When asked if he's ever had a "good loss" in his career. (I'm paraphrasing)

"In 1996 we were undefeated and really in position to make a run at a National Championship, but I felt like our team needed to get refocused. I benched Antwon Walker in the 2nd half of the SEC Championship game, not because he did anything wrong, just because.. We lost to Mississippi State, and I felt like our team was much more focused and we went on to win a national championship."

Hmm.. Long story short RP just said he threw that game away. I'll take it Rick, but I had never heard that before.

in 21 minutes of play. He must have played some in the second half.

Maybe being 4 of 13 with his team down by 15 had something to do with him being pulled.

Amazing the team was coached to pursue rebounds as opposed to hauling *** to the other end of the court.

It's amazing how many fast break layups we had that game... Dick was a pretty damn good coach........

He has two more Sweet 16 appearances than Stands and one more SEC coach of the year. If Dick would have stayed away from the college girls Stands never would have gotten the job at State...

I dunno Randy that looked an awfully lot like how Stans teams plays. Lots of 3's and poor shots, Dontae Jones was just a beast. Noticed alot of home run passes we do fairly often now that we usually results in a turn over. I don't see much difference. We were even up by alot and allowed UK to get back in the game.

Pitino said in the immediate post-game that he didn't mind the loss because his team needed a reminder that they weren't invincible. He never said (at the time) that he benched Walker "just because."

you can tell he wanted the win, so what I think I'm really hearing is a pompous shmuck spouting some garbage that will allow his colossal ego to explain away a loss to Mississippi State. Whatever helps you sleep at night, Ricky....

I looked for #24 in the 2nd half of that video, and Walker wasonly shown for a couple of possessionsin the 2nd half - around the4:26 mark of the video with MSU up 57-42.

I seriously doubt he would take Walker out if he thoughthe would help himwin that game. You got beat, Rick. And we were a Final Four team. Get over it.

Because they were not. They lost in November to UMass. I believe they were 32-1 when we beat them in NOLA.

And listening to Pitino talk about anything is a waste of time. He is a piece of human garbage just like Calipari. Only dickwads like Ol Blue worship him anymore.

Even the big blue kool-aid drinkin'est of the UKfaithful who remember the gamewill admit they just got their doors blown off by a team that wanted it more and was not just looking forward to the next round. Just mention Dontae Jones and Darryl Wilson to them. They turn pale and their pupils get all small. Or maybe it's just the oxycontin kicking in.

Remember how Wake Forest anhilated us to start the next season. What a horrible experience that season was.

As far as Pitino's comment, he has a big Walker vs. Dampier chip on his shoulder. At the time he stated that Walker would be a better NBA pllayer than Damp, or that he'd "rather have" Walker on an NBA team. Actually, both turned out pretty good. However, my point here is that Pitino didn't like the way Walker matched up with Damp. Also, I think we beat KY in much the same fashion during the regular season that year. NOt sure because the SEC championship stands out as one of our great games ever and kndof overshadows the regular season. I do remember that we lost to Ole Miss in early February and fell completely out of the rankings for awhile, which seemed absurd because we knew how damn good that team could be. That loss is a probably why we weren't seeded higher, tho everybody knows that conference losses are going to happen as the teams know each other so well. Even though it's still bad and not something we like, basketball fans easily understand our recent losses to conference bottom feeders Auburn and LSU. Seldom do you have a team so dominant that it can't be touched (like Kentucky's team that we almost had twice last season).

Walker was frustrated by getting blocked out and schooled by Dampier in the paint. Then he wasn't playing D either on the perimeter and Jones and Wilson had a 3 point field day. Jones also lit them up and there was nothing they could do. So why not go ahead and take the loss and try to use it as a motivator.<div>
</div><div>Pitino also knows if we had met in the championship game that we had a damn good chance of beating them again for the overall championship.</div>

I had to look it up. I didn't believe it. They scored 86 points in a half against LSU. That's absolutely incredible. I really can't even imagine how that happens.<div>
