with Sidney, a Sr. PG, Hood, Moultrie, Steele, Brian Bryant, and a shitload of players... win a game in the SECT against a beatable opponent... all with 6 scholarship players, no seniors, and 2 walkons.

5 star post.

We play hard and have some decent players to build around. I'm really looking forward to some solid basketball next year. Great performance by Rick Ray and Co. Tonight.

I never said he didn't. I saw us win tougher SECT games with teams

that couldn't touch last years' in terms of talent... but last year's Georgia loss was just about as inexcusable as the '08 loss against Georgia. Stans had as many head-scratching tourney losses as he did tourney wins.

But your posts makes no sense. Stansbury won the SEC tounament twice in 2002 & 2008 and should have won in 2010 if the ref would have called a lane violation against Wall. To say Ray just did what Stans never did is not a very good comparison

I'm just not sure why any time Ray does something positive, it has to be turned in to a shot at Stans. Stans beat many more talented teams than ours in SEC tournament games. Hell, we had no business beating that Tennessee team to win the tournament in 2009, but we did.

Fabulous post! Would read aGAIN!

Hey dubmass. you're comparing apples to oranges.

with 18-21 y/o, it's not always about talent.

it's the buy in/not buy in .....theory. There are no cancers on this team.

If Ray coaches MSU for 14 years, he'll have losses like that as well. Keep this in mind, from the time they reinstated the SEC tourney in 1979 until 1998, the year before Stansbury started, we won 7 games in 20 years in the tournament. From 1999 until 2012, we won 16 games in 14 years.

So what were the four 40 pt losses at home that Ray had this year? Didn't count as head scratchers?

Congrats to him and the team for closing out the season on a high note, but good lord... If winning one rivalry game and beating two of the worst power conference teams in the country is verification for you guys that Ray is going to obliterate Stansbury's accomplishments, you're searching way too hard

Do we have to cover this again? We had 134 chances to put that game away without depending on the refs to make a call that gets made about twice a year. Should have won? Yes. Because we got that call? No.

If I remember correctly...

We either missed the front end of a 1-1, or both free throws literally right before that possession. Jarvis also missed a couple of gimmee's earlier in the game. Any of those fall, we would have won.

They had a stat during the game saying we are something like 45-73 all time in the SECT. Stans had a lot to do with that.

If I must....here's what happened....ripped from SPS 2010....so not directed at you.

Let me remind you that first, we should not have gone into the SECT on the bubble. If we were a true tournament team, we had five months to prove it. We didn’t. Just like this year, we didn't beat teams we should have beaten. One non-whistle in the last four seconds in Nashville didn’t wipe out five months of inconsistent, underachieving basketball. The fact that winning the tournament was our only chance to make the NCAAs speaks volumes about our season.

The refs didn’t "cost us the game" against Kentucky. One call made in a vacuum rarely has that much impact on a game. Did they blow the call? Yes. Did it suck as a State fan? Of course. But it was also just as much our fault that it got to that point.

Here's what led up to that non-call. No rational person (which I understand excludes you when talking about basketball) can say that call cost us the game.

1:41 to go, up five.

1:28 Dodson misses but Patterson gets the rebound and scores. Up three. With the ball.

OPPORTUNITY #1: GET THE REBOUND, GET FOULED, MAKE FREE THROWS AND YOU WIN THE GAME.

1:06 Cousins fouls Jarvis. Our senior All SEC center steps to the line. Misses the first. Misses the second.

OPPORTUNITY #2: MAKE THE FREE THROWS AND YOU GO UP FIVE AND PROBABLY WIN THE GAME.

0:51 Cousins misses a jumper and Bost gets the rebound. Bledsoe fouls him with 43 seconds left but that’s the sixth team foul, so we are not shooting. Stewart, another senior, and Benock turn it over on the inbounds, Wall scores, and now we are only up 1 with 40 seconds left.

OPPORTUNITY #3: DON’T TURN IT OVER, GET FOULED, HIT FREE THROWS AND YOU WIN THE GAME.

0:27 Bledsoe fouls Dee. He misses the front end of the one and one.

OPPORTUNITY #4: MAKE THE FREE THROWS AND YOU WIN THE GAME.

0:12 Wall misses. Stewart get the rebound, is fouled, and hits both free throws. So now we’re up three again.

0:07 Kentucky calls timeout. We also have the chance to talk to our team, not that you can tell it.

0:04 Bledsoe gets away with a walk on the inbounds, then gets fouled too early, goes to the line, makes one, misses one, Wall misses a three, but Cousins rebounds and puts it in to tie it.

OPPORTUNITY #5: DON’T FOUL SO QUICKLY, REDUCING THE CHANCE FOR A PUTBACK.
OPPORTUNITY #6: GET THE EFFING REBOUND AND YOU WIN THE GAME.

So if you want to blame the ref for missing the FT call, fine. They certainly blew it. The walk on Bledsoe was MUCH more blatant. But the bottom line is we had six opportunities to win the game in the last 100 seconds, and didn’t get it done. I give us full credit for playing a great 38 minutes, but the last two minutes cost us that game, not the last four seconds.

One can clearly

see that the ending of that game can be contributed to our players choking. Thataway to step up, guys. Timmy Bowers laughs at this.

Not sure if you are with me but: Where in the last 100 seconds of any close game in 10 years was Stans able to GAIN AN EDGE? Gain an edge meaning, all of those years of experience, near wins.....where was there EVER an all in effort by our squad to win a game? Once by Timmy Bowers at BAMA... And how many times do I have to keep repeating!? Recruiting athleticism and expecting them to win, without a coach, IS NOT the formula of success. It takes both. Thats why college BB is the closest thing we have to an equal playing field in college sports. Perfect example: The most successful, winning-est program, of all time, is having trouble making the Tourny. Not that losing the #1 NBA pick should make a difference, but the way UK can recruit, its not a problem. What Im saying, in order to reach the sweet 16-elite 8 status, we had to make a change. Our athleticism couldn't mask the fact that we were inept at the head coach position and as a whole.

So Ray's winning percentage is better?

That's all I needed to see.

Interesting enough, if he wins today, Ray will guarantee himself a better SEC tourney winning percentage until the yr 2015

AND, unless Ray wins the SECT, he will 'tie' the MSU record for 'greatest number of losses in a single season' at 22.

Winning % in SECT

Ray - 100% (1-0)
Stans - 57% (16-12)
Williams - 27% (4-15)

The sensitivity in this thread is hilarious.

If you can't pick up on the larger point, I guess I can't help you.
