If they did stats like they do now, D.D. Lewis would have the most tackles of any linebacker that ever played college football.

In those years, he seemed to be the only one on the team who could make a tackle.

As a huge fan of the Tom Landry/Roger Staubach version of the Cowboys in the 70's, I was a huge D.D. Lewis fan because he was my link from MSU to the Cowboys.

I met him and got his autograph at the 98 SEC Championship Game, and told him how happy I was the day he got the Super Bowl ring he was wearing.

He lived at Wood Manor one off season when we lived there . Got to know him a little bit. Nice guy and sometimes played volley ball with us on Sunday morning . He had fairly long hair back then and I remember one Sunday morning one guy didn't know him and asked if he was in the band that had played at the Kappa Sig house the night before....we all cracked up. Good times ! A true MSU legend. R.I.P. DD.

If I'm not mistaken, I think DD was if not the only one, but one of the few that made first team AA while playing for a team that didn't win a game.

79. Didn’t think he was quite that old for some reason. May he R.I.P.

One of the greatest to ever wear a Mississippi State uniform.

Absolutely.

If we had a football player Mt Rushmore, he'd be on it.

From Wikipedia...

"Repeatedly referred to as the top linebacker in the Southeastern Conference, Lewis made a distinct impression on rival coaches. Hall of Fame coach Bear Bryant called D.D. Lewis "the best linebacker in the country". Bill Yeoman applauded Lewis' ability to recover and pursue and said he was the finest linebacker he had seen that year. Following the 1967 season, Vince Dooley said he was the best linebacker Georgia had faced – "He's terrific.""
