He probably is a very good coach and may turn out to be a homerun hire, but this one is a shocker.

amaze me. Let's face it, Scott tried to drink the koolaid with Payne but it just wouldn't go down. Time will tell it that was a mistake. Scott stuck to his principles<div>which may cost him dearly in the end but he picked the guy he was comfortable with and whom he felt would do the best job for MSU. So where does it actually say he got fired from Purdue, because I've also heard Clemson paid him more to come to them. Also, he was at Clemson as an assistant for two years. Are you really gonna blame him for not turning Clemson into a powerhouse in just two years when he wasn't even the head guy? BTW, the two years he was there they signed seven 3* players and a 4*. Considering all the good basketball teams in the surrounding states, I'd say that's pretty good for the first two years. I already know his x's and o's are better than Stans. because the reason we couldn't compete before Stans arrived on staff was because we couldn't recruit enough players to compete on a high level. Will be interesting to see what happens with what players we can attract now that he is gone with a guy that has never worked in the area. I certainly hope that we didn't pass on Payne just because our administration can't stomach the "underbelly" of college basketball recruiting. It just so happens that KY is likely to ride that underbelly to a national title tomorrow night. If we don't want to play the game to win the game what's the point of playing at all. Its sad that college basketball recruiting has gotten where it is but we can't change the fact that it has.
We aren't above the NCAA basketball radar as they are and I think Stricklin wanted to stay away from that possible scenario. Not saying Payne wouldn't have been a great hire and having www on our side would've been a bad thing. It just wasn't the direction our AD wanted to go. And you know what, he gets paid to take care of our beloved university and I'm glad he hired the man he felt best to lead our basketball team.
