDs ( one run, one pass). Then they took a game changing INT back that wouldve had us in good feild position.

I've been reading these posts about Richlands and Appomattox. Bottom line is this....both are good teams. I've seen them both play and I can tell you it will be a toss up and come down to the all mighty turnovers. Appomattox is favored, the number one seed, and should be. They have a great game. I was very impressed by their defense when I watched them against Buckingham County. They are very fast, very quick, very strong (not terribly big) but very strong and get leverage up front. I think many are underestimating Appo's offense. It is fantastic also. The same applies to Richlands defense. Folks, I watched Richlands defense against Bluefield, WV. It's very, very good. Should be a great game. The talk or hype about Richlands on this board over the year is much deserved. They are a fantastic football team. With that....it may seem like their is more talk or hype of Richlands this year, yet I don't think that's true. Richlands has been very good for a long time, so you know what that means....it means people get interested in football, so there is simply more fans of Richlands on the board than other teams because of that. Let Rustburg or Graham start winning again repeatedly like they did in the 90's and take a look at how many fans come on the board from either school. If Appomattox remains continously good for 5 years, the amount of Appo fans on this board will be alarming. That simply goes for any team.
One other thing, because Richlands has been good for a long time and has another very good football team does not mean they are the favorite. Appomattox in the past has struggled a bit and by in large, not been what is has become today, but...........that does not mean Richlands is the favorite. This is 2015, Appomattox is loaded with talent and experience. After watching both Richlands and Appomattox, I think both are solid. I would favor Richlands personally if the game were at Richlands. I would favor Richlands by 2 touchdowns if in Richlands. If on a neutral field, I would favor Richlands by 7-10 points. At Appomattox, well......I think Appomattox wins by 6 points. Having known a few from Richlands, I can tell the parents I talk to are going into the game feeling like Appo is a high powered talented machine of which Richlands will have to play the perfect game to win. I am sincere on that and I believe Mance and the coaching staff at Richlands feel that way and are preparing their kids in that matter. I don't know why the Appo fan on here keeps "feeling like he's the underdog." That can only be because he is not used to the feeling of being the favorite. Get used to it Appo fans, you are winning and have a solid program and are the one seed for a reason. Time to get past the "underdog" non-sense. It's other teams trying to knock you off, not the other way around.
Only my opinion on having watched both teams. With that written.......Go Glenvar!!!! For the first time, I get to see the legendary stadium of the old Powell Valley Vikings. I always wanted to see this place. Hopefully, we come back with a W.

After seeing both Appomattox and Richlands up close against my team, I slightly give the edge to Appomattox. Their secondary is better suited to challenge Richlands receivers and I think they can move the ball against Richlands defense. Now if Richlands can somehow get something going on the ground which I think they have to they will put a lot of pressure on Appomattox defense. Coaching will decide this game and they both are very well coached. I think Appomattox have more athletes but that Richlands scheme is tough for anyone to stop. You can contain them but I doubt if you stop them all game their QB is great and #11 and#15 will eventually make an impact. Good luck to both can't wait to see it.

We've had games with 300 yards rushing. We've had games with 50 yards rushing. Take what the defense gives you. That's the joy of having a well balanced offense.

That's what I am afraid of, still trying to decide if I want to make the trip. With my back and knees, I cannot go and stand the entire game, and my wife and i have other responsibilities ( our mothers, both elderly ) on Saturday morning and can't leave as early as I think we would need to get there and make sure we have a seat, so I may have to stay home and listen to it. But we haven't made a decision yet.

I was a bit surprised at the speed of BC. I thought they would have had a bit more speed than they did. Our players caught their players from behind several times and in the video you can see Atkinson outrun everyone but one guy.
Hoping the Richland's radio broadcast team will be making the trip to Appo. They are very knowledgeable and upbeat regardless of the score. They represent the community well. I recall listening to them I believe for all three of the Brookville-RIchlands playoff games. Even though I live in Lynchburg, I still occasionally tune in to listen to their Friday night broadcast.
I wish I hadn't listened to the second game (2008)....definitely my least favorite of the three matchups.
No they are terrible, no walk way to the top and they are very low. The highest seat you can barely see over the football players head.
